None of my cats over years tore up their kills either. Sometimes you can't even see the wound. Are you sure that was cats that did that? My at Joe was a hunter when younger but he just found them and carried them to me to show off. Also my girl Julie is a hunter but mostly birds.
Minks and ferrets yes. Could be but my old cat used to kill wild rabbits and torture them in the backyard and my mom would phone me crying. Let it get up off the ground then some pounce again just having fun with it until it died she never ate anything just left it’s body. Could be any animal that did it I don’t know for sure but I know my neighbors cat still tried to stalk my bunnies sometimesDo you have minks or wild ferrets @Ricky Vapes ? Any animal in that family will tear up its prey and ofter doesn't even eat it.
I'm sorry this happened but in his last days he found an angel to care for him. You gave him more than most wild rabbits ever get. He died being loved. Can't do much better than that.
It does sound more like the works of a dog or even a coyote, maybe the rabbit was in a way that either the dog or coyote could only get to parts of it (the ears) and therefore never killed poor Rocky but maimed him pretty good.I wonder if a dog was the culprit.
both of my cats wear collars with bells for this reason. They are well feed and do not need to kill a bird. I do not hold any animal responsible for killing because it needs to eat, not even a coyote. It is up to us to help along when we can. Cats usually will just "play' with a capture. It is not malicious.Broken hearted to hear about Rocky, and for you and Rocky. So grateful you were able to take him in, give him a safe place, love, security and all the bananas (among other goodies) he could eat before his passing.
I'm not fond of cats outside either. Ours wore a small (not obnoxious) bell when she went out so she couldn't kill anything and yes, she was a rescue. From Nature.com:
We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0 billion birds and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals annually, and that un-owned cats cause the majority of this mortality.
That's inexcusable. I don't blame it on the cats, I blame it solely on humans. Australia was trying to get rid of feral cats and ban pet cats from going outside, that's how bad the problem is.It's not okay for peoples' pets to kill billions of animals. No disrespect intended to cat owners and/or rescuers. We chose wildlife over our own cat's "pet projects" and while annoyed at first, still had a good time roaming outdoors.
he had more wounds on his back and his legs were all crippled up tooIt does sound more like the works of a dog or even a coyote, maybe the rabbit was in a way that either the dog or coyote could only get to parts of it (the ears) and therefore never killed poor Rocky but maimed him pretty good.
Talked to the lady who I gave the little bunny to last weekend and she named him sparkles. Because he’s brought a sparkle to her life again . She has a harness for him and a bed he sleeps in inside with her while she watches TV. She doesn’t leave him alone ever and takes him everywhere with her in a carrier. Said she snuggles him and pets him all the time too while watching TV . Sounds like he just lives inside with her and is adjusting well.
Rescue work is full of heartache, when you see the suffering. I see it more from the hands of humans. You see it more from the hands of the wild. All the bunnies in your area are so lucky to have you. One day you will be known as the bunny rehabilitator.he had more wounds on his back and his legs were all crippled up too
I probably would have kept him forever because he probably would have Had troubles with his leg. He also could have got sick from something toxic before being attacked making him an easy target.
I was excited about bringing him home and spoiling him even though it meant more work.
But at least he isn’t suffering.
