So, before hand I was just using organic cotton, well I wanted to try out silica and bought it in the 3mm size. I also bought 32g Kanthal wire with it. Now thinking about it, I didn't research if these two would work together, or be good together. So I suppose that is what i'm asking. Can I still make coils with these? Will there be any problems? Will it taste bad or anything? Please help.

hey frogzx, I use 32g with cotton or silica for my at home drippers and the wifes adv. Kanthal will work with all the different wicking materials, just depends on what your build is going to be that determines what gauge you will need. 28g seems to be the most popular size but I generally stick with my 32g maybe my next order i will go to 30 or 28

Just wanted higher resistance since I'm just getting into coil building. I'm going to be building duals mainly.

It will work fine, you'll just have to play with wraps. If I were doing dual coils, I'd probably just do micro coils with cotton, but you should be able to get a good result.

How many wraps do you think I should do on it? And do I have to do micros? Or would I be fine with basic coils? I'm taking everything step by step, and would like to master basic coils before I move on to anything else. Just so I don't blow myself up going too fast with it.

How many wraps you do should depend on what resistance you want the coil to be since you're using a mechanical mod and can't change its power output. With a 3mm wick, you will not be able to get too many on there. As you know, the longer the wire the higher the resistance.

I like micro coils in my Trident. You do not have to use them though. You should be able to get decent performance with regular coils, but IMO you will need to go a bit lower in resistance to get it. And you can't go too low with 32 gauge wire or you'll get burnt hits.

So, what resistance are you planning to build to? Also, are you aware of the safety issues when using a mech mod and how to handle these safely?

I am, I have an Ohmmeter and have building down, other than a few little details that I still need to get down. Any safety advice would be appreciated. I would like to stay around 1.5 ohms, give or take, until I learn more about Sub-Ohm vaping.

Personally I don't like 32 awg very much, to thin and springy to work with and to high of a resistance for most of my builds. But we all discover what we like best by trying. I use 28 awg, works great for my builds from .5-2 ohms on my various rba's.

I quickly went from hand wrapping coils to micro builds, mainly because they are just so much more consistent and easy to make. Also easy to calculate for a different ohm target for a specific build.

You don't have to do micro builds, but once you do try them you'll probably never go back to traditional wrapping.

The number of wraps is going to depend on what diameter you are wrapping your coils to.

By no means do you have to go with micro coils. I only suggested that because, to me, they are sooo much easier to get right and looking nice than trying to hand wrap kanthal over a doubled up wad of 3mm silica, plus you are working with less real estate since two of them will be sitting on the deck of your rda.

With micro coils you don't have to worry about having evenly spaced coils, they are supposed to touch, you just have to make sure they aren't overlapping.

Let me reiterate, this is just my preference, I am sure there are several people out there that love traditional dual coil builds. Just go with what ever you want hell try both. There's no wrong choice here.

I have been using micro coils since I first tried them a few months back. The flavor is great and the vapor production is always good and consistent. Watch a few YouTube videos and practice and you'll be building micro coils to perfection in no time. If you can fit a fuse in your mechanical mod, I would recommend it for safety until you can build them to perfection.
