i have read a lot of forums stating that phlegm production and shortness of breath from vaping is probably down to giving up smoking.

i cannot post on the usual forums as am a new member, but really wanted to make the following point.

my brother who is a heavy smoker started to vape, and even though i was a non smoker, i was taken in with the idea, particularly as i thought it was safe, and took up vaping for pure enjoyment.

however, i am 4 weeks in and have a definite shortening of breath, and a clear to creamy type mucus at back of throat and constsant swallowing, especially at night.

shortness of breath is evident, and because of this , i am going to cut down on vaping and give up over the next couple of weeks.

VG PG makes little difference as far as im concerned.

I am regretful but have no doubt that vaping has inherrant dangers, and whilst it may not be as visious as smoking, i would suggest that it isnt at all safe.

I would welcome feedback on this, and if you have just spent £$200 on a personal VP gadget and feel a bit defensive to keep an open mind and be assured that I really wish this wasnt the case, but there is a definite shortness of breath and phlegm production that is a result of vaping, and NOT giving up smoking. Though gving up smoking is thwart with problems, as a non smoker I can safely say that vaping has its own problems also.

It's nicotine bro not to mention pg ejuices will dry out your throat and nasal passages. For me an X-smoker the shortness of breath was already present but it has gotten easier to breath since I began vaping, not to mention the since of smell and taste I got back a few weeks after starting :). My friend did the same thing, night after night we play videos games online and in video chat he sees me vaping away so he asked to what i thought of it and if i thought he should try it. He quit smoking cold turkey over a year ago so i discouraged him from trying it but he insisted so I sent him to walgreens for a blu disposable which he vaped away and enjoyed and didnt go out for another, I guess is a lot of people will be curious about vaping especially smokers and x-smokers. It is still nicotine though so if your not addicted I'd stay clear of it.

That is interesting. I hope you were using non nicotine juice, would hate to hear you got addicted. I have no doubt this is better for ME than smoking. I just went or a run and I can tell my lung capacity is already vastly improved...having said that, I think inhaling nothing but air would be optimal. Did u have any issues before? Asthma? Allergies?

Thanks for sharing your story, although I think most of us are aware we are guinea pigs in this grand experiment. Some will have problems, some will not. It's very individual.

Hope it all works out for you, and u go back to your normal healthy state soon.

If a person has smoked for a sufficiently long time, some of the effects just aren't ever going to go away. This is especially true for those who smoked long enough for COPD to set in.

I think most of us acknowledge that vaping is not 100% hazard-free. But we recognize that continuing to smoke is 100% hazardous. It's a trade-off, and it's a good one.

I would say that since you weren't a smoker, your lungs aren't used to inhaling foreign substances and they are going to argue without about it. I would suspect that you would have similar issues if you'd have taken up smoking.

That being said, I feel like that in the mornings after vaping heavily and not drinking enough water. Dehydration can do some weird things to your body. PG and VG will both dry out out and you must increase your water intake exponentially to compensate for that.

Certain liquid flavors are known to irritate some users lungs .. cinammon / etc ..

Definitely. Cinnamon for me........ I can eat it but I can't vape it. My chest gets tight and I get croup-y. No problems with any other flavors yet.

Jamie, I wonder if you have been using the same flavor or brand of juice all along. If so, there might be another ingredient issue there. Also, there are definitely individuals with sensitivities to PG or VG, although rare.

I was a 40+ year 1 1/2 pad smoker, my husband even longer @ at least 2 pad. For us this is a wonderful item. We realize that there may be things along this journey that may not be best for us but we know for sure what the cigarettes were doing to us. It is a choice we are happy we made.

On a personal note. Husband can now put on his 40 lb backpack, go for his walks and is no longer short of breath. Before this journey he took the same walks but was very short of breath after just a very short walk. We are all going to die eventually of something. We choose to live healthier during the time we have left. Thank you for your concern and I do hope your brother is making the switch without any problems. Please give him all the support you can instead of trying to convince him that his vaping is bad for him. We all know that smoking is.

I vape instead of smoking for the same reason that I drive a Tahoe instead of a Yugo... safer with less hazards and headaches!

some juices are worse than others, cloud 9 vanilla pg i had problems with, though i hear the butter flavour can cause problems, i have been better with butterscoth from another brand which is a pg / vg mix..but i dont think this is down to pg - vg, as the problems are continuous with all liquids, flavour may be an added factor..

it would be hasty for me to say that vaping is better than smoking, though if i had to bet on it , i would agree that it is better, and this thread isnt intended to put people off the path of analog cassation. vaping is enjoyable, my brother and i loved to vape, thought it was heaven sent, but the problems are hilighted in other threads in more depth, and there are a worrying amount of people experiencing shortness of breath and increased phlegm production. shortness of breath is a serious issue, and whilst your husband deserves credit, he should have all the info at hand that is available to him. people has quit vaping because of shortness of breath, and the damage has been seen as irreparable in some cases. i know once the damage is done with empasema or copd [same thing ?], it is irreversable also, and because it has been suggested this is not a temporary ailment, associated with say alcohol, energy drinks, herbal supplements, creatine etc, seemingly more acute, this warrants the thread, in spite of my predelection [spelling, sorry!], for vaping...

If I had to bet, I would bet that vaping may not be the right option for you to choose for yourself.

Best wishes!

There's no doubt it it affected you negatively, if it contained nicotine. Nicotine's effects are well-known. Inhaling PG vapor is fairly well-studied. I'm not aware of any studies on VG vapor or food flavoring vapor. It's a gamble I'm willing to take, as a smoker.

I would never suggest that any non-smoker take up e-cigs, and most of this community would say the same. That's also the official stance of the forum. It will certainly adversely affect a non-smoker. Smokers are hoping that it is safer than cigarettes, and real-life observations seem to indicate that it is less damaging.

I've seen a fair bit of people vaping what I consider to be inadvisable amounts and strengths of e-liquid. I also am frustrated by completely unnecessary ingredients that seem to be added to many flavorings and e-liquids, like food coloring.

I assume that such things will improve with time, after some real studies have been analyzed.
