I dont work for USPS but deliver for a major delivery service in the US so I have an understanding of the postal services. Also had the same experience as you before.

Give a call or go down to your local post office with the tracking number tomorrow. If the customer counter people are rude at your place like mine are, demand to see the postmaster or general manager. Could be that the drivers had misloaded the package into the wrong car and might reattempt tomorrow since it is after hours now. Any who, in that situation, it should have been sheeted for reattempt the tracking info. But sometimes the postman wont do it, whatever his/ her reason is. Many variables here. But do give them a ring tomorrow. Hope your item turn up soon.
