it's amazing how many little "scripts" can be running in the background while i'm trying to use my PC. all those little apps can add up after awhile.

I don't mean to sound patronising but the only script running is the one on the banner supplier's web server - it has absolutely no effect on your machine.

i will raise an eyebrow if someone wants to install something on my machine without disclosing exactly what they expect in return for using it.
just let me know - that's all, hell i'll even recommend it if i think it's beneficial or even if it's just a fun little application.

Again, there is nothing running on your machine and there is no installation of anything involved

try to be sneaky or just "forget" to disclose something that may or may not cause a conflict on my machine and i'll delete it on general principal.
i'll also recommend the deletion to everyone i know and report it as suspicious malware.

As above, it is entirely harmless (delete it by all means if you are unhappy about having an signature image supplied by a non-supporing supplier but the risk to your machine is zero).

Unless its a PSP on a blue moon with the old software and a supplier fancied doing the TIFF exploit which would have the benefit of homebrew on it :p

So should I delete mine? I have become quite attached to it now hehe!

No, it you like it - keep it!

If you don't want have it link to smoke without fire then just edit the signature keeping the bit in the middle that looks like this:

[ img ]http://www.smokewithoutfire.co.uk/banners/260.png[ /img ]

(remove the spaces from the above)

Could link to a supplier of choice I suppose such as Totallywicked!!

You certainly could:

[ url=http://www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/ ]
[ img]http://www.smokewithoutfire.co.uk/banners/260.png[/img ]
[ /url ]

(remove the spaces within the square brackets)

EDIT - Whether it's ethical to use a free banner from one supplier whilst promoting another is a debatable point mind you

Actually, they can change that script at anytime on their server to do anything they want, not only change the message. If you scanned and your spy/adware software found it - that's good. In any case, you always have a connection to their server via your IP address. That's not good if your machine has vulnerabilities. (No firewall or AV or Anti-Spyware).

As a retired member of the NYECTF (New York Electronic Crimes Task Force, Manager of Citywide Information Security for the Dep't of Investigation) I advise you to get rid of it. I'm working on an ECF version, hosted and controlled by SmokeyJoe.

I'm really glad all this came up for discussion. I thought esmok-e post needed more visibility. I know I recently had a big problem with malware and adware which I've never had to deal with before. I tried several times to do that banner thing and finally gave up because I'm computerly challenged. So I don't know if it was a cowinkydink or not. Thank you esmok-e for looking out for us.

Erm not quite. In fact any viewer (whilst retrieving the image) is connected to their server.

Again, so what? This is how the internet works.

It has no connection with the person whose signature it is, they are not "connected" to the supplier's server because it is their signature (unless they happen to be retrieving the image just like any other web page viewer).

Yes, the supplier can change the image at any time.
That's about the worst that can happen, no biggie IMHO.

As a retired member of the NYECTF (New York Electronic Crimes Task Force, Manager of Citywide Information Security for the Dep't of Investigation) I advise you to get rid of it.

I remember an self-styled Y2K expert trying to convince me that my kettle and toaster would stop working on 01-01-00 because the chips inside them wouldn't know the correct time. I knew that was BS too.

Guys,

I've not read through all of this thread, but I will when I get a chance.

I'm pretty disheartened by some of the stuff that I read.

I'm the creator of the 'I've been vaping since...' banners. I am a sponsoring supplier on this forum. My banner tool collects no personal information other than your IP address (which is logged on ANY webstie you visit), which is used to drive my e-cig map tool.

I'm a software developer by trade, and I like creating what I think are useful tools. There is nothing malicious in my banner tool. Yes, it does drive traffic to my site, and raises awareness of my existence - but that's the extent of it.

How good for my e-cigs business would it be if I changed the image to 'Get your e-cigs at Smoke Without Fire'? Not very would be answer....

Anyway, like I said, I wanted to post something now and perhaps reply in more detail to any other concerns when I read this thread later in the week (I'm off to India for 3 weeks, so I'll do it when I get there!)
