Today I set up my iTaste VTR with my first coil in a Patriot (I went single coil to simplify). The Ohms (after a few tries) came out to 2.9. I read the safety table and understand it (now) but I was wondering how I know what my battery can handle?

The specs for my battery are as follows:

  • Item name: Purple High power Samsung battery 18650 2200mAh INR18650 for Samsung li-ion battery cell
  • Min. Capacity: 2100mAh
  • Typical Capacity: 2200mah
  • Nominal Voltage: 3.6v
  • Constant current(Standard Charge): 1075mah
  • Constant voltage(Standard Charge): 4.2 V
  • End current (cut off): 50ma
  • Max charge voltage: 4.2v
  • Max charge current: 2150mah
  • Constant current(standard discharge): 430mah
  • End voltage (cut off)(standard discharge): 3.0v
  • Max discharge current: -20 ~ 5°C 1250mA
  • 5 ~ 45°C 5000mA
  • 45 ~ 60°C 3750mA
  • Weight: Max 47g
  • Certification: CE,UL,ROHS

Which numbers in these specs can tell me about my safe amp draw? Also is there a specific ohms range I should be going for or is 2.9 good enough? Thanks in advance, sorry about all the questions this is my very first self made anything and I want to be sure to be safe.

I was in a hurry earlier I missed this on the next line:
5 ~ 45°C 5000mA
That's 5 amps. Now you're looking at 17.5 watts; that's much better. It may be safe with your 2.9 ohm coil, but it gives you zero safety margin against the 15 watts that your VTR is capable of. For mid-range regulated devices that can produce 15-20 watts (and no more!), you want battery capable of a 10 amp discharge rate. My personal recommendation would be a Panasonic NCR18650PF or NCR18650PD. With 2900 mAh of capacity, they are awesome, and they're only $10 each from Orbtronic.

I haven't built a Patriot, but something tells me that 2.9 ohms is not going to be quite optimal. Of course, much depends on your coil geometry, your wick, and your vaping style. Two of them in parallel might be OK to start with. ;)

Thanks for coming back to correct yourself, I was totally in a panic. The Patriot was my first build ever so it didn't come out so great I didn't realize before I started that double coils halves the ohms so it was a learning curve I crashed into headfirst, I'll give it another go tomorrow. I did get to taste organic boiled cotton wicks instead of silica and it was amazeballs. As to the battery capacity I only go up to 7.5 watts when I vape so that is good news. But I'll be replacing this battery with the ones you recommended :) Don't want to end up on the news.
