Kanthal, assumed it was rusting up looks like rust to me.

Not sure what Variant of Kanthal you are using? 70, 52, A, etc.

But Yes... I believe that Most/All Kanthal Alloys contain a Percentage of Iron.

BTW - Not All Coil Wires contain Iron. Ni-Chrome 80 is a Good Example of something that Doesn't Not. And something that Can Not "Rust".

regardless of salt or no salt I've noticed they gunk up faster then they'll rust. I've actually never seen a rusted coil. Are you sure your not mistaking the black charcol like gunk from burnt on flavoring deposits for rust? You can dry burn that stuff off the coil.

28G A-1 Kanthal I would send a photo but I just re coiled it. I'll keep an eye on it and post a photo when it gets rusty looking again.

Cool... Pictures speak 1,000 Words.

Here is the Make-Up of Kanthal A-1

MatWeb - The Online Materials Information Resource

Even though it contains about 70% Iron, with >20% Chromium it would have a Hard Time Forming Iron Oxides.

Kanthal A-1 is Basically Stainless Steel minus the Nickel.
