I spent two days trying to get mesh to work in my RSST. First hit or two was always good, after that burnt. Mesh to me was just too much trouble. Mesh too loose, mesh too tight, mesh with hole in center, mesh no hole, mesh around silica, cheese cloth around mesh, mesh around cotton, wire too tight, wire too loose, wire not spaced evenly, hot spot, not wicking, tilt not enough wicking.
So I went with silica. Doubled over looped 3mm. All these wicks were long enough to lay on the bottom of the tank. I had no wicking problems with any of them. With cap off, I hit the power button til wick started to get dry, let off, and wick was wet right away. No tilt needed.
1) 4 wraps 32 Kanthal directly on the silica. 1.92ohms. Working decently. Worked the 1st time.
2) 7 wraps 28 Kanthal, wrapped on a #36 drill bit. 1.3ohms. Pulled the silica through afterwards. It spit some with not much vapor. I used too large a drill bit and the wrap was too loose.
3) 10 wrap 28 Kanthal micro coil on a #39 drill bit. 1.76ohms. It was hard pulling the silica through the microcoil. Good vape though. Wick lasted about a week before it got gunked up.
4) 8 wrap 30 kanthal micro coil on a #36 drill bit. 1.91ohms. Still a little hard to pull the silica through. Again good vape. When this one got gunked up, I pulled some the existing wick through the micro coil, cut off the gunked/burned portion and boom, new wick.
I like the micro coil, because it is easier to pull the silica through without screwing up the wire. I will try a #35 drill bit with 7wrap 30 Kanthal micro coil. Also, if you want, you can disconnect the wires, pull the wick out with the wrap attached, rinse off the gunk, dry off with paper towel, reinsert wick in hole, reattach wires and you are good to go.
After that is butchers twine. Friend's dad works in a meat shop.
