I can't help you with the silica but I can tell you how I do it: I make a micro coil which is positioned vertically to the deck right over the hole leading to the tank (not the fill hole but the one you'd put mesh in.....) I then thread in, from the top of the coil, a long piece of cotton that eventually makes it way to the bottom of the tank. I don't leave the cotton flush with the top of the coil, I leave some extra hanging out. I also put enough into the tank so that when it's time to rewick all I have to do is just pull the wick up through the coil and trim it. This works well if your tank is not empty. If it is then wicking from the tank up might be a better option if you don't mind taking your tank apart. I don't like to do that if I don't have to. There is a you tube video of this, which is how I learned it but it doesn't show to leave wick at the top of the coil so re-wicking is a pain, but I can't find it.

Maybe something similar with silica could be done?

here is a link to a set up for cotton on a rsst. I have always ran mesh in mine but that looks like it wold work well. I prefer to run 500 mesh and ribbon kanthal with my builds but that cotton build looks like ti will get the job done, I might just give it a try.

That one looks pretty good. Plus, a lot of people don't put the fill plug back in. Using both holes might eliminate a bit of mess....

oh cool ok yea ill have to try that one.... ive never used mesh ..but i got 28g n 30g kanthal wire.. how many wraps should i use 7/8? .. thx guys for the help. much appreciated

Search the site, the easiest way is to copy and paste the next line into googles search bar:

site:http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ kanthal coil calc.xls

if you have access to excel or another program that will read it. Libre Office etc.... It'll show you how many wraps on different diameters, using different gauge wire, to achieve the resistance you want. Really helpful.

The above is the only way I search sites. Much better than the search most sites have.... Hope this helps!

Edit: we really can't tell you how many wraps unless we know the diameter of the object that will be used to wrap the wire around and the desired resistance. That's for cotton. For silica I don't know as I only use micro coils and cotton.

Great chart!! Been looking for that! Thanks!! I have an RSST on the way and going to try the ego wool wrapped steel rope.

You're quite welcome. It's a pleasure giving back the knowledge I've learned here, from other's hard work! (I only look mean in my avatar. I do smile. Sometimes :)

Edit: I see you've just signed up. Welcome!

After using the chart, noticed there is no option for dual coils. Is there a simple explanation of how the ohms will change going from single to double coils?

If the coils are the same ohms then the resultant ohms of the two coils will be half of one of the single coils. If they're not the same it's a different calculation, one I don't have at hand.

Edit: here's a site that offers a calculator to calculate resistance of two different coils including those that are different from one another:
