Mouth piece update added on pg 2...

Well, I'm not even sure this would as qualify as a mod, but here it is. At least it's good for a laugh. But believe or not, it's now my favorite e-cig... well, at least until my SD arrives sometime next week, I guess! :D

It's a saw-off DSE 801 Drip custom. I love my 801 - but I had my ups and downs. Probably they are my own error, but here they are.

1. I was keep tasting funny wax like taste - probably overheated, dry fillers in the cartridge. Although there's some liquid left in the cart, only the part the wic is touching became quite dry. Maybe I could use a coffee filter or tea bag for new filler etc...

2. While I did get plenty of vapor production with normal carts - but due to the distance it has to travel from the atomizer, through cool cartridge vents, through mouth piece and all... I'm getting pretty cold vapor. Works great for minty stuff - but I really enjoyed rn4081's warm vapor with more defined taste of 901. 801, for me, was neither.

3. I also heard that someone actually vapes w/o mouth piece. Thankfully, 801 has long atomizer which is good for doing so (w/o worry of burning lips) - but for a newb like me, it's literally impossible to aim the drip. The metal wick is just way too far down there... at least 1.25 inches deep.

So here it is. Saw-Off Drip Custom. Very crude, but it produces tons of "WARM" vapor.

d0027587_4a0903a7be2a3.jpg

As you can see, I took out little more than 1/2 inch off the atomizer end.
End product is just tad little bit shorter than 901. I find I cut little too much... I cut off about 5/8 inches off, while in retrospect, 1/2 inch is about the perfect cut.

d0027587_4a0903bc2f18e.jpg

Here's a tool that I cut the atomizer with. My atomizer is BE112 atomizer - BestEcig's el-cheapo 801 atomizer, but with very good gigantic metal wick, begging for some dripping action! I bought a 5 pack, at 5 dollars each, IIRC - and one of them, the opening was too small for cartridge. I had to use pliers to put/take out the cart - so that atty became my guinea pig for this experiement.

The small pipe cutter belongs to my wife, who is a scenic designer. In her grad school days, she built quite a few models - some using small metal pipes. I believe she bought the cutter from PearlPaint downtown NYC - maybe a few bucks max.

All you have to do is tighten the knob on the right, and rotate the atomizer any direction you want. With enough rotation, it will cut the atomizer to any length you want. Best to mark 1/2 point with a marker to begin though - so that you won't make the same mistake that I have. ;)

After cutting, I used a jewelry pile that I had, and smoothed out the sharp edges. Then I used some fine sand paper (400 - 600 grit) to polish. After that, wash the atomizer with running water, to dispose any impurities left. Drain, Dry, etc.

d0027587_4a0903c0a0a5e.jpg

here are some pics of cut pieces. sharp edges, so beware. :)

d0027587_4a0903c4eca36.jpg

Size comparison. As I mentoined before, 1/2 inch should be the perfect.

d0027587_4a0903ca58e26.jpg

Now, the metal wick is very near. Very easy to drip. I am not using any mouth piece at all - just straight vape from there. Haven't had any issues nor didn't burn my lips. Regular batts, and even kensington pass through didn't burn my lips Little warm, but not too bad. Reminds me of when the analog is burning near to the filter. But vapor, is very nice and warm, with possibly, most 1st hand taste of the vapor itself. Super easy draw, almost like a cigar. Awesome vapor production with very little effort - that I tend to do short draws most of the time - and works perfect for me.

I don't recommend sawing off for upcoming Prodigy v1 801 - as I hear it will be running 6v, and runs very hot I could be wrong, but it might heat up the atomizer little too much, and might burn your lips occasionally.

d0027587_4a0903d0d63a3.jpg

This was my original vision when I started cutting the atty. Just the mouth-piece. However, the rough edge was just cutting into the mouth-piece, leaving small plastic particles. Burnt plastic = no good vaping. so I took out. Also, my cut-off atty isn't perfectly round, so some air was find its way into the atty, disturbing actual vapor producting air intake from the attys front holes. Something to think over. (maybe metal tape might just work, but I'm little concerned about the adhesive. Foil could work to fill the gap, but durability is an issue as well.)

d0027587_4a0903d56d45f.jpg

So this is how I decided to protect the large opening. Simple. Just a cap from an empty juice sampler. (Thanx, Steve! :D Also, MVS uses the same cap too... and I"m pretty sure other vendors might be using the same cap.)

d0027587_4a0903db74bc0.jpg

But it's also relatively loose fit - so this is what I'd be using. A pencil case that I bought from Japanese store near new NY times building on 41st and 8th (I think) Ave. Cost me a few bucks, but makes a nice case. :)

d0027587_4a0903b5c7c8f.jpg

And I used the foam from the original packaging. I wish it was thicker so that I could put a 6ml bottle, and perhaps room for another atty, but this keeps my batts and stuff in place. :)

Hope you enjoyed my silly mod. But it does work quite well, and it instantly took over as my #1 choice of e-cig at home. Also, thanks to the larger hole, it's easier to drip while taking a walk - so a small bottle in your pocket, you'll just do fine on the go, w/o making a mess (I don't recommend dripping while driving though!)

PS. Don't stick your tongue in it while it's hot. LOL.
PPS. Excuse my poor engrish... (not a native speaker, but I am trying..)

Sorry, this doesn't hold 'any' juice at all! it's actually strictly for dripping. ;)
But I also wouldn't mind having larger diameter, more powerful battery/longer life, and more room for juice either. Kinda semi in between cigar and cigarette. :D

Come to think of it, you can probably cut off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch off from both atty and cartridge and make shorter 801. It would hold at least a few more drops of juice than regular 901. Thing is finding the right way to keep the mouthpiece stay put nice and easy. :)

I think it is so simple, that is just Great!

I was thinking of how to get a warmer vapor from my M201, and you just gave me the solution!

Thank you!

You are quite welcome. :)
You can do it without cutting off the atomizer - you'll still get warm vapor. It's the extra distance the vapor has to travel from atomizer, through the cool champer (where cold liquid is constantly cooling), it loses the warmth.
I'm not sure of M201 atomizer - maybe it's easier to drip than my 801.

First you'll notice the metal will be little cold to touch with your lips, but it becomes nice and warm (not too hot with conventional batts/pass-throughs) in few sec. Haven't burnt my lips yet, when I was vaping this with USB pass-through last night.

Reason for the cutting is that I just find the pen-style atomizers are rather hard to drip w/o worry of flooding. :) I recommend if you don't mind dripping, it's a worthwhile try if you have some extra pen-style attys around. I dedicated this one (out of 6 I have) for dripping only. :)

Yes, The M201 is a pen-stile ecig. So, your mod will work just fine. I love dripping.

After cutting it down, can you still fit a mouthpiece on it (with the cartridge removed)? I ask this because all of our 801 attys that we got from bestecig have a bridge that is too low and our carts are wicking to the atty and we are having bad luck. Even with dripping they aren't wicking well, and this probably is because of the distance of dripping into the dark tube, we probably are not dripping in the best manner. So, I was thinking, if we cut down the tube maybe the cart would touch. It's almost 1/2 inch off! CRAZY!

OK, in case we do this and we decide to drip them, where is the right spot to drip? Right onto the bridge? or past the bridge straight to the coil? Thanks in advance. I love your idea...

Yes, you can fit mouthpiece, with little size adjustment... but you have to tinker the diameter around the mouthpiece and make it airtight.

I've been thinking all day, what might be the best way to keep the mouth piece on it nice and easy... as the cut edge tends to eat away the plastic off the mouth piece, creating little plastic pieces. It probably won't melt, but I just don't like the idea of vaping black plastic pieces into my lung! ;) Also, my cutting was pretty bad and not perfectly round - so it was not totally airtight. (which means, less vapor production.) That's why I'm just going for straight-ups like a man! (LOL).

I'm trying to figure out a way to fit it in w/o aggrevating the mouthpiece.... I think I have a little idea, which I'll be playing with tonight. ;) I"ll update with any progress.

So anyhow, right spot to drip is right onto the bridge. Not the coil 801's bridge is HUGE compared to the all the minis, so it will hold plenty liquid. I usually drip 3-4 drops, depending on how dry the atomizer is. On Minis, I just apply 1-2 drops.

So, after vaping with saw-off DSE 801 for whole day, I've come to conclusion that this does need a mouth piece for 2 reasons.

1. While not excessively nor unbearably hot, atomizer is warm.
2. A couple of occasions, I was left with some noticeable juice on my lips - making a little bit of tingling sensation on my lips. warm, metal atomizer with nic effect was somewhat strange - it felt a little numb after a whole day of vaping straight up.

so I decided to make a custom mouthpiece using what I have at home... some craft materials. (My hobby & my wife's stuff)

d0027587_4a0a4c2841c95.jpg

Using a small razor saw, I cut off the connection part of conventional 801 mouth piece. Reason being is, that while I could put it in, it wasn't perfectly air-tight. I could easily apply a piece of masking tape around it or what not to make air-tight... but I wanted stay away from as much adhesive as possible.

d0027587_4a0a4c2db14f1.jpg

After that, I cut off both ends of the e-juice bottle cap, leaving maybe a quarter inch left on both ends.
d0027587_4a0a4c3385612.jpg

Then I inserted a small piece of aluminum pipe that my wife had for one of her projects. You can even cut this with a knife. Very easy to bend, etc. I pushed in as much as possible to the 801 mouth piece. I did apply very small amount of superglue, just on the outer surface of the end of the pipe, where it's being inserted to make it sturdy.

d0027587_4a0a4c385eda3.jpg

and I rolled up some aluminum foil, and wrapped around the pipe.

d0027587_4a0a4c3dcd786.jpg

Then gently screwed into the bottle cap. The cap is rather flexible like rubber, so with added thickness, I was able to make it fit very tightly, without any use of glue.

d0027587_4a0a4c41891e4.jpg

After cutting the excess pipe/foil from atty side... Using a long nose plier (or screwdriver or what not) - I made the hole even larger - for better intake, and even more friction to make it stable/airtight.

d0027587_4a0a4c470990b.jpg

When successfully done, you can see through the other end... like this.

d0027587_4a0a4c4c8a636.jpg

Then I polished off the rough edges on the cut surface with jewelry pile. Washed throughly, using a used toot-brush to take off any metal particles, etc... and you are done!

d0027587_4a0a4c5430a1e.jpg

And the final result. It's about half inch shorter than regular 801. Little bit longer than 901.

And after testing for a while, here's my conclusion:

1. it's pretty air tight. Draw is easy, plenty of taste, but not as warm vapor... maybe tubing is cooling down the vapor?

2. It's not as strong as original piece - so you can't just bite down the mouth piece with hands free. You have to hold the body, in order to vape. It falls off easily. (BAD)

3. I did still get occasional burst of e-juice once in a while... especially when the wick is very wet... but no more tingling lips from nic juice on my lips. (Good)

Comparison with regular 801 atomizer with unmodified mouth piece...

Saw-off Atty straight-up:
Vapor warmth - Very good
Taste - Very good
Draw - Very good (almost like a real cigar),
Ease of dripping - Very good
Juice leak - not good

Saw-off w/ custom MP:
Vapor warmth - good
Taste - good
Draw - acceptable
Ease of dripping - very good
Juice leak - good

Unmodified Atty, straight up:
Vapor warmth - good
Taste - good
Draw - very good
Ease of Dripping - very bad
Juice leak - acceptable

Unmotified Atty + conventional mouth piece:
Vapor warmth - good
Taste - good
Draw - good
Ease of Dripping - very bad
Juice leak - good

Unmodified Atty + cartridge
Vapor warmth - bad
Taste - acceptable
Draw - acceptable
Ease of Dripping - very bad
Juice Leak - acceptable

So in my opinion, saw-off straight-up gave me the most satisfaction, followed by unmotified Atty straight up. Custom MP, does its job, but not as well as I hope it would do. Weak connection and not as air-tight as I hoped it would be due to the shallow connection. Perhaps, I'll end up just taping around the conventional one and see if it works better. (and inhale adhesive from the tape. :() Maybe it's a lost cause trying to come up with a mouth piece - as straight-up inhaling is the most satisfying experience - except the aftermass.

But at least I gave a shot, and gave a new life to my 801, and one atomizer which had so much trouble with, because of some manufacturing error. (opening was too small for the cartridge, so I had very hard time putting in any carts on this one.) All and all, 801 was slowly taking a back seat.. now became my #1... till SD, I guess. ;)

Thanks all for reading my update.

Wow, you use to post very detailed procedures! You must be a teacher or something like that! ;) Great explanations!

Tomorrow I will try to fix the original MP of my M201 after I cut a part of the atty tube. We have a machine to reduce tube's ends. So I may be able to reduce the atty tube again to the proper size of the MP. I will let you know how it goes.

Good for you! ;) I wish I had a proper tool. I'd love to hear about how it went. Just be careful not to damage the actual wick though, but I"m sure you are on top of it! :)

Anyhow, for S**ts and giggles, I just wrapped around the atomizer with a piece of masking tape, and it did improve the air-tightness of the modified MP, and it's working quite well now - even strong enough to just hold it in my mouth, and doesn't fall off like it used to.

Here's the picture - didn't have a camera, so I scanned it from my workstation. I think I might be the first one who actually "scanned" his/her e-cig. ;)

d0027587_4a0adcdaea113.jpg

Saw-off w/ custom MP:
Vapor warmth - good
Taste - good
Draw - good (much better with taping around - almost as good as normal MP)
Ease of dripping - very good
Juice leak - good.

Also, it's not burning as hot as I feared, so I'm not getting any funny taste from the tape's adhesive - so I'm thinking about getting some metal tape, and wrap around for longevity. (As I do boil atomizers once a week.)

And just to clarify.. that the grades here are "relative" compared to the original performance.. so I'm changing the wording.

I wonder if some appropriate sized poly tubing (I'm thinking the clear plastic stuff I have seen at the hardware store) could be fit to push over the outside of the cut off atty, and used as a mouthpiece. It would still be wide open to provide an easy draw, easily removable to drip, and would move your lips further from the liquid to avoid the nasty taste of sucking unvaporized liquid. I don't think the atty tube gets warm enough to melt it or create any type of a chemical reaction (the atty does get warm, but not enough to burn my lips, after all), so I don't think the material of the tubing would be a problem. Haven't tried it yet, but I will later in the week, and will report back what I find.

Great discovery,

This seems like a dead thread, but I thought I would post a related find. I used the pipe-cutter to shorten a BE112 (801) atty, and simply used a tube cut from a cart sleeve to mate the mouthpiece with the widened atty opening. Works great, and I can either vape from the plastic tube, or slip in the mouthpiece if I accidentally over-drip the atty (to avoid juice splatter in my mouth).

Enjoy,

Q4mK
