Well, earlier today I dropped by my neighborhood vape store to discuss getting my day old IGO drilled out to increase airflow when the lady behind the counter informed me I had accumulated $25 worth of store credit from loyalty points. Figured hey, 2 more IMRs or get myself a basic rba for when dripping is too much of a hassle. (Or just something else to learn). At the time no one on the clock had actually coiled/wicked one before so I couldn't watch someone with know how do it, nor did they know how to do ss mesh. They informed me that the fellow who helped me with my IGO yesterday at the other location was my best choice, sadly I just couldn't make it to that side of town today.

So I got on here, read about using cotton as an auto dripper and figured I'd give that a shot. Man did it take some time having never recoiled anything before, just watched the gentleman set up my IGO yesterday. My first decent coil came out as 2 ohm and it was pleasant enough on my vammo, but after 30 mins it was time to tinker again. Awhile later managed to get my single microcoil down to 1.2 and thought it tasted great but was having wicking issues. Came on here and read and read and read until I figured I would try my hand at setting up a dual coil on this beast.

Then I read bender817's post on his nested coils and aimed for that. Dunno how, maybe it was my hours of fiddling that got me semi steady hands, but first attempt I nailed it, I think. .8ohms with 28 guage kanthal 7-8 wrap nested dualie and wha-la. Hitting almost as hard as my rda with much better wicking. Below is a pick, let me know if you see anything that is wrong as I'm enjoying learning and will accept all constructive criticism.

Well I wrapped a nested coil so I guess it really would be 14-16 since it's 2x7-8s? Not sure proper terminology. Quickly realizing though that I'm not really digging the flavor. Purchased watermelon today for the first time, and really liked it in the cartos at the shop. Probably need to try it in my standard protank for comparison before I start wondering if somehow my setup has changed it that drastically.

Congrats and very cool and fun to tinker around with, my first rebuildable was a smoktek rsst. My only constructive criticism is getting those wires on the coil for the bottom side a little closer together, maybe its just the picture quality, but it seems as if the wire was bent down to fit the negative post, and in doing so kinked the bottom side of the coil to become undone and unwound a little bit. After I have checked the ohms, I pulse my mod, and make sure the wires fire red from the inside out, and use tweezers to push the coil tighter together. But avoid all loose or overlapping kanthal.

The very bottom coil is ever so slightly off the matched nesting coil, but when fired the coil turns red from the inside out. I am not seeing any overlapping or hotlegs in my inspection. On my next rebuild I hope to keep that bottom piece snug to it's brother though. Is that wee bit of separation a dangerous risk or something to just make better next time?

If your firing correctly, and do not see any hot spots, more power to you and indeed great job. What I am hitting on is more ascetic look, and a "know of" that if wires are to far from the coil they were wrapped you are at risk for snapping, as well as hot spots. If all is as you say, again fantastic job, especially for your first build. Came out cleaner than mine did back in the day. *thumbsup*

By no means claiming to be an expert, just appears based on what little I've seen that it's firing evenly. For now I am back on my IGO till I get a chance to hitup the other location that knows more about RBAs and have the guy make sure I didn't create a mini-bomb. But when dry firing my understanding is that hotspots/hotlegs are when the legs, or a portion of the leg turns red?

Looks like 10-11 wraps, but overall looks great. Nice build. I have an rsst and tried mesh again and think I am going back to cotton again. Damn mesh can't keep up with me.

Congrats.

I'm a mesh head at heart. Its a tinkerer's game but its a labor of love. The trick is keeping it around .8 - 1 ohm and not having too much airflow on it. Mesh is not for cloud chasing, but rather for achieving a sharper flavor. I really like 400 because 500 is just a hair too dense for me.

I did a lot of experimenting on the RSST's and I think that's a great looking build, goose. Maybe next time wrap around something a little smaller because the inner diameter of the coil greatly affects flavor production. You also don't want to fill the wick hole completely because it slows the wicking down. What I have had luck with is a 5/64" id coil, and have it positioned toward the outer part of the wick hole, leaving a little wick gap on the inside (toward the center post) that way when you give it a tilt (airhole in line with coil and pointing at you) the juice with be flowing on the top of the wick and not puddling on your deck. Mesh is worth a try for sure. JC West has a tutorial that shows the easiest way to get mesh running. Tutorial: Setting up a genesis atomizer from scratch with hotspot fixing - YouTube

Some use silica and ekowool. I'm just not one of those people. I hate the taste of silica, but when it works it works well.

Keep on tinkering, and happy building and vaping! :vapor:
