I am rewrapping my batteries. Its a Sony VTC4. The little black oval cap thing that goes around the positive end (underneath the skin) fell somewhere. Do I need it?? Thanks guys

The black "thingy" is a piece of insulation which helps to prevent short circuits. Yes, its there for a reason and is necessary.

I actually have a couple vtc's where I've lost or damaged that insulator before/during rewrapping.
As long as you wrap sufficiently enough to cover the neg lip on the pos end, you're good.

I just now tore the wrapper on this one getting it out of the luc v4 to show you.
I'll rewrap it in a few minutes.
But here's my daily drivers.

Cheers @beckdg Cool. Thanks for letting me know. I've only rewrapped 1 25r at the mo. I take a decent amount of precaution and always double check before I do something with these batteries, but I just feel not 100% safe. Even when my batteries are authentic. Moderately aged (not too much). I build high because I enjoy it neway. But all the negative stories, blunders and mistakes ppl make just convince me to keep using my regulated devices rather than mech mods. I just live in hope that my short circuit protection never fails. Fingers crossed. Thank you

Just simply put... if I said the insulator rings were absolutely necessary, I'd be lying.
So if you ever need to rewrap and happen to lose one, don't lose sleep over it.

Cheers sonicbomb. Yeah that's exactly how I did it minus the measure and cutting because fasttech provided me with some 18650 shrink wraps which were of perfect size. Thank you

Those rings are arc marks... signs of MOD abuse.
I'm running about 20 amps on those 30 amp batts.
Just the reo grand comes with insufficient positive contacts with a miniscule contact point on a very thin, springy contact.
I replaced it with a wide copper contact and I have no new arc pits on any cell I use in any of them.

Does completely charred and burnt through contacts count?if it was mod abuse then the mod would have the arc marks...

While the batts are still completely healthy everywhere except EXACTLY AND ONLY on that ring...
