I sent Richard Craver (author of the article) the bills Reynolds is sponsoring in OK, RI, NC, SC, and I sent him many of those same documents again yesterday (when he asked my views on Reynolds' announcement that it plans to market Vuse nationwide).

In response to his question if Reynolds marketing Vuse as an "American" e-cigarette might help it gain market share, I responded by telling him that's like calling my Toyota Prius an "American" car just because it was assembled in Tennessee. That comment didn't make his article either.

for convenience sake, RAI's official statement...

"Corporate Political Contributions

Products manufactured by the operating companies of Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) are sold, taxed and regulated in all 50 U.S. states. As a result, the companies' businesses can be affected both by laws and regulations that impact the business climate generally, as well as those that specifically govern the manufacture and sale of tobacco products.

Accordingly, RAI and its operating companies participate in the political and public policy process in a manner consistent with the law and the interests of their businesses. Two ways in which RAI and its operating companies participate are through contributions to political organizations, candidates and committees, in the jurisdictions that permit them, and contributions to tax-exempt organizations that advocate public policy positions or engage in lobbying activity.

RAI and its operating companies may not necessarily agree with all of the positions taken by each candidate or organization to which they contribute, but before making a contribution, RAI and its operating companies determine that the contribution is in line with the principles discussed in our statement of Vision and Beliefs, the policy positions discussed in the Transforming Tobacco section of this website, or is otherwise in the interests of the company. As a matter of policy, corporate contributions are not made based on any officer's or employee's personal political preferences. :glare:

RAI and its operating companies also retain the services of government relations consultants at the federal, state and local levels, as needed. Contracted lobbyists, and staff members registered to lobby, engage with elected officials and their staffs to communicate the companies’ viewpoints and perspectives on legislative and public policy matters. Such engagement is undertaken at the direction of the Public Affairs staff for RAI and its operating companies, under the supervision and approval of the executive vice president of Public Affairs. Lobbying expenses are disclosed in filings with appropriate federal and state agencies in accordance with applicable laws."

...it was only a matter of time before they officially announced they want "in."

Reynolds has received criticism at past shareholder meetings for its contributions to the American Legislative Exchange Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes a conservative political agenda. Some liberal advocates consider ALEC as anti-worker, anti-consumer, anti-environmental and anti-immigrant.
“As ALEC is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization prohibited from lobbying activity and cannot give money to political candidates, we do not report our contribution to them on our political contributions site,” Howard said.

Any time legislation appears in multiple states, ALEC is involved and ALEC is prohibited from lobbying? That's a fine line (or lie).

Interesting info on their political contributions, too bad it doesn't comment on their attempts to run out of business established e cig B&M and online vendors via the legislation they write and get a 'friend' of RJR (Nabisco) to introduce and push thru state houses.

I don't think it's by accident. They have a business model and they're working with government to attempt to get the market cornered to that model. If they truly have a "tobacco cigarette like" experience developed, a lot more smokers would move in that direction. Many then would find other flavors and say goodbye to the tobacco flavors and their product.

Reynolds is first to market of the BT companies with their own developed products. They have to be hoping they can cut into Altria's Marlboro) stranglehold of the "cigarette" market.

Whereabouts in Winston are you from autojohn? I grew up in Lewisville. Back in my day, we had forced busing and I went to school, literally, across the highway from RJR tobacco plant. We had no AC in the schools so the windows were always open and every morning at about 10:00, they would let that smoke out and it would seep into the classroom, making me nauseous.

"He said Vuse will be able to carve out a market niche because its technology “is superior to anything in the category and more similar to the typical consumer smoking experience.”

Sure Buddy. Okay, if that's what you think, bring it on. We welcome it.

Just plain marketing BS. Just like the former president of Blu (before being bought) stating that Blu is superior to any PV on the market.

Hey VV - I am not actually from Winston Salem- I was born in Alabama but landed in WS in 1985. They are still holding off on that air conditioning - it never used to get above 90 so the county has never wanted to pay for it - possibly in the newer schools, but no retrofitting. They have not processed tobacco downtown since they built the automated Tobaccoville plant- just outside of King. All the old factories, and there are a lot of them, have been turned into condos and a biochemical research park. Really nice old timbers and brick. Lewisville is now the boutique community - everyone is welcome as long as you have 500,000 to spend on a house. They do not want to become another Clemmons -- way to many strip malls and fast food places there. I live in the West End - up from Hanes Park and across from the RJ Reynolds High school.

I have tried twice to purchase one of RJR E-cigs. They have stopped their testing in North Carolina. The owner of the Tarheel Tobacco shops says that the RJR execs are planning a big release this summer. He is of the opinion that RJR is actually making the e-cigs and is skirting the Chinese patents by calling them digital cigarettes rather than electronic. This was second hand smoke, if you will, but if you do not make the hardware, the Chinese will only get richer. Also it appears that the legislation is aimed at commercial suppliers, drug stores, supermarkets, mall kiosks, etc. that sell those Blu type standard 510 e-cigs, and a lot of the taxing is based on Nicotine content - I can not see how they are going to try to regulate the pieces and parts market. If you have a mod that runs on standard batteries and can make your own liquid - the only thing I cannot make is my Vision Vivi Nova mini Tank. Any suggestions on what I could do in case worst come to worst would be appreciated :)

I don't know if this is related but I heard a radio commercial the other day for an electronic Swisher. It was geared to smokers and have you tried electronic cigs. The swishers I have seen in local carry outs are the swisher cigars or blunts which people use to smoke weed in. I have as yet to check into this and wondered isn't this a tobacco company? If it is are they too making a electronic version of a cigar?
