...that said, I think if I was going to do an insert in an aluminum door I'd mill out a rectangular recess from behind that's maybe 1/2-2/3rds of the way through and large enough to fully encompass the emblem, then cut the emblem shape out in the door within the rectangle and use a rectangular wood insert from behind. I'd probably leave the wood slightly thicker than necessary then sand it fully flush after it's bonded together...

Even better...and that would make dremeling all that much easier with less mat. to cut through :toast:

I hate to say it but I think it's dead sexy as-is, the second set of wings may be a bit too much and take away from how classy it looks now.

to really go all out you could insert the wood and trace the emblem onto the wood, then carve around the emblem on the wood so the emblems raised from the block and when inserted comes up to flush or even protrudes slightly depending on the look I wanted.

alternatively I think I'd go with quigs way of engraving out just a recessed step and then inserting the wood from the front and sanding it as flat aas you need it to be. I think if you just cut it out and edge mount it it's going to be weak and if you press on it it'll be more likely to pop out, or pop in really I guess:)

I love seeing stuff like this and I'm sure whatever you decide it'll look great but really it's awesome just as it is

Hmmmm interesting turbo, I admit I didn't think of that, sounds like a great idea to have additional glue area. I'll certainly give that a try. Now as far as your belief that a second set of wings may be just too much, I hear ya. I too was thinking about that but what I can do is cut out a set of wooden wings and attach them with some double sided tape on the door and see how it looks. You may well be right because there's always a fine line between something elegant and something bordering on kitsch

I would agree that a second set of wings might be overkill, but what about something else that is aviation related? Maybe a propeller, helmet, radar screen, wind sock, or something else... Maybe even the company logo of who you fly for...

You know what the more I think of this (and read your great comments) I tend to lean towards what turbo said. It's an elegant mod as is, I suspect anymore dress up and it will border on kitsch. Perhaps it's time to move on to something else.

I have another wood BFer (not Reo based/inspired) in the works currently but I also have this brand spanking new Reo Grand (non LP) black wrinkle which is gathering dust. Got it some time ago from Rob and it's a perfect contender for a next Reo modification project. Trouble is that if I'm going to mod it I have to top that VV Grand otherwise it's not much of a challenge. I need to think about that some and see what I can come up with

Always been a fan of black and silver. You could always inlay your monogram in sterling silver. ..
