I personally wouldn't let an auto shut-off feature be a deal breaker. The only time this is a concern is if a DIYer is interrupted in the middle of a pour. Because we tare (zero out) our scale's reading between ingredients, having a scale shut down between ingredients, is not a big deal. You are going to want to return it to zero before adding the next ingredient anyway. Just don't let yourself be distracted during the addition of any single ingredient. :)

ETA: Though my scale has automatic shutoff; I've never had it go off at any point during a mixing session.

There are two scales mentioned early on in the "Mixing by Weight" thread. I don't remember what they're called but there's "the one from eBay" and "the one from Amazon." I have the eBay one (seller: anyvolume) and it doesn't have an auto-shutoff (I've left it for upwards of 30 minutes and it was still on, on battery power.) It does have the auto-zeroing "feature (not a bug)" that can miss drops after a tare, if you add them one at a time. This is annoying but not disastrously so, you just have to be aware of it and not let it settle between individual drops until a weight other than 0.00 is registered. If you need to add by just a few drops, but just counting them isn't good enough (e.g. you need .05% of something and don't know if that's 2 drops or 3), then put a bottle cap or something to tip the scale off 0.00 and then subtract the difference.

I use the wall wart power supply with my American Weight Scales LB-501 so that I don't have to depend on batteries during a session. Timeout doesn't happen with ac power.

As IDJoel said, you probably won't have a problem if you have your recipe in front of you along with all the ingredients to make each pour in succession. You will tare to zero after each ingredient. You just have to remember what you poured last and continue on with the next if it times out.

Let your answering machine/cell phone handle the phone calls. They'll wait until you finish the current bottle.

lb-501 as mentioned has a cord. i have a cheap $10 or $12 battery powered scale from amazon, that required an extra 500g calibration weight purchase, and it has a 3 minute auto off... 2 years of DIY and it has never once shut off on me. I just make sure I have all my ingredients out and ready to go then tare between each ingredient. I usually mix 3 or 4 x 100ml bottles in one session without shutting it off, still on the same batteries it came with even.

I know most folks probably won't run into this problem but as I will probably be using whatever scale I get with battery power I'm a little concerned with the auto shut-off feature .
Is there a good scale without this Auto shut-off feature that you know of ?

I have this one... 500g x 0.01g High Precision Digital Scale SF-400D2 Counting w/ USB Wall Adapter. It registers pretty fast & easy to be accurate. It has a large read out & does not auto shut off in battery mode. Note: It does not come with calibration weights.

I am rather doubtful that you will run into the auto shutoff feature, not if you have everything you need right in front of you, unless you run into a major distraction, well in which case maybe just on a scrap of paper writing down where you are in the "mix" so once you power it back on you can tare back to 0 and just continue on. It should only take a second.
