Mouth piece update added on pg 2...
Well, I'm not even sure this would as qualify as a mod, but here it is. At least it's good for a laugh. But believe or not, it's now my favorite e-cig... well, at least until my SD arrives sometime next week, I guess!
It's a saw-off DSE 801 Drip custom. I love my 801 - but I had my ups and downs. Probably they are my own error, but here they are.
1. I was keep tasting funny wax like taste - probably overheated, dry fillers in the cartridge. Although there's some liquid left in the cart, only the part the wic is touching became quite dry. Maybe I could use a coffee filter or tea bag for new filler etc...
2. While I did get plenty of vapor production with normal carts - but due to the distance it has to travel from the atomizer, through cool cartridge vents, through mouth piece and all... I'm getting pretty cold vapor. Works great for minty stuff - but I really enjoyed rn4081's warm vapor with more defined taste of 901. 801, for me, was neither.
3. I also heard that someone actually vapes w/o mouth piece. Thankfully, 801 has long atomizer which is good for doing so (w/o worry of burning lips) - but for a newb like me, it's literally impossible to aim the drip. The metal wick is just way too far down there... at least 1.25 inches deep.
So here it is. Saw-Off Drip Custom. Very crude, but it produces tons of "WARM" vapor.
As you can see, I took out little more than 1/2 inch off the atomizer end.
End product is just tad little bit shorter than 901. I find I cut little too much... I cut off about 5/8 inches off, while in retrospect, 1/2 inch is about the perfect cut.
Here's a tool that I cut the atomizer with. My atomizer is BE112 atomizer - BestEcig's el-cheapo 801 atomizer, but with very good gigantic metal wick, begging for some dripping action! I bought a 5 pack, at 5 dollars each, IIRC - and one of them, the opening was too small for cartridge. I had to use pliers to put/take out the cart - so that atty became my guinea pig for this experiement.
The small pipe cutter belongs to my wife, who is a scenic designer. In her grad school days, she built quite a few models - some using small metal pipes. I believe she bought the cutter from PearlPaint downtown NYC - maybe a few bucks max.
All you have to do is tighten the knob on the right, and rotate the atomizer any direction you want. With enough rotation, it will cut the atomizer to any length you want. Best to mark 1/2 point with a marker to begin though - so that you won't make the same mistake that I have.
After cutting, I used a jewelry pile that I had, and smoothed out the sharp edges. Then I used some fine sand paper (400 - 600 grit) to polish. After that, wash the atomizer with running water, to dispose any impurities left. Drain, Dry, etc.
here are some pics of cut pieces. sharp edges, so beware.
Size comparison. As I mentoined before, 1/2 inch should be the perfect.
Now, the metal wick is very near. Very easy to drip. I am not using any mouth piece at all - just straight vape from there. Haven't had any issues nor didn't burn my lips. Regular batts, and even kensington pass through didn't burn my lips Little warm, but not too bad. Reminds me of when the analog is burning near to the filter. But vapor, is very nice and warm, with possibly, most 1st hand taste of the vapor itself. Super easy draw, almost like a cigar. Awesome vapor production with very little effort - that I tend to do short draws most of the time - and works perfect for me.
I don't recommend sawing off for upcoming Prodigy v1 801 - as I hear it will be running 6v, and runs very hot I could be wrong, but it might heat up the atomizer little too much, and might burn your lips occasionally.
This was my original vision when I started cutting the atty. Just the mouth-piece. However, the rough edge was just cutting into the mouth-piece, leaving small plastic particles. Burnt plastic = no good vaping. so I took out. Also, my cut-off atty isn't perfectly round, so some air was find its way into the atty, disturbing actual vapor producting air intake from the attys front holes. Something to think over. (maybe metal tape might just work, but I'm little concerned about the adhesive. Foil could work to fill the gap, but durability is an issue as well.)
So this is how I decided to protect the large opening. Simple. Just a cap from an empty juice sampler. (Thanx, Steve!
Also, MVS uses the same cap too... and I"m pretty sure other vendors might be using the same cap.)
But it's also relatively loose fit - so this is what I'd be using. A pencil case that I bought from Japanese store near new NY times building on 41st and 8th (I think) Ave. Cost me a few bucks, but makes a nice case.
And I used the foam from the original packaging. I wish it was thicker so that I could put a 6ml bottle, and perhaps room for another atty, but this keeps my batts and stuff in place.
Hope you enjoyed my silly mod. But it does work quite well, and it instantly took over as my #1 choice of e-cig at home. Also, thanks to the larger hole, it's easier to drip while taking a walk - so a small bottle in your pocket, you'll just do fine on the go, w/o making a mess (I don't recommend dripping while driving though!)
lachesis
PS. Don't stick your tongue in it while it's hot. LOL.
PPS. Excuse my poor engrish... (not a native speaker, but I am trying..)
