From their site "Keep passwords and security codes secret" (three digit code in the signature bar) can't do that at a vendor and that's the problem for all of us. They require that password/code (the one on the back of most other cards) and that gets typed on the site and in to the processing center that gets hacked. That's exactly how the thieves are getting away with using the cards.

Any card that's a DEBIT card, your funds are at risk if someone gets the number - as whatever the account or card has access to can be immediately withdrawn. With a visa or m/c CREDIT card, by regulation, the bank will reverse charges and credit back to you any fraudulent transactions. You gotta buy online with a CREDIT card - even if it's one that's secured by funds you give the bank in advance...

With this system the bank keeps track and contacts you right away too confirm the transaction, and you only load up the cost of the order in the account is comes out off, with a regular credit card they dont check, this Visa Debit Card system is safer.

I don't think you can make a blanket statement like that. I use debit without overdraft protection and only keep under $5.00 in it. I load the cost of whatever I'm purchasing to the card while I'm checking out at the vendor's. It goes in from another account I have and comes right out to the vendor in less than 5 minutes. Additionally that account has alerts on it to notify me of ANY type of transaction above $.50. Also, the bank has its own security monitoring and I've traveled outside my local area stopping for gas which I couldn't buy because the bank put a block on the account automatically. When I called they explained that the purchase looked suspiscious to them and apologized... which wasn't necessary. I was happy they watched so closely. If a thief did get past all this and got the $5.00... so what? The fee for some of these types of credit card or gift cards or virtual cards would exceed that and it would be every month or with every load. The debit card caution used to be true but things have changed with the high rates of theft. Banks are offering more services. Also, there are many, many, posts here where people's banks are not deducting for obvious theft. As for credit cards, they also say your purchases are insured... ie: you won't have to pay if there's something wrong with the product. Every tried to get them to honor that? I have... absolutely ridiculous what they want as "proof" and it eventually turns into a "throw up your hands and give up" situation.... very "bait and switch."
