i followed the ejuice recipe measurements to a T but all 3 batches seem to be a lot harsher when compared to over the counter juices (same nic 6mg, same vg pg ratio 50/50 and 40/60).

Is it just how it is with DIY juices?
Not always. Depends on your base, the nicotine used, but mostly how long you let it rest (steep) before vaping. Fruit/candy flavors should steep for at least a week (some a few days), tobacco flavours at least 3 to 4 weeks.

When i immediately try to vape a new juice it looks like chewing cardboard or old newspapers (newer papers don't taste good either btw). After 3 to 4 weeks it starts to become vapeable, the taste changes in time, probably due to oxydation, fermentation etc... so give it some time.

I'm not sure what brand of nicotine only know it's 36mg per ml concentration.

Flavor I've only messed around with TFA/TPA. altogether at 10%.

I'm going to try to let it steep. Can I just kettle the glass bottle sit there for a week or so? Or do I need to do the warm water thing?

At this rate I'm going to experience with higher VG batches to see if it helps.

My suspicion is with the alcohol content in the flavoring. What do I do to remove this? Let it sit open?

Shake, uncap and let it breath for a 4-5 hours, cap it and let it sit for a week. Heat isn't necessary. If that doesn't work, I would try mixing a batch without nic, if it isn't harsh, your nic is probably to blame.

I've had great experiences with Nude Nic. I've had bad experiences with MFS and Wizard Labs nic. It either arrived and had already started to oxodize, or it was extremely harsh and peppery, even at 1.5 and 3mg strengths.

You would want to mix and vape just the base. That will tell you right there. If it's the base then you can either lower the NIC concentration or find a smoother NIC.

Also don't rule out the individual base components (VG or PG) Some have reported harshness from those as well so it would also benefit to vape each of those separetly to rule that out as well.

If the base is OK then the only thing left is the flavoring.

@rice721 - I have a problem with the Ethyl Alcohol in some flavorings that I really like, causing a "bitey" sensation when I try vaping a new recipe right away. It also gives me a slight headache. I still use those flavorings though!

I just make the recipe, cap it, and shake the heck out of it causing many bubbles. Then uncap it and let it sit for 4-5 hours to evaporate some of the EA out of it. I recap it and do it again...same thing. I do this for 2-3 days, and am absolutely amazed at the difference it makes!

For example: I made Bill's Lemon Meringue Pie recipe. The Lemon in it almost "put hair on my chest" when I first tried it! (Not a good thing since I'm a female!) It was SO bitey to me! 3 days of letting the EA evaporate, by doing the above...and it's my favorite ADV now. I just can't stop vaping it!

Mine isn't harsher. I shot for what I was getting in the way of a Turkish tobacco flavor from a local B&M where I got treated badly and sold junk juice by a guy there who hated me for reasons of his own. I surpassed their juice and came up with something I've been vaping ADV since. I've not been back to a B&M since. I've no use for them. Nor have I any use for this "support your local business" sentiment, because your local business is not always friendly to you. There can be some real jerks there. In my experience there were. I'm done with them.

When I stopped using commercial eliquid I was cutting it 25/75 and it tasted fine. My home brew is 39% VG, 49% PG, 1% nic (10mg) and 1% flavoring and it tastes fine too. I think what spoils most eliquid, commercial and home made, is too much flavoring. Now when I try to vape commercial e liquid it is too strong, overpowering.

Its a WTF OMG clone, 60% VG 40% PG. Nicotine is 36mg/ml and I do a 6mg strength batch. Flavoring are all from TFA/TPA and includes Sour, Strawberry Ripe, Kiwi.

So after my dilemma I decided that maybe I should steep my juices, I let it sit open with cap off overnight, shake it as often as I can. It helped with the harshness but now I'm finding that the juice tends to get ALOT thicker when I'm almost done with a tank. Is this normal? Is my VG separating with my other ingredients?

I'm vaping my juices in a Griffin 22mm RTA, build is dual clapton 32/26, 3mm IAD, 6-7 wraps at 0.43ohms. Vaping it around 40-42W

What do you mean exactly by "it gets thicker"? I've never seen VG separate from other ingredients once it's been shaken.

Once the level of liquid in a Griffin is down below the "build deck cylinder", it might appear to be thicker simply because there's very little space for it to flow freely. I can turn mine completely upside down and the juice just stays trapped between the cylinder and glass until I turn it on its side, and even then it flows very slowly, due to vacuum in the tank.

Only other thing I can think of is that maybe you're using flavors with a lot of ethyl. Leaving the cap off overnight is allowing it to evaporate off, leaving you with a slightly thicker liquid.

Could be that the griffin's deck cover is thicker and not allowing the juice to move freely. I'm going to try the batch in a different tank.
