Tomorrow the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is having a hearing to discuss/vote on legislation that would ban e-cigarettes wherever cigarettes are banned. If you live in SF and have the time attend this hearing and tell your story, if not then please email your supervisor asking him/her to vote against this ban.
I, unfortunately, can't make the hearing but here is the email I sent to my supervisor.
Mr. Weiner,
Tomorrow the board of supervisors is holding a hearing regarding categorizing e-cigarettes as tobacco products and banning them wherever regular cigarettes are banned. This is shortsighted, will negatively affect the health of thousands of registered San Francisco voters and is just wrong. I could throw study after study that show e-cigarettes are harmless at you but instead will just tell you my story, which is like thousands of others.
I smoked a pack and a half a day for 30 years. I coughed myself to sleep every night and woke up coughing every morning. I became out of breath just going up a flight of stairs. I food that was horribly unhealthy, was quite overweight and had high blood pressure. Then about a year ago I discovered e-cigarettes.
I put out a cigarette as I approached the vapor store, it turns out, that was the last cigarette I ever smoked. At the store I had consultation, answering such questions as, how much did I smoke, what brand and what was ultimate goal. ( It should be noted here that the store does not allow minors to enter). I was sold a simple starter kit with 2 batteries, a few clearomizers ( not the cartridges that everyone assumes e-cigarettes use) and 30ml of e-liquid containing 12mg of nicotine.
After 2 weeks I had stopped coughing. Over the course of the next year I found I could go up stairs without becoming winded and my blood pressure is back to normal. I started working out and eating healthier. As a result I have lost 25 pounds. My doctor is amazed at the changes and is now recommending e-cigarettes to his patients who smoke. Finally I have steadily reduced the nicotine level to zero.
I am happier and healthier because of the miracle of e-cigarettes. They have literally added years to my life.
My story is not unique. I hear similar stories from other vapers everyday.
I understand why the board feels these miracles need to be relegated to the hinterlands with cigarettes. It looks like smoking so must be as bad as smoking. They have nicotine so must be tobacco products. They come in flavors so save the children. Mr. Wiener, don't fall for this propaganda! vaping is nothing like smoking. Vapor is not harmful and saves lives. Not all e-cigarettes contain nicotine and are therefore not tobacco products.
San Francisco has long been the leader in embracing a healthy lifestyle. Continue this by not jumping on the anti-e-cigarette bandwangon and recognize e-cigarettes for what they are, A miracle of technology that is helping to save lives. By forcing e-cigarette users (vapers) to vape only in smoking areas will expose them to second hand smoke and all of the health issues related to it.
Thank you for your time Mr. Wiener, and please do what is right for San Francisco and vote against this proposal.
