I did the math the other night and I can understand why they are scared.

US Population: 319M
Percentage of US pop that smokes: 17.8%
Figure 1 pad average...

That's 56782000 pad!

Median tax rate (not including sales tax) is $1.53. That's $86876460 per day.

$31.71 BILLION per year!

If only 20% quit and start vaping, that's still $6.34 BILLION per year lost revenue.

Those numbers do not include lost revenue from decreased pharmaceutical sales. Again, they don't include sales taxes either.

I don't know about you, but if someone told me they were taking a 20+% chunk out of my income, I'd be worried.

HOWEVER, they are the government and are SUPPOSED to be on our side... NOT taking care of big tobacco, pharmaceuticals, and worrying about what, to people who bandy about trillions, should be a small bite.

I don't know about you,

That's not even including the MSA money, the yearly payouts the states get from tobacco companies because of it. If their tobacco sales drop below the rate it was in the year it was set up, the state then loses a percentage of the original percent of sales.

That is on top of the fact the MSA money is based off yearly sales to start with, so even if it doesn't drop low enough to effect the original percentage it still will drop if they lose any sales.

Then you look at how most states (CA is a prime example) took out bonds against the MSA money agreeing to pay them back with ALL the MSA funds received til it is paid in full, so if they lose the MSA money they will default on the loans.
