Ok Riva 510 is now in use for the first time, first time vaping also for me.
I'm trying to adjust my draw as there is no way I can do a 5sec draw like some suggest. I would choke to death, lol.
Question is, why is the TH so powerful and make you start coughing? I have smoked analogs for 35 years and I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong to be having such a strong sensation that makes me cough.
I've read and read the last week on here while I waited on my new toy, so I think I've got most of it down. I'm using cartomizers and a cola 18mg which isnt bad, takes like RC Cola. Tried a tobacco flavor I thought I would want and nearly gagged,,lol.
Is there a way to start out that doesn't have you coughing? Does that eventually stop? I soooo do not want to have to go back to the "stinkys"

If the atomizer is running a little dry, it will burn my throat. However, everyone I know that tries vaping the initial response is coughing fits. Remember the first time you smoked? Did you inhale into your lungs? If so I believe you probably coughed or at least choked on it. I smoked for 35 years... I forced myself to like vaping, and... well I love it. I can't even smok a cigarette now cause of the nastiness. And yes more VG less PG to decrease the Throat Hit.

I depress the button a split second before I begin my draw and take about a three second draw, releasing the button at least half a second before the draw ends. Take whatever draws make you feel comfortable. I suspect your throat will get used to it and you can take longer draws later, but you may not find that you want or need to either.

Keep in mind that PG is a humectant, so your coughing may just be the result of a sudden drying sensation in your throat that your body is not used to yet. Obviously, make sure you are drinking plenty of water.

Thanks for all the tips, I'll try he suggestions. I already drink tons of water, in fact rarely drink anything else so that is not an issue. I seem to be having trouble getting any inhale once the vape hits my throat, but I won't give up. What little I have been able to inhale has kept me from wanting an analog so that's good in my book.!!

I only coughed on the 2 first hits with my riva, I hope you get used to it. I would try a few things, use the cart and don't add a lot of juice. The Riva 510 came with 10 carts so get a new one and try 2 drops of e juice on it and let it sit a few minutes before vaping it. You can even not inhale the first 2 hits. Make sure your not dripping directly into the atomizer or the hits come harder. The other thing that helped my throat out is having some juice (not e-juice) before vaping. Water is great but something like orange juice will hang in your throat and provide a little protection. Hope it works out for you.

You could also try not inhaling the first 2 draws on the e cig after adding e-liquid

100% PG is a bit harsh, especially when you start. As others have said, yes you can cut it with some vg (even 10% will help smooth it out a bit) but it will also cut the flavor and nicotine by that amount. You may be able to get a blank dropper bottle from a pharmacist (either a commercial bottle or the one pharmacies use for prescription drops) and you could use that to mix up some of your PG juice w/ some USP Glycerin.

Also - did you get the primer out of your atomizer before you started using it? That is a lot harsher. if you didn't do that, then remove the atty and blow through it into a tissue. Then prime the little mesh bridge in it with a few drops of ejuice, wait a minute, then vape that off without inhaling. That should help get rid of primer.

You don't need 5 second drags - drag what feels ok to you when you start. I have manual batteries and do something like:
press in button - 1/2 to 1 second later start dragging - drag for 2-3 seconds - let up button - while continuing to drag out the remaining vapor for 1-2 seconds (so at max 5 seconds but not all with the button down).

And if you get any burny tastes, see if the cart needs to be topped off and always try to line up the 510 cart's juice cup w/ the atty

I say, push on through!! Drink plenty of water. I liked milk, because it tends to coat the throat a little and soothes while hydrating. Keep at it, for most people it is a temporary thing. But, everybody I know has coughed and had throat irritation just a little when trying my pv for the first time.

I actually just picked up my Riva510 and a few different juices from LF, so I am kind of going through the same thing.

I've found that on VG, I can take a big hefty rip and I barely notice it (akin to hookah), then with PG it can really irritate my throat. For that reason, I smoked a lot more VG the first day (also, lower nic levels as that seemed to help the flavor come through a bit imho)

For the first few carts/cartos I was having some problems coughing, but now going into my third day I can take pulls all day long of PG/VG/mix of the two and I have no problem at all.

Just give it some time, also I learned that, just like an analog, at different times during my day I can take different types of pulls and they affect my throat differently. It just takes some time to figure out your draw and how it works best with your device.

One thing i did notice is that when I underfill my carts/cartos (which i did regularly my first day), it made the vapor a lot hotter and really caused me some discomfort. Be aware of that and make sure you are giving your riva enough juice!

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the encouragement. I am using the cartomizers instead of the atomizers right now, could that affect it as well? Make it a bit more harsh or something? I smoked Virginia Slim ultra light 120's and I know most people feel they get nothing from them, so might be the nic at 18 is too strong for me?

I smoked Marlboro Ultra Lights and for me 18 is about the highest Nic I need (I will definitely still hit up my 24mg on days with bad analog pangs though). On my second order I have a mix of 18mg and 12mg and think that I will probably hit my sweet spot with nicotine at about 12% here shortly.

I have heard varying opinions on nic level in juice and it seems that some believe it is directly related to flavor and others (like myself, though with limited experience) that think it is an inverse relationship. So, that is sort of a toss up...my guidelines for my next order was lighter nic for the flavors I think I'll vape regularly and higher nic for those occasional cravings.

For the first few days, many have problems with the harshness as did I. I would suggest NOT to do a full inhale into the throat for a couple of days while you adjust. Just draw into the mouth and exhale. Increase a little more the second day and by third you should be able to do a full inhale into the throat. This happened to me as well and this is what helped me adjust.
I also agree that the PG strength is a factor as well. I don't like 100% PG at all. Way to strong and I was a menthol smoker for years.
I would also suggest getting the Boge soft tip cartomizers. They are sooooo easy to fill and use.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Thank you everyone!! Ya'll are so much appreciated since I would be totally lost without this forum. This morning I tried the vape again and it didn't make me cough,,yeahh. Later in the day however the irritation came back but not as bad so I think between adding some VG to dilute and taking it easy on the draws I'm slowly adjusting. Though I wuold like to toss the analogs NOW, guess it's best to keep some around for a day or two until I get used to this.
I don't even want one except for the needed nicotine that I'm not currently getting but at least it's been 3 or 4 the last two days instead of a pack.
Thank you , thank you, thank you ALL
