Russian 91 Disassembly

Got my polished Russian 91 and an I-Taste SVD the other day. Did a 2mm coil with the silicon wick and 30 ga wire they send which wound up at about 2.1 ohms. Tasted like crap. Did another one around 1.5 mm with cotton at about 1.9 ohms. Tastes much better. Question is can I disassemble the contraption without draining the tank? It's not a big deal to blow the juice out into a bottle and take the whole thing apart but I see no way to change coil/wick without taking it down all the way. When I unscrew the base it's kind of random what will come apart with it. If just base came off it would be ok but sometimes the chimney comes with it or the chimney ring and out goes the juice. Is there a secret or do you just wait until you have an empty tank to do maintenance?

If you want to rebuild it, it needs to be drained. Also, I find that if I put a little bit of juice on the top portion of the chimney before I give it a good tightening, it comes off easily without unscrewing the chimney. I'd disassemble the whole thing, clean it, and make sure that you're tightening down the top part of the chimney REALLY well. this will prohibit it from unscrewing it when you have to take off the top portion to refill. Just my 2cents and YMMV.

Invest in a syringe to remove the unused juice if you have to tinker with it. Then all you'll have to do is just push down the plunger into your freshly cleaned system, and refill the rest of the way depending on how low your reservoir was.

Also, if you want to use the coil they send, I would advise to clean and wash the wick and wire thoroughly.

The one nice thing about the RCS tanks like a Protank is that you can remove the coil with a full tank. After tasting the R91 though I'll stick with that. Plus I'm tired of the RCS units always flooding. I was resisting cotton but I think I may have been converted. Now I'm going to have to try micro coils and such. Thanks.
