Dunno if anyone can advise on this or not...

Every time I enter the forum for the first time WinXP gives me a dialog box that says there's a slow script running and if I allow it to continue it could cause my 'puter to be unresponsive. I click the button to cancel the script and continue as normal. Doesn't seem to have any ill effects.

Not a big deal except that it takes a long time before Windoze notifies me and I gotta sit here twiddling my thumbs. Anybody know what script is running and if I can turn it off permanantly?

Thanks

Without specific indication of the software you use it will be difficult for anyone to give you advice.

For instance : I'd guess the warning you're getting is actually generated from Internet Explorer regarding an active x script. If you're using a version between 6 -8 there's a 'fix' here.

At the least -- if you do a google search for your specific issue (that's how I found the above MS link) you'll find answers. I'd be cautious on applying any 'fix'. If you're happy with your browser otherwise why risk screwing it up for a minute(s) gain?

It happens to me at work and at home, 2 different PC's but both running XpPro and IE8. I have seen something regarding Facebook in the progress bar area of my screen when my computers seem to lag, and that is happening more often now that web sites are supporting it more. I'm not really willing to mess with IE with "fixes", so I guess I'll hafta live with it.

Thanks for the info guys.

As much as folks don't like to change, XP users will seriously need to consider changing out IE8 for a newer browser such as Chrome or Firefox. There are many changes coming down the line when it comes to the Internet and virtually all of them ignore IE 8 as a viable solution for browsing the Interwebz. Google Apps already considers IE8 an outdated browser and IE8 users are advised to upgrade as the applications are no longer compatible with the browser.

And while we're on the subject, support for XP will finally die as of April 2014. This means no more security updates for XP and IE8. So if you're going to stubbornly use IE8, bear in mind, after April of next year, your computer will no longer receive the security updates to fix known security flaws that are discovered.

Yuh I'm aware of the EOL for Xp, and I've already seen web notices telling me my browser is obsolete. Too bad, since Xp has been very stable.

I think I'm gonna give Firefox a whirl, at least at home. When it comes to software I'm of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" school (odd comming from a software engineer, eh?). But it seems that IE8 is pretty much "broken" so it's time to move on.

Thanks for the info.

I've eliminated most of the common flash / java / script / navigation issues of internet browsing with a Chrome derivative called Superbird. It's faster than Chrome while still providing decent security. All the Chrome webstore extensions are compatible (V2).

Truthfully, I never cease to be amazed how Intermittent Exploder can still command such a wide user base. I haven't used it since pre Mozilla when I was running Netscape Navigator and then the Communicator suite.

I'm gonna run XP on this machine until it dies. It's 7 years old in August - HP 2.66 ghz Athlon single core with 2.5 gb DDR 2 RAM. I use it on FB running 4 Chromium browsers simultaneously (Chrome, Chrome Beta, Canary & Superbird) near 24/7 as 'Quality testing manager' for a FB game app. The true testament to the XP O/S is it's still quite large user base.
