5v has been by many, to be the "sweet spot". It used to be the easiest way to hit that was to use a booster/regulator to get to 5v. Now with the increase in HV atty availability it sometimes makes sense to just do 6v or 7.4v and use a HV atty to bring the wattage back down to the 5v equavilent. If you haven't seen Ralph T's great chart showing different voltages with different attys here it is: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modders-forum/71422-atomizer-battery-watts-chart.html

Oh and to answer your initial question, I'm using a pv right now running at 7.4v with a HV atty. Also keep in mind that depending upon how you're powering a usb device it might not be 5v (for instance through your computer).
