After having quit smoking for 10 years, I began having cravings again. My youngest son went from cigs to vaping so I thought I'd explore. Purchased a starter kit this past weekend, and am enjoying it extremely. As I was over the nic need, I went with just flavour, 0% nic. Question: am I at risk, now, for developing lung cancer, COPD any more so because of vaping than I would have been if I didn't start this.
All help appreciated.
Thanks,
Simon

Thanks - never even thought of the smoggy air argument!

Most don't.. The air of this planet even without man-made smog. Is highly toxic and IS poisoning us a little bit everyday.. This is part of why people die. The emmisions of Yellowstone National park and places like that, (volcanic) are much more hazardous to the health of every living thing on this planet than smoking. 1 volcano eruption emmits more cancer causing chemicals than every car, combined, ever made.

Question: am I at risk, now, for developing lung cancer, COPD any more so because of vaping than I would have been if I didn't start this.
There have been no long term, scientific studies on the effects of vaping. In fact, there have been hardly any studies done on the effects of nicotine without the aspect of smoke. So, there is no easy answer to your question.

Common wisdom would suggest that cancer caused from smoking is from inhaling combustible plant material along with all the other toxic chemicals that are in tobacco cigarettes. We're still learning about the effects of nicotine alone. Nicotine does have very similar properties to caffeine, a stimulent found in a variety of products. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor which can adversely affect blood vessels leading to hypertension, coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, as well as new bone growth (fractures, bone & joint surgery).

You're not using nicotine, so your risk of the above is diminished. However, little is known of the risks of the vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, or the flavoring agents found in e-cig vapor. It's not just "water vapor". Common sense would seem to indicate that the health risks involved with e-cigarettes are much less than with smoking, though.

My 18 y/o daughter was a non-smoker, but her boyfriend, brother, and closest friends all were smokers. She was feeling the usual peer pressures to begin smoking to fit in with her friends, and requested a vape setup for her birthday. She wanted to use 0% nicotine, just flavors, just as you are.

I reasoned that vaping 0% nicotine flavors was a better solution than to begin smoking. I recalled that I was her age when I began smoking, primarily because of peer pressure. It's been a year since she started vaping recreationally, and the side benefits have been that now her boyfriend, brother, and many of her friends are now vaping instead of smoking. Funny how that turned out. :)

I'd like for you to visit CASAA. It has the most up-to-date information on vaping. I'd also strongly urge you to join (its free), as they are our vaping advocates against over-regulation of e-cigarettes.

Vaping almost can't possibly be without risks. But as my physician says, it's about risk reduction, not elimination. And just by looking at the catastrophic list of chemicals known to cause cancer and other diseases in a cigarette compared to the very few in vaping, it's most definitely a reduction of risk.

The risk is very little especially when compared to smoking...

This is one of the few studies that go through real world scenarios not hypothetical guesstimates or lab conditions only...

Ecigs Health Effects R Cranfield Nov 24 2015.pdf

Out of the 500 or so people surveyed that vaped for 3 or more years 10 of them were never smokers, out of the listed risks that we'd normally associate with smoking tobacco cigarettes none of the 10 were diagnosed with any of them.

smokers that switched to vaping after 3 years saw a 63% resolution (issues that went away) that were diagnosed while they were smokers.

Yes. You are more at risk than if you never vaped or smoked. Basically over inhalation of anything beyond PURE air has more risk than not inhaling those things. Is there a quantifiable risk? I DOUBT IT Is there more risk than breathing smoggy air, NO.

Only problem with this thought is the smoggy air is a given. The vaping is in addition.

The short answer is, yes you are more at risk because you are inhaling an unknown commodity. Anything unknown or unproven is a risk until such time as it proven to be safe.

My Doctor said basically the same thing, She literally jumped for joy when I told her I quit smoking. She made it clear right away she would prefer I get down to 0 nic, I'm at 3 nic now. She told me the risks of vaping vs smoking were much less. I have COPD but I no longer need steroid inhalers since a couple months after I started vaping instead of smoking. IMHO, the risks are much lower even taking into consideration our smoggy air.
