There are currently no rules against people posting reviews about products with which they have some sort of affiliation or financial interest. I checked with SJ and he confirms this - there are only rules for the suppliers themselves. So here is a thread to discuss proposals for some rules.

My personal feelings are that anybody posting a review should also post if they got the item free to review and whether they have any business dealings, affiliation or commission arrangements with a supplier or manufacturer.

Just to be clear on how objective and independent a review probably is. I wouldnt want to see review volumes fall, just clarity.
Then readers / viewers can make their own minds up about the value of the review.

I agree , and Have done for some time .

Igetcha and terraphon have taken steps to provide the information that any product was recieved free of charge for review, certainly a step in the right direction.

The coupon code and how that all works is another subject that people using the code need to know about, and how that may or may not affect the review.

It's too late an hour for me to be thinking top notch but i think that we need two review boards. One for those with affiliation to suppliers i.e. those that offer discount codes and recieve the items for free for review purposes et al,
and one that is for your average joe the consumer who has purchased the product for their own use.

a sticky on how the coupon code scheme works would also be an idea.

codes are tracked back to the individual reviewers so that suppliers can keep track of where the referrals are coming from. this then helps reviewers get more products to review.

so the more codes a reviewer gets , the more free stuff they get to review.

IMO ,
Bad review = less ppl buy, less codes used therefore less free items to review
Good Review = more ppl buy , more codes used , more free items to review

if i recieve an item for free for the purpose of a review then i make that clear at the beginning of the review:-

example

YouTube - REVIEW OF THE ECOPURE "FRESH" E-LIQUID FROM INTELLICIG.COM

if i recieve an item for free and i have a discount code attatched to it then i have a "please read" notice at the start of the review to state that i benefit from the use of any discount as well as the viewer benefitting, plus text to state i recieved it for free PLUS a verbal statement to state i recieved it for free:-

example

YouTube - REVIEW OF THE PILOT ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE

if its an item that i purchased but have a discount code for then it recieves the same "please read" warning but no verbal warning.

if its a item i purchased and have no discount code then i say bugger all!

i dont think that i could be any more clearer than that.

kate, thank you for making me aware,

cheers,

scott

Very good points Andy.
I believe ApO, Igetcha and others as Kate mentioned had brought up and addressed similar points in another thread. These are indeed issues that should be addressed by all involved and built upon.

I believe that upfront transparency and honesty is key. I have tried to come from such approach from the beginning of my reviews.

In my reviews previously and my reviews to come, it is always stated whether the product was provided: free for the purposes of review, discounted for the purposes of review, or if it was regularly purchased.

I have not previously, nor do I currently have any commission arrangements, or business proceedings/affiliations with any company. Aside from normal purchases, and occasional bulk order (NOT for profits) Or if the product was provided for the review as stated.

My reviews remain independent in their entirety, Again taking only into consideration, the product received/supplied. This does not influence bias in any way, shape or form. I present and review what is received. Whether it is purchased or provided, it receives equal presentation.

This applies for previous reviews, and the products I am currently in the process of reviewing. I have not benefited monetarily or otherwise in any case, except of the actual product(s) being reviewed. That is, If it was indeed provided free for the review

If this becomes subject to change for any such reason or circumstance, I will be expressly clear of my intentions, and my actions.

I realize I am not nearly as reknown a reviewer as some, but I still adhere to these standards, and will continue to do so.

Please any comments, suggestions, questions, or otherwise are always welcome and appreciated :)

I wonder if it would help to have the custom title 'Reviewer' (or something descriptive) in the same way suppliers are identified under their user names.

If there was to be a separate board or a way to distinguish reviewers who have links to traders or financial interests then there would need to be a forum definition of what a 'reviewer' is.

Thanks to Scott, Tyler, Terraphon and all reviewers who make it clear what their interests are.

apostle, (i noticed you edited your post)

discount codes give a comission that is tracked to each reviewer. i will use any funds raised from the use of a discount code to purchase more e-cigs. suppliers will send out the freebies regardless of whether the code is used. i previously stated that without using the word comission because (as quoting from Leafords blog) i also felt that there was no reason for me to put my accounts on show.

the vast majority of people tend to care more about if they save money rather going on a witch hunt to persecute a reviewer over a couple of poxy percent. and in fact, on EVERY OTHER forum i am a member of i regularly get people telling me that i SHOULD be making some revenue for all the time and effort i put into this. besides, the codes are hardly used anyway.

i can only speak for myself, but i spend **** knows how many hours answering question after question each and every hour of every day to help and advise people. i estimate that 60% of my day is spent with my hands on a bleeding keyboard when it should be with a hawk and trowel. the days when i am plastering im constantly worried about getting home to an inbox of 100 plus emails that i have to answer whilst trying to give the kids a bath and put to bed and so i can hopefully grab 3 hours sleep before i have to wake up to go to work again. doing the reviews and answering questions ALL the time is now causing problems with my wife who quite rightly says that i should be spending that time looking for more plastering work. i have 2 and 4 year old daughters who i hardly have time for because "daddy is always on his computer". you got any idea how much it breaks my heart when i hear them say that?
and what do i get in return? a few poxy quid and seeds of doubt that are planted to question my integrity.

apostle, you keep saying your statement about "bad reviews = less freebies, good reviews = more freebies" despite our private messages and me bending over backwards to try and please YOU by changing my review format and adding disclaimers and warnings.
im sure you will say that you are not directing that statement at me personally, but as im one of the reviewers you are directing it at i do take it personally.

you are convinced that people only watch one single review and make up their minds straight away to go and make an impulse purchase based on what the reviewer said. you are obviously an intelligent guy so why the **** do you assume that everyone on this forum who watches a review is a naive idiot?

if im going to purchase something then i watch or read as many reviews as i can before making up my own mind. im convinced that the vast majority of people on here do the exact same thing.

you seem to think that all i do is sit in front of a camera for 10 minutes whilst gloating over the free e-cig i got before sitting back and watching the cash come rolling in from the poor unsuspecting mugs that i have just brainwashed in to making a purchase. yeah right! and i suppose i then retire to my private yacht for the evening whilst sipping champagne and sitting in a bath full of diamonds.

i also posted this thread a while ago:-

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/video-reviews/10148-discount-codes-review-issues-igetcha.html

this was my opening post and i have highlighted certain key areas in bold and updates in red:-

hi all,

ive been musing over a few things that have been bothering me from comments i noticed on the ECF forum from a very small collection of forum users. some have been directed at myself, some have been directed at other reviewers.

basically, some guys have been saying that it is unethical for me to review products that i recieved free of charge and that by using discount codes i must have a vested interest in the company.

to those people I would like to say this:-

whenever i do a review of any e-cig i always say "i recieved" this from a supplier if it was a freebie and if its one i purchased i say "i purchased" this from a supplier. i personally think that by saying that im not pulling the wool over peoples eyes at all but for some its not good enough.
99.9% of people who contact me have all said "thanks for the code" as it saved them money but there are a few people here saying that im giving out good reviews so i benefit from it as well. they also have a problem that i dont mention i benefit from viewers using the code.

i fully understand what they say about giving a product a blinding review will no doubt help sales and therefore will benefit myself more. but, how many people actually make a purchase on my sole review alone? im sure that there may be some who do but i would imagine that the majority of people watch other reviews on the same product, read forum posts etc before making a decision to purchase. i would!
but, it will still not make a scrap of difference to me........my reviews will always be honest. full stop!

i think the best examples of this would be my reviews on the products from e-cigs.co.uk
i have done 3 reviews for them that use codes. 2 were freebies for review and 1 was a purchase. i scored them as follows:-

dse801 with usb pass thru, freebie, 8 out of 10
disposable cigar, freebie, 6.5 out of 10
golden shimmer cigar, purchased, 6 out of 10

the 801 is great and fully deserved the score of 8
the disposable cigar was okay, but let down by vapour production and appearance, hence 6.5
the golden shimmer i absolutely love and use it every evening but it does not produce great vapour and has fairly poor battery life, hence 6.

now, be honest. are they really scores that will set simons tills ringing? the 801 maybe, but surely not the other 2!

I would hate for people to question the honesty of my reviews so therefore i have put the following measures in place:-

1. the start of my reviews will now have a written message to state that i received the e-cig free of charge for the purpose of giving it a review.
2. the written message will also state that as well as the viewer benefiting from the code, that i will benefit from it as well as it gives me the opportunity to be able to get more e-cigs to do more reviews
3. the written message will also ask the viewer to make an informed decision as to whether they wish to continue to watch the review or take advantage of the discount code based on the information provided.
4. the written message will also state that my opinion of the e-cig will always remain true, honest and accurate in every way, shape or form.
5. my opening spoken message will be to inform the viewer that it was recieved free of charge for the purpose of a review.
6. i will no longer use any type of scoring system as i feel that a high or low score could influence a viewer either way. instead i will show the viewer the product in as much detail as possible, with as much information as possible. i will show "whats in the box", how to assemble it, point out what i think are the positives plus what i think are the negatives of the product. i will state what my personal views are on it but then state to the viewer to make their own decision based on what they have seen in the video review. (so basically, everything that i have always done minus a "score out of 10" at the end!)

(a few guys on another forum were ...... off that i was no longer going to include the scores so they started a vote as to whether i keep them or not........there were NO votes against keeping them. therefore i include scores again)

i honestly dont feel that i should have to do any of this to "prove my honesty" as i know all my reviews have been conducted in a true and honest manner.
but i appreciate that for some people it could be deemed as biased. so hopefully these measures will help to prove my honesty to them....... at least in a small way.

On another note, I have openly stated in forum posts that I tend to avoid doing reviews on products that I think are poor and I would like to explain my reasons for this.
the sole reason i avoid recording reviews on poor products is simply because of time. the actual recording of a review takes me about 10 - 30 minutes depending on whether i can get it done in one take without cocking it up or getting tongue tied. i then spend around 6 - 8 hours encoding, editing, adding effects, adding titles, improving sound and picture quality, uploading to youtube etc. so in total, an average of say 7 hours from recording to the uploaded finished article.
now 7 hours does not sound like such a big deal i hear you say.......and you are right, its not. HOWEVER, the real time consuming acts are answering the hundreds of emails, private messages, youtube comments, youtube messages and forum posts that i recieve every week for every review that i publish.
now i admit, i could just simply ignore them but if someone asks me a polite question then i will bend over backwards to help them.
my reviews at 1st were getting 50 - 100 views a day in total. now though, over the course of 2 months they have received over 70,000 views (now at over 105,000) and get an average of 1700 (now 2500) views a day and rising. the more views they get, the more questions i get. so can you imagine what it will be like in another 2 months time!
i either work during the day or look after my children and then come home to a wife and kids who want my attention. once the kids are in bed i then spend an averge of 4 - 7 hours EVERY evening answering everyone who has written to me.
i have in fact done some bad reviews. they were so bad that i honestly dont think that they would possible influence anyone to want to make a purchase or ask a question about them..........wrong! they still do! its quite unbelievable at just how many questions i recieve on the gamucci micro which i absolutely slated!
now, i would much rather spend my time answering questions and helping people with regards to products that i enjoy using myself. i really, really dont want to have to spend even more hours answering question after question on a product i think is sh1te!
maybe that is wrong of me, and i fully understand why people would question it but that is my genuine and only reason for avoiding reviews on products i think are poor.

Im going to ask Dusty (Ratindahat) and Leaford to comment on this thread and give their opinions on using discount codes. Dusty, you have a sticky thread with discount codes and I know that at least some of them are yours for which you benefit if they are used. Leaford your discount codes appear in every post that you make as you advertise them in your forum signature. I only mention you guys because as far as I am aware (I may be wrong) its only myself and you two that actually use discount codes in direct relation to performing video reviews.

I suggest that SJ make a sticky post in the reviews section of the forum to clearly state that discount codes benefit the reviewer as well as the viewer and to compile a list of reviewers who use discount codes. I would even further suggest that maybe SJ create another sub forum solely for video reviews that have discount codes.
This will avoid any more accusations or confusion and will allow forum members to decide what type of reviews they wish to see.

so in summary, do reviewers benefit when a viewer uses a discount code?

yes.

does that mean a reviewer will be biased?

no.

i can only speak for myself when i say that NOTHING would ever make me give a dishonest review. but im 100% confident that the same applies to Dusty and Leaford.

so there you have it.

armed with these facts you now have a choice:-

watch the review, dont watch the review. use the discount code, dont use the discount code.

its entirely up to you!

the response to that thread was fantastic and offered me more support than i could ever imagine.

i really dont know what else i have got to do to convince the doubters of my honesty when conducting a review.

i had to endure 2 months of accusations that i worked for intellicig simply because i gave a good product a good review. now thats died down i have to defend myself again against new accusations of dishonesty.

all i have ever done is try to help people........but now im feeling that i must be the biggest mug on this forum. with the way i feel right now, i wish that tosser from Ruyan had never invented the bloody things.

rant over

There are several major issues here and you are being unfairly abused.
You started doing the reviews as a hobby because you enjoyed ecigs and wanted to offer your opinion. You were successful and you started getting more emails and requests, along with products to review. The reason that you got sent the 'freebies' was because you had built up a reputation and had credibility - a lesson to those seeking to establish associations to represent the industry.
Your integrity is only doubted by those who haven't bothered taking the time to get to know you and their opinion is not worth consideration.
Your hobby became a passion but unfortunately is now threatening to become an obsession and that is something I am familiar with as it was a similar obsession that nearly cost me my marriage at a time when I too had young children.
You really must take a break and sod the world and his dog who wants an answer to their question, you're not the only one out there and these people have to realise that. You have become that bloke who is always there to serve the ecig community when you should be the husband and father that you know you want to be. Set up an auto reply for your emails directing people here to find an answer, or maybe frogbnth would offer to take over answering them?
You owe it to your family to give them your best and believe me you will enjoy spending your time with them even more after the crap you have been getting. You owe us nothing, it is us who are in your debt for providing us with a valuable resource for FREE!!!
I missed a considerable amount of time with my kids and it's time that you can never make up. You've done more than your fair share so take time off and look after those nearest to you. Seriously mate, do it now before it's too late.
All the very best.

It would be great if the reviewer stated he/she got the product for free/paid.

But at the end of the day I personally say who gives a ****. The consumer has plenty of routes on this forum to learn what is and isn't great. The videos are just a bonus.

I think some members spend wayyy to much time on the forum and forget to step back, take a breath and shut the heck up. Seriously go outside for a bit, the graphics are good. Stop trying to save the world one video at a time. Igetcha's are great give em' a break.

In fact I'm going to give the birdie in the next video to all the jack ...'s who love to complain

i have also done reviews and state that the item was given for example check my youtube channel twitedmemo newsmoke reviews if i dont say it it is stated in credits

but i agree if thier is some form of free item or if they are about to sell them then maybe the review should be like and ad and not a review i try to stay unbiased but at least people know that it was free or paid for. BTW all jucie reviews i have done have not been free so if i like a juice i like the juice

Me personally, the review I did for my penstyle was one for which I purchased from E-Smokeytreats.com.. Phil (Owner) was impressed and put it on his page. Now whether I get anything for free is another story, but I'd never done a review before and wanted to try it out. :p I'm not sure what else to add to that.

Thanks to Kate for letting me know about this thread.

Yes, I'm one of the more prolific reviewers on this forum. I, like Scott (igetcha) sometimes receive free product (more lately than before) for reviews...Here's how I've been handling that :

I state clearly at the beginning of the video that the product was sent to me at no cost for the purpose of being reviewed.

I think that's all that needs to be done in such a case.

I do not (have not and likely will not) receive any monetary compensation, of any type or kind, for any of the reviews I have done. I also do not receive any compensation for discount codes that I have...I have them strictly as a "hook a brother up" type of situation...I'll give the codes out to friends or people in the community if they want something and I know the seller is good. I don't ask for anything in return. Never have, never will.

Would I refuse if a seller offered me some free juice or gear because I'd sent a bunch of business their way? Nope...with the understanding (I've publicly stated this before and I'm happy to do it again) that if a seller were to ever ask me to do them a solid in exchange for free / cheap stuff I would not only refuse but I'd dime them out to the community in a heartbeat.

My integrity is worth heaps more than a free bottle of juice or a 901 (make it 2 free bottles of juice (30-50ml/36mg) and a couple of kits and maybe I'll consider it  ... god, here come the PM's, accusing me of being shifty...)

Here's how I see MY part.

A supplier contacts me to do a review because they think they have a good product and believe that good reviews will push business their way. They want me to review their stuff and I usually agree (not always). Now, here's the rub...Nothing in this world is free and getting an independent review is a gamble when you supply the product at no charge. If a supplier sends me free juice they're doing so in hopes that I'll like the product and give them a good score, thus increasing their revenues. If I DON'T like the product, though, I'm going to give it a bad score and they're going to lose out on business...Either way, though, they still sent me free product.

Let's call that their "wager". Win or lose, the house gets a cut...In this case that means that I keep the product. If I hate it, I don't use it or I mix it with something else to make it tolerable. If I like it, I vape it to death.

That's part of the cost of doing business. I offer a service in the form of consulting / advertising. I do so in an unbiased fashion. If the product is good, it gets "advertising time" through my reviews. If the product is crap the supplier gets "consulting time" in the same fashion. The juice is my "fee" for "services rendered".

Regardless, if I got it for free, I make it known.

Igetcha,
The logic to me on how the code scheme works says it could possibly affect the review, I'm not saying it certainly does.....

not Once have I questioned anyones honesty or integrity as reviews go.

There has been plenty of instances on the forum of suppliers in members clothing , biging up their product as if they where a user .
Look at the Parked incedent ffs, and the GG.

This is an issue I should stay away from becuase although It's not targeted at you , you take it as it is.

I rarely watch reviews anymore, I know all i need to now by general chat about a product.

But I would add that I have directed alot of members seeking advice to reviews and I specifically look for your or Terra's reviews to send them too.

I agree 100%. While I tend to trust Scott's video reviews (mostly because he and I have talked a bit behind the scenes and I know where he stands) there are a lot of shifty reviewers out there that I KNOW are not only getting kickbacks but being influenced by them as well.

Yeah, this is a big issue...and one that's going to be hard to kill.

Maybe I'm lacksy-daisy about this whole thing but if a reviewer rates something good or bad and over time the rest of the people (aka active members of this community) commenting on the product seem to be on the same page, I naturally assume they're not a shill.

The people who do the most reviews and use the most variety of products are the ones that I seem to feel the most confident in letting influence my decisions BUT I do all my own research. Everyone should check and search out opinions but the reviewers are only human. Something they really like, you might hate. Such is life.

As for freebies and coupon codes, I look at that as a benefit of putting the time and effort in to making the video and following up to the questions. Since I've been here there's really only one example of someone who could be questionable and they certainly haven't been a part of this thread so far.

Terra, Getcha, Cetke, Chris, Leaford, etc -- Keep doing what you've been doing baby!

I found this forum through reviews on YouTube, Leaford to be exact. I found out about VaporGuys from a review he did on their disposables. Then through VaporGuys, I found out about my 306, and so on and so forth. It's been a great experience and everyone (suppliers too) I've dealt with has been excellent and these were based on things people said or reviewed.

Now, it could have gone a lot worse had I not did my own research and just went with the first link when I googled 'electronic cigarette'. In other words, it's up to each individual person to do their homework. We're all adults, amirite?

I also think that if we see some shill posting bogus reviews, we should be able call them out on it. So far, I've seen more integrity and class than anything else.
