Recently, I have been wanting to get into rewicking, and have taken a keen interest in it, primarily cause I have all the same coils (so same procedure with all) and because on the evodsprotanks its supposed to be really really easy.. Here's my problem... There just too much out there to even start getting my head around it all...

1. Should I build with silica or cotton..
2. Should I use ribbon or normal coil
3. Should I do regular or micro-coil
4. SS mesh, What is this?? and how is it used as a coil?
5. Is it worth recoiling? Evod/Protank coils are about $1.5 when bought in packs of 5.
6. Where is the place to get all the stuff from? Theres so many choices, what do you recommend?

I recoil/rewick my protank heads all the time.

TEMCO on Ebay has the best deal on wire I have seen so far. 100ft. of 32 Kanthal for about $6. That is enough to do an insane number of heads.

I got 2.5 mm silica wick at Amazon fairly cheap as well. You can come in well under the $1 a foot most places want.

4/5 wraps over 2.5 mm silica gets me a 1.8-2.1 ohm coil.

I have also used peaches and cream white cotton yard from wal mart with very good success. Just boil the yearn a couple of times in distilled water (changing the water between boilings) to get the fabric sizing out of it.

I tend to use the silica for protank heads so that I can dry burn them. You cannot dry burn cotton.

Either works fine though.

My advice on SS mesh is get good with silica or cotton first then do the homework on mesh as it is a bit more involved.

Personally, I like cotton wicks best for the flavor but, they will need replaced more often than some other materials. As for what to use, cotton candle wick, cheesecloth, even a flour sack towel will make a good cotton wick. (cheap is oil lamp wicks, lots of cotton wick in one of those, and not hard to unravel to get what you need.)

Since I spin I actually went so far as to spin cotton sliver into my own wicks at one point. :)

Cotton does work well. I just prefer the ability to dry burn rather than rewick again. I fully admit that is no more than a personal preference however.

^^ good advice. If you use cotton on your protank/evod and need to replace wick, I get about two tanks worth, just wash the head in water, remove the cotton wick, pulse the coil to burn off the gunk and toss another one in. Ekowool is another wick option, I've been using it in my Protank for a couple weeks and it works really well.

I just started rebuilding myself with 2mm Silica and Kanthal (30 and 32g). I rebuilt a few regular coils for the Protank, than once I got comfortable, built my first microcoil last night.. It's really great because theres a lot of coil on the Microcoil to burn the juice up but it's still low-ohm.. Gonna try with cotton tonight! Good luck :)

I started wit 32 guage kanthal and 5 wraps would get me @ 2 ohms. I'm in this for the vape quality and battery life. Going at low ohms (1.8 or lower) gives you clouds of vape but quickly drains your battery..not good for work. I want my vape to last thru my work day and I get that from higher ohm coils (2.2-2.6 ohms). Now I'm going with 34 guage kanthal with the same 5 wraps and getting 2.4 ohms inwhich gets me thru my work day. I also use 2mm ekowool that fits IMO my protank and T3's just right and with a 1mm flavor wick to add, I don't have leakng or flooding issues cause it adds to teh origional wicking to plug up any holes under the silicone cap. I rebuild my own heads not cause I can but cause I believe in the best vape I can get and with stock coils I have had nothing but chitty vapes. Rebuilding coils is super easy and there is no DOA's at all but the reward of vaping your own builds is priceless, even a little bit of DIY fixing stock coils and you will notice the difference in the vape you get.

gonna have to agree with everyone that said start simple. The ability to dry burn silica to check gives you some room to see the hot coil on your first few builds.

I don't see a need for ribbon kanthal in a kanger tank, just stick with standard 30 or 32 gauge kanthal. In a kangar tank, depending on wick thickness and gauge used, 30 or 32 at 5-6 wraps should get you in the 1.8-2.5 range. Obviously put it on a meter to test exactly where you are at.

work up from there.

Is it woth it at $1.50 to $2.50 for evod or T3's
I wasn't going to but after out of my last 10 heads 4 were DOA
I will

Somethings wrong about the heads you're buying then. I have not had any doa Kanger heads to date. I have a T3, T3S, Evod and Protank in my daily rotation. Still no reason not to rebuild though. It doesn't take long to become proficient and you can recoil and wick in less than 5 minutes.

Thanks everyone.. Great advice..

One thing i did notice is everyone was talking sub 2.0ohms..
Currently I vape at 2.5 ohms and fire up between 3.6-4.1V.

So what gauge and how many wraps would you recommend for that?

I use 32 gauge Kanthal over 2.5-3 mm silica. WIth 5 wraps I frequently hit between 2.2 and 2.6 ohms which is right in your range.

One trick I use is to hold and unbent paperclip with the silica as I wrap which prevents me from wrapping too tight. It also keeps the coil from being pulled too far into the atty as I lock down the wire "legs" in the bottom pieces. Once the whole thing is back together I just slide out the paperclip and trim the wick.

What size Ekowool are you using for the rebuild?

Probably 30ga / 6 wraps
34ga/6 gives me 1.5ohm

All those coils are probably good, but the center pin is not making contact with the battery.
