Smoker friends turned off by bad experiences

Having started vaping 6 months ago, upgrading to new devices and going completely off cigarettes, I've been encouraging my friends to start, even buying them starter kits and liquid. However, one of them in particular must have sucked in too hard and got some in his throat. He later got a bad sore throat. His experience is only compounded by another friend telling him he got ammonia after vaping. The good news is he occasionally uses the Blu cartomizer styles where he can't smoke, but I don't think those puny things will get him off smoking. I'm concerned that this kind of thing is how the anti-GMO and anti-vaccine movements got started. I'm not sure what the answer is.

Good topic!

I have a new friend who had a bad experience with e-cigs. She hasn't given up analogs because of it. I explained to her how I figured out that you can't suck on an e-cig the way you suck on an analog. When I smoked, I had a limited amount of time to suck in as much and deeply as possible to get the most out of it. After a short start on disposables, I switched to White Cloud rechargeables and followed their instructions on how to smoke them. I actually had to count out the 4 seconds inhale and the 10 second pause in between vapes. By the time I started to my eGo, I had established a good new pace... I just had to then learn about filling tanks, etc. Anyway, my friend was encouraged by my experience because no one told her that adjustments may be needed to vape. We took a road trip last weekend and she brought her Njoy e-cig for the ride. Her first few puffs tore her throat up... I just reminded her to slow down and remember that there was no rush. She's still not convinced, but she's at least trying.

My Mom gave me a little cartomizer style one to start, that had no nic in the juice. I liked the vape, but couldn't taste anything in the juice... When the cart was almost empty, it blew juice into my mouth...

I was so set on getting rid of the analogs, that I spoke to other vapers, and tried theirs. I found I would cough a lot if juices were too strong, but I liked the idea of it.

If I was not so ready to quit, I probably wouldn't have taken to it as well. I did resist for a while, thinking they were full of antifreeze, etc.

Give your friends time. Cigarettes were my security blanket. If I didn't have my smokes on me, I would get all jittery and anxious. I couldn't go out the door without checking I had enough. Tell them about the positive experiences you have vaping, but don't hound them about it. Refer them to these forums, as that really helped me decide to try it, after doing my own reading/research.

Cheapo ecigs and misunderstanding of the technique can turn people off. There should be a standard instruction book in the bag with the purchase or at least a link to a good tutorial.

I had to learn about my Joye 510 cart system ecig in 2010, but by the time I bought my first one I was a new ECF member, so I had people to ask and articles to read. My transition from cigarettes to ecigs was seamless.

I have talked to so many people about this and they all say it just didnt work for me. Most of them only tried it for a couple days and then only with a cheap e cig. They didnt know what to expect or how to take it. Had tried a few cigs but my first was a tank. Even then i had to upgrade just a little to get a satisfactory vape. I did however manage to get one friend back to vaping by giving them the tank and battery I didnt like so far they are 2 weeks with out an analog.

I have noticed in here many, many times members that joined in 2008 and faded away are now returning.
Saying they tried it, it didn't work for them or they didn't like it, but yet they are back to try again.
Some people too need more of a hands on training, perhaps a mentor, to pick it up.
As long as the idea / knowledge is given, it is up to the individual when and what they will do with it.

That's why I joined ECF. The info obtained here got me through the first couple weeks where you are learning. The first night I probably read for four or five hours (yea, no life) but I got some info that kept me moving forward. Now I try to pay it back by helping people, neighbors, friends etc that are willing to try.

Some people just arent ready and will grasp onto anything, no matter how illogical or false to keep smoking cigarettes.

I have a younger brother whos like this, refuses to even try e-cigs because he read an article that says they are bad.....despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary from three of his siblings.

Weve all quit using e-cigs and the benefits are obvious to anyone with eyes and a nose.

This is the truth! It is very difficult to get people to see reality if they do not want to. It's tough watching people use an ecig for a couple weeks and give up. But reality is the people that come to forums and research are few and far between. Why research when you can just go into a store and pick up a pack, I hear this all the time. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. :)

My ecig experience started a year and a half ago, when I got a VC starter kit for myself with 2 batteries to help cut back on ciggies. I wasn't attempting to quit yet, besides, I smoked mostly american spirits, how bad could just natural tobacco just be? (Sigh). Ran out of cartridges, was too broke to get a big enough order, switched back to just ciggies, graduated to full bodied and went gradually from 1 paw all the way to 3 paw.

Fast forward to almost two weeks ago, picked up an itaste vv and some juice, found ECF, and haven't looked back. Tried one a few days in...nope, gross. I prefer watermelon vapor, thank you.

Moral of the story...

I think education is our best tool. If i had known before all this that ecigs really were safer than pure organic tobacco, I would've definitely quit sooner. I honestly assumed that both were nicotine, so what did it matter? Maybe make some cards with the qrs codes or something for ecf, articles about nic vapor vs. smoke, etc. and hand them to friends who show curiousity. My brother (26) has been a vaper for years and quit ciggies for good a year or so back...I wish i'd done the same! I guess it's called google and some people use it more than others...

At least you're vaping now. That's what matters. Remember that words like "pure" and "organic" are usually advertising buzzwords these days rather than accurate descriptions. :)

Trust me, I see the difference. With as many food science courses I had to take, I know that organic products always have to meet standards. I knew they weren't good for me, of course but they were less bad. What I meant was education for our friends and family about the differences between smoke and nicotine vapor, MAOIs and nicotine, combustion, and all those other nasty things in ciggies that eliquid doesn't have. I had a smoker tell me early on in my VC days that no one knew what was in those liquids, and that regular ciggies were safer. Should've googled it, huh.

Well, I'm glad that you're here now. Enjoy! :)
