Smoking Allowed Despite Ban in Public Buildings
Written by ALLAN OLSON. CASS LAKE TIMES

An uproar amongst both business and smokers occurred when the state of Minnesota banned smoking in all public places even in designated smoking areas. Now there is an alternative solution.

A new product hitting the shelves at Teal’s Supervalu in Cass Lake, in the next two weeks, provides an interesting, smoke free, tar free, and carcinogen free alternative to cigarettes.

“As far as I know we are the only ones in Cass Lake at this time that will be selling them,” Teal’s manager Tim Trosen said. “I don’t know if Bemidji or Walker business have them.”

A new product, Fifty-One, an electronic cigarette also named e-cigarette or e-cig will be available for purchase.

The e-cig was developed in China in 2004. It is sold there and in numerous other countries, including Brazil, Canada, Finland, Israel, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Sweden, Turkey and the United Kingdom.

It may look like an actual cigarette, but the Fifty-One e-cigarette, according to their website, smoke51.com, is a revolutionary, innovative electronic smoking device which offers the smoking community a healthier smoking alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes. The e-cig allows for a smoking experience without the flame, ash, tobacco, tar, carbon monoxide, or horrible and offensive smell found in traditional cigarettes.

Although often promoted as a way to help curb smoking, according to Wikipedia, in September 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a release proclaiming that it does not consider the electronic cigarette to be a legitimate smoking cessation aid, stating that to its knowledge, “no rigorous, peer-reviewed studies have been conducted showing that the electronic cigarette is a safe and effective nicotine replacement therapy.”

The Fifty-One electric cigarette includes the following items: one lithium ion rechargeable e-cigarette batteries, one nicotine e-cigarette cartridge with built in atomizer and one lithium ion battery charger with cord.

A sticker price of $95 and the replacement filter costs (five per-pack) at $15.95, may scare some people off. Proponents of the e-cig, however, state that consumers will save money over time.

One nicotine cartridge (filter) is about the equivalent of one and half to two packs of cigarettes, at today’s prices of $4-$5 per pack. Cigarette prices will climb again in April with another tax being added on cigarette purchases.

Users after inhaling will blow out “smoke,” which is actually vapor. The vapor, according to the Fifty-One website, contains mostly water and trace elements of nicotine and propylene glycol, which is typically found in food coloring, flavoring and mouthwash. Propylene is found on the safe elements list of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“This is the first I’ve heard about it,” Cass County deputy, Joel Norenberg said, Monday morning in a phone interview. “In my opinion it will be up to individual bar and restaurant owners to deal with it. I would think if they allow it they could end up with a big mess if others started lighting up.” From a legal law enforcement standpoint Norenberg said that since he was not informed of the product he could not speak about any possible legal action for those using it.

Customers in business where no smoking is allowed should consult the manager on duty before seeking law enforcement assistance on that matter.

Pike Bay police chief Zeb Hemsworth remains opposed to smoking entirely and focused his comments on local standards at the school and casino.

“The higher the standards our community can have for itself, the better,” Hemsworth said. “Leaders should lead the way. For example, why do the casinos still allow smoking if it’s so dangerous for all the people inside. Or why doesn’t our school district adopt and publicize a “Tobacco Free School Grounds” policy. “Most college campuses and public schools have already implemented similar policies to raise the standards and promote their part towards good health and better quality of life.”

Hemsworth stated that he is concerned about the example that is being set for the younger children, by the staff and teachers that the children often see smoking.

The age requirements for e-cigarettes remain unchanged. Only individuals 18 and over will be allowed to purchase these.
