How to convert a smoker to a vaper?

My dad is turning 40 and for his birthday I want to give him the gift of prolonged health. He's been smoking since he was 15 and he's now at about 1-2 packs a day of his favorite Marlboro Silver Ultra-Lights. He's had asthma his entire life as well. He got an ecigarette a while back for his birthday from a friend but it was a cheap Blu kind of ecig (that analog design). He didn't enjoy it all. He enjoys the ritual of smoking because it gives him time to think and calm down. He's seen my T3S and Vision spinner and said he's fine with it but thinks people who own ECigs are phony smokers. Also about the "health effects" he read in a men's health magazine. I want to get him a real Ecigarette setup and convert him to smoking that instead of smoking all these cigarettes because if anything his lungs are beyond repair and I just want to help him out and keep him around. Any suggestions?

Heh... I would tell him that we're not phony smokers but informed, lower-risk VAPERS and then hand him a printout of this article to debunk his Men's Rag article...

oh... and telling him he doesn't really love you works too! ;)

My parents didn't raise no quitter!

welcome to ECF TheRhetorician ... He sounds like the original Marlboro Man ... tell him that most ecig users are not phony smokers ... they are ex smokers, who decided it was time to save their lives.

Get him a nice setup and ask him to just give it a try ... tell him you care about him and want him around for a long time.

Good luck ... Dads can be stubborn :2cool:

The biggest thing you need to do is convince him of the health benefits before spending money on something he doesn't want. The CASAA has a nice brochure/pamphlet that may help do the trick. Here is a link to it ... http://casaa.org/uploads/CASAA-Ecig-TriFold-Brochure.pdf ... If you can convince him of the benefits, then I recommend checking out Vape Dojo for a Katana starter kit. These guys have great prices and the customer service is top knotch!

Best of Luck!

I got my dad an eGo kit with some juice. Didn't last long sadly, I guess he is too old fashioned and set in his ways, stubborn old man.

he may still come around. I heard about ecigs several years before I tried them. initially I blew them off - thinking at least I knew what cigs would do to me......

As someone who still smokes, I'd encourage your father to do both, and not seek full conversion. Chances are good, IMO, that if he got into vaping even a little bit, he'd convert at least a little bit, and then would make a decision going forward that makes most sense to him.

I think seeking full conversion for another person is between uncool and very challenging. Like, I wish vapers would smoke 1 log a day. What do you think my chances are of convincing vapers who have sworn to never smoke again, to go that route? You think it would help if I bought them a pack of logs I still smoke and gave it them, while nudging them along to see things the way I do, ya know the 'right way?'

But at the end of the day they have to want to make the change, you can't force them. If you remember what it was like - the harder someone told you you should give up smoking, the more you smoked anyway.

At least you are showing him some different possibilities. The key to it is often getting the flavour and the nicotine levels right. If someone actually enjoys the vape and is satisfied, they are going to keep on doing it. If it tastes like trash and leaves them wanting a smoke anyway it may fail.

I relied on Ventolin (Salbutamol) for asthma since I was about 8 and saw my first e-cig two years before I decided to research it. Eventually I decided I needed to do something and that was the catalyst for the research. I never bought another inhaler, don't suffer from hay fever any more, and never bought any more tobacco.

Yes, when I saw my nephew with a cigalike I though it was "pretend" smoking too. Real vaping is different to both smoking and cigalikes, but I don't feel that I've actually given anything up. I feel like I've gained far more if anything - I can run faster and longer, feel decades younger, my skin complexion is much better, and I don't stink, and these are just the most obvious ones that anyone can see in me. I'm 49 and had been smoking for 34 years.

Your Dad will do it too - for himself. You just need to show him the way.

I like Jman8's suggestion of encouraging him to do both at least. Maybe his 1-2 packs a day will go down to 1/2-1 pack to start.

I, too, tried to talk to my mom about it. She just turned 60 and she's so skeptical. I've only been vaping about a month and someone told me it might take her seeing me for like 6 months before she gives it more serious thought. She wasn't the least bit interested in juices and all their different flavors or the lower cost. I'm gonna let time do it for her, especially since she's tried to quit so many times. And that's another thing...he has to WANT to be gone with smokes. I know I did. Their smell, their cost, etc.

Good Luck to you!

I'm in the camp that the best way to convert smokers is to enjoy vaping, be willing to provide info when asked, and not be pushy about it.

I work with a woman who a few months ago did not see herself interested in anything beyond a cigalike, and not real positive about those, either. I started vaping with a small ego about a month after that, then an itaste vv with clearos soon after. Around a month and a half later, she took a trip to the vape shop and proudly vapes a couple of ego-style PV's. I never prodded her to try e-cigs, I just vaped and answered questions when she asked. Another co-worker did the same a couple weeks later. The best way to convert folks is to demonstrate how great it is, IMO.

The reality is, and I think we all know it, that a smoker isn't going to give up their cigarettes unless 'they' want to. You can't force them. So, I would suggest that you do buy him a spinner and a T3s and some liquid, explain to him that you love him and don't want to lose him, and give him some literature with the facts and how to vape. Tell him that you're intent is not to pressure him but to inform him. Tell him to just try it when he's by himself. That's all you can do. In the end, it's his decision.

Good luck....
