Hello,

I am 29, live in southern CA, I do not smoke cigs. I am a MMJ (prop 215, SB420 compliant) patient. I use the Iolite (google IOLITE i cant post links yet) for vaping my product. They claim you can use this device for e-cig liquid but I am not sure.

I am looking to help my father get off combustion, but I am overwhelmed by the amount of information out there about this scene. He currently smokes 25 Capri 120's per day, he is 60 years old and has been a daily smoker most of his adult life. If anyone can help steer me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Why not get your dad a dispobale PV - so its not a money sink, and he can give it a test drive? They usually go fro around $10 or so - actually let me see if I can link one for you 510 Regular Flavor - some there - and also if you want a local guy then Tasty Vapor has some on his parts section (wait getting alink..lol) Tasty Vapor E-Cigs & Parts that you can make up a decent cheapo one. The one just linked doesnt come with prefiled carts so yuou'd have to buy juice (he sells that).
Might be a good idea for a try out at least.

Totally with you on that one. It's medicine and should be treated as such.

I have to say though, after trying out my first e-cig (Joye 510 from Happy Vaper), there is nothing like an e-cig when it comes to kicking cigarette combustion. I found the iolite great for weed, but with nicotine it was just too much of a hassle. Too small a bowl, excess vaped tobacco at the end, etc. I didn't ever try throwing in liquid, but I don't know how effective that would be...

Plus, your dad will probably enjoy having something that is relatively the same weight/size of a cig depending on his preferences...

I wish you lots of luck! I still feel like there is tons to learn, but once I got my 510 I made instant buddies with it. I'm sure it will tell me all I need to know as I keep learning all about the various reasons, methods and experiences of vaping.

Thanks for the awesome info. Ive had a day or two to lurk here, I'm thinking the 510 for him if he ends up liking it. your links will certainly help cut the cost of getting him to try it.

@Fawsune

Im in LOVE with my Iolite man, I work in a head shop and try and tell everyone that comes in about them. If you use Colibri or Vector butane you never have issues with them. Cleared up my cough in like 3 weeks, cut my consumption down by 30-40%

510 Cartomizer Starter Kit
I suggest this because three piece units can put many people off vaping due to all the "messing around with it" you have to do and the two piece e-cig is just easier for someone new to deal with. You can always pick up atomizers and cartridges later to try out. :)

Just an Update for you guys. My dad got his disposable 510 kit from madvapes last night, he tried it this morning when he woke up. this is the first time in over 30 years that he has gone more than 2 hours without an analog. he says it is not as enjoyable as a cig for him, feels more like "I'm using an inhaler for asthma" (he is 60 years old, born in Ukraine). With that said, he is willing to stick with it. He does seem more grumpy today. He would have already been through half a pack by the time this posts.

There's a learning curve, and many need to tweak what nicotine level they use.

I was a pack a day Marlboro regulars smoker, needed something with 24 mg/ml nicotine.

The draw on an e-cig should be long, slow -- 5 or 6 seconds -- not short puffs like a cigarette often is smoked.

The nicotine intake is through mucus membranes, purportedly -- mouth and nasal passages, not the lungs.

Drink extra fluids, particularly early one. e-cigs tend to dry one out a bit. Water becomes a habit quickly.

There's a lot of flavors, tobacco as well as others. For me, when I want something like a real cigarette I seek something with a Turkish flavor, like V4L's Kamel.

If something that's a cigarette form factor is important, and convenience is big, you might want to look at a KR808D-1 model. vapor4life (their VaporKing) and many other forum suppliers sell them. They're two-piece, I've been happy with mine.

Good luck to your dad.

+1 on the recommendation of the KR8, that's what I started with too. For a taste as close as possible to the "real deal," I would now have to recommend V4L's Parliament flavor. They sent me a sample in 18mg with my carto order, and I would have really liked this when I was starting out. Now, it just tastes too much like a burning analog for me to really appreciate. Free swag with an order is always good, though, and I'm kind of glad I found it to recommend even if tobacco flavors are no longer my cup of tea.

Thanks for the info and the feedback. I've read a bunch about automatic vs manual batteries, what do you recommend for the V4L KR808D-1? Also some people say vapor production is better from the 510 and they make 510s in a 2 piece right? im such a noob still :)

Yes, you can get 510 cartomizers, which will make the 510 a two-piece model. I haven't used a 510, but last night I saw that madvapes.com has 510 cartomizer starter kits on sale right now. Looked like a pretty good deal, I almost broke down and bought one to try out.

With a KR8, from V4L or anywhere else, I would recommend the starter kit with two batteries & charger, no less than 10 cartomizers, and a selection of different liquids (small bottles) in multiple flavors and strengths. If you're going to be out and about while using it, I would recommend adding either XL batteries or a PCC, which is a little case that will charge the batteries as they are stored in it.

For general moving around I use the auto battery -- nothing to push.
At my computer I use a manual PT (passthrough, something powered right off of a USB port -- V4L's PT has a decent length cord) -- I don't mind the button then, and you get really good vapor.
Not sure what I'll do for my car -- I'm using the regular batteries, probably going to get another PT from V4L, w/car adapter, for really long drives. That PT will likely be an auto -- I like to concentrate on driving, not fumble for a button.

PCCs are indeed useful, if youu're away from power all day. An XL battery is also good (mine's on loan right now).

An ultimate starter kit gets two normal batteries, a PCC, 5 pack of cartos (you pick the flavor and strength); a standard kit will normally get you a regular (non-charging) case instead of the PCC. I definitely agree with the idea of picking up a couple 5 packs of prefilled cartos or some blanks with separate liquid.

V4L always has a 10% off code (smilin), and often has 20% off special codes. NHaler (another forum Supplier) uses saveinnj for 10% off.

Update!

My dad has been analog free for 4 days 20 some odd hours, he is getting his Vapor King from V4L today in the mail (do they come charged?) the disposable is on its last legs and he is down to the bottom of the last cart that came with it!

Thanks for all the advice and support, this is a great community.

According to my dads banner he has avoided 120 analogs and will break even in 21 days. Once he is used to the process im going to slowly try and teach him all the advanced stuff ive been reading about on here (re-filling, drippin, PVs). how long do you guys think i should wait before scaling back the mgs on his carts? the disposables came with 24mg marboro and he hated the flavor, we ordered him a tobacco sampler 5 pack at 36mg (along with the 5 that come with it at 36mg) is it hard to tone down once you are used to it?

For some people it is hard and for some people it isn't.
But you should probably wait until he is comfortable using it, or feels like cutting back.

He'll know if he's getting too much nicotine.
Headache, nausea, hiccups maybe.

There's no rush.
