THE 7% SOLUTION
Fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the world’s first and most famous consulting detective Sherlock Holmes are no doubt familiar with the sleuth’s habit to take C.....e in a 7% solution during times when he is vexed, mostly due to lack of mental stimulus. The new PBS series “SHERLOCK” is a modern updated version of our inquisitive hero, and of course has taken liberties with some of the well-known background information. The “Baker St. Irregulars” have become a homeless network, and Sherlock is no newbie to the internet, GPS, cell phones, and other modern devices. However his C.....e addiction has been substituted with a nicotine addiction. He wears patches, and is still susceptible to the pain of nicotine withdrawal. Is this just PBS being politically correct? Are we being spared the more dramatic consequences of illegal substance abuse?
One has to wonder how the writers will respond with the new technology of electronic cigarettes. Surely the new, modern Sherlock is well aware of the new nicotine delivery system being vaped these days? With the normal range of nicotine being between 6-24 mg., (like average tobacco cigarettes), is it a hard stretch to see a 7% solution coming? Interesting…….

Not to quibble, but in the modern version he's portrayed as a recovering drug addict actually (not as evident in the the "Sherlock" version as in the "Elementary" version but still it has been mentioned in at least 1 episode of Sherlock). So the "C" is not substituted for nicotine in the writing. It's substituted for the "c" in actuality by his character so he will not relapse.

I also thought it interesting that they chose to use nicotine as a tool for him though.
