Good find, Jagster! I read the article, and found it encouraging. Found the study the article referred to, on the Lancet journal website, which is here:

http://www.thelancet.com/

It's the first article on the homepage, and clicking on it will link to the study, in PDF format.

Looks like I'll be doing some reading tonight. Thanks!

The study was released on monday here and we've had a couple of days of fairly positive media items about it.

They do keep interviewing the CEO of our Quitline who has decided that a hand to mouth habit is bad and vaping encourages that to continue.

She should by now be starting to read the emails politely telling her to mind her own buisness and concentrate on peddling NRT's.

They must have been using some really bottom of the barrel model PV's if they were only EQUAL with NRT's in getting people to stop smoking. We know NRT's only have a 5% success rate. Vaping with a good quality PV would have to be at least in the 40% success category.

Well they were 2% better than the NRT's whatever they were.

The cigalikes down here are rebranded versions of the ones you get in the states, not sure which they used.

The main local vendor commented on the Kiwi forum that from his sales data and client contact that he estimated the quit rate would be more like you say wv2win,probably much higher.

Time for one of these trials using better gear methinks.

I would luv a link so I can ask here if she wants her food via IV or 'up da ....'!

Iffy, I am qualified to insert a tube into any oriface you want to.....we can feed her any way EXCEPT hand to mouth if you wish.

This is probably gonna cause a whole slew of gutter minds now. ;)

In the study, participants were given 13 weeks worth of supplies, then were interviewed six months later to get the results.

Two things I noted. One, what do they mean by 'commercially-available' e-cigs? As we all know, not all e-cigs are created equal. Were they give some disposable kind with only one flavor? Heck, I wouldn't have quit with them either.

The other thing (not mentioned in the article) is that nicotine-containing juice is illegal to buy in New Zealand. So the study subjects - after they finished their 13-week supply - wouldn't have been able to get more unless they ordered it from overseas. Not that that's impossible but it would make it harder if someone wanted to just continue vaping ejuice with nicotine in it.

wv2win, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the percentages compared to the NRT's. They had to be using those ones you buy in the quik marts with those results. It would be great if they supplied what kind of E-cigs they provided the test group.

Thanks for posting this, jagster. I will have to send this to my brother as I gave his son e-cg kit to quit smoking, and my brother thought that is was just as bad as cigs and that he saw no benefit in them. He would rather he quit as he did with the patch.

No Problem and glad I can spark a discussion of any kind . I am a true convert now and will do anything to spread the word.

New Zealand vapers can get pre filled cartridges with nic in a day or two, most DIY from scratch or use doublers.

Some from that test group have already moved on to ego types.

Tobacco researcher Murray Laugesen says the Government is standing in the way of smokers' human rights by making it difficult for them to obtain a product that could help save their lives. "They're entitled to obtain them as a lifestyle product without going to the doctor. You wouldn't have to go to the doctor to buy diet Coke," he says. "The whole thing is a tragic farce for smokers."
