I'm revisiting this to give an update: Shipping to APOs is fantastic!
I got my Darwin package 6 days after Drew shipped it. Turns out that Drew is shipping it from really close to an APO mail entry point which trims off about a day versus other vendors.
Of course, once it gets into the APO system there really is no way to track it - online or otherwise - until it reaches its final destination.
Also, certain environmental and societal considerations have to be taken into account as well. During local national holidays in a foreign country with an APO user mail could take longer.
This is really big in the Middle East due to Ramadan and Eid holiday periods which last a month-plus. During those times expect APO mail delivery to be slow at best, non-existant and very delayed at worst.
Or in the case of Germany, there are laws on the books in Germany forbidding trucks from driving on the autobahns on Sundays - that's why park platzes in Deutschland are full o' trucks by midnight on Saturday night.
Or say there's someone working at the basecamp at the South Pole (which has an APO by the way...it's hidden). Mail delivery there during the summer takes a week AFTER it hits the resupply port. During the winter over period - no mail at all for 6 months. And internet only for a few hours each day unless there's a storm in which case there is no internet.
Almost all APOs take Sunday off, no APO mail delivery on Sunday.
Bottom-line: If it can be mailed
through the regular USPS system then it can be mailed to an APO - within reason of course.
No illegal drugs, weapons, explosive materials, banned-in-country substances, i.e. alcohol in the Middle East, etc.
