Hi, I'm not new to vaping but am new to the ECF.
I just bought a Vulcan rda and I normally build coils at 1.0 ohm or higher. I had someone in the b&m build my coil for me when I purchased the Vulcan and it was built at .6 ohm.
I use a Vaporshark and was wondering if there is a certain wattage that I should avoid going over or if it's safe to go as high as 30w?

Thanks and appreciate any responses or recommendations.

If you are new to rebuildables I highly recommend you spend some time with Baditude (one of our resident battery experts) and visit his blogs. Baditudes Blogs. The blogs regarding battery safety, Ohm's Law, amp draw are listed below:

BATTERIES

9. Battery Basics for Mods: IMR or Protected ICR?
* Another essential read to understand which batteries are safe to use in mechanical and regulated mods. Includes a frequently updated list of recommended safe-chemistry, high-drain batteries with their specifications.

17. Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised
* A cautionary blog that reveals that the purple Efest batteries may not have the specifications advertised. Also includes a commentary on "continuous discharge ratings" vs "pulse discharge ratings" of battery specs.

OHM'S LAW

14. Ohm's Law for Dummies (Vapers)
* My attempt at explaining Ohm's Law in layman terms and how it relates to vaping.

16. Explain it to the Dumb Noob: Ohm's Law Calculations
* As simple as it is to use, some people have a tough time grasping the concept. Warning: Includes graphic photos of mod explosions.

BATTERIES - WHERE TO BUY

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

The DNA 30 will not fire a coil if it deems it dangerous.

That being said.

I think it is ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE for a vape-shop to wrap you a coil and send you home without any information regarding battery safety and safe vaping in general. How do they know if you are not going to use the atty on a mech? How do they know what kind of battery you will throw in the said mech?

Vape-shops have to make sure that their customers are knowledgeable about their purchase before leaving the shop. Period.

In the mean time, educate yourself, you are in the right place here.

I actually requested a build of at least 1 ohm to 1.5, but the guy said he would "help" me and I checked the ohms and was kinda ...... off it was .6 . He kept telling me the rdna could handle it and insisted it was better that way. I should have insisted he change it but I was already getting attitude and figured I could rebuild it later.

I couldn't agree more. I learned the other day that my local shop won't even do builds for people because of, well stupid people. They have a no hands policy, if you bring something in and say "Hey, could you give me some advice on this wicking or coil?" they'll look at it but they never touch anything.

That's asshattery. Kudos to you for making sure you're doing things safely.

To correct myself, the rDNA30's limits are 10 amps and 8.3 volts. This means it will only deliver it's full 30 watts between 0.3 and 2.3 ohms. 1-1.5 would have put it right in the middle of it's power range.

Chances are the B&M guy was stuck in the mech mentality of lower ohms = higher watts = better performance. Personally, I'd get in touch with the shop owner and let him know whats up. If "the guy" is the owner...find a new shop.

Thanks for the correction. Question, If I take one of the coils off will this leave me with higher ohms, around 1.0 ?

I don't have any wire to rebuild right now and I'm anxious to use the Vulcan!

Eh, the shop has a few locations and I've usually had good experiences there but this time I just happened to deal with a jerk.

If it's at .6 now with.two coils pulling a coil off will give you 1.2, right about the money spot for DNA 30 device, IMHO. Nothing wrong or unsafe about using the .6 build, but you're gonna have to crank the watts, probably 20+ to get anything out of it.

Thanks! I think I'll take off a coil and see how that goes.
