Smoktech RSST RBA – No Throat Hit, Poor Vapor, What am I doing wrong?

Your wick has room and is not tight in the hole? Try dripping e-juice on the wick and see if you get better vapor production.

Thanks for all the responses. I re-coiled a new wick, a little bit better, but far from satisfied. Kinda bummed, as I really wanted this to work. When moving from analogue to electronic, you need to find a setup with a consistency in throat hit, vapor production and flavor - not sure if an rba can provide this as much depends on how you make the wick and coil, how you tip the device etc.

i use a carto tank for everyday pocket carry, outside use. very consistent very happy. making good coils is a bit tricky at first but then you get it and thats it. i only use genesis atomizers at home cause they tend to leak but once setup properly they are very consistent. you can check a very nice thread about working coils here:

So I now have solid vapor and my ohms don't bounce I'm at 1.6 400/32 with a 4/3 wrap. My flavor just isn't there. I've been going through many threads trying to understand where I failed. I just read on Ehumans blog a solid wick can be identified by leaving your unit on its side for hours with no leaking. I actually did that overnight to saturate my wick. I had no leaking. I do know one end of my wick is kind of closed off, I couldn't fit a paper clip all the way though. Does that need to be corrected?

Second question I'm using an rsst. I can fill the tank up half way then it just starts bubbling out of the top fill hole. How is that ? I can clearly see space in the tank but if I look down the hole the area right in the hole appears to have liquid in it.

The problem I'm having with my RSST is this: The first day after assembly it went great, but that evening some hits have a burnt taste to it that i can't stand. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Malazan

P.S. Oh, and DTLJohnny:

I noticed the same issue with the fill hole, I just has to put the syringe tip all the way to the bottom and fill it that way. If you don't have any blunt tip syringes you can buy them on lots of e-cig websites, and maybe even some med-supply websites for cheaper

I spent two days trying to get mesh to work in my RSST. First hit or two was always good, after that burnt. Mesh to me was just too much trouble. Mesh too loose, mesh too tight, mesh with hole in center, mesh no hole, mesh around silica, cheese cloth around mesh, mesh around cotton, wire too tight, wire too loose, wire not spaced evenly, hot spot, not wicking, tilt not enough wicking.

So I went with silica. Doubled over looped 3mm. All these wicks were long enough to lay on the bottom of the tank. I had no wicking problems with any of them. With cap off, I hit the power button til wick started to get dry, let off, and wick was wet right away. No tilt needed.

1) 4 wraps 32 Kanthal directly on the silica. 1.92ohms. Working decently. Worked the 1st time.
2) 7 wraps 28 Kanthal, wrapped on a #36 drill bit. 1.3ohms. Pulled the silica through afterwards. It spit some with not much vapor. I used too large a drill bit and the wrap was too loose.
3) 10 wrap 28 Kanthal micro coil on a #39 drill bit. 1.76ohms. It was hard pulling the silica through the microcoil. Good vape though. Wick lasted about a week before it got gunked up.
4) 8 wrap 30 kanthal micro coil on a #36 drill bit. 1.91ohms. Still a little hard to pull the silica through. Again good vape. When this one got gunked up, I pulled some the existing wick through the micro coil, cut off the gunked/burned portion and boom, new wick.

I like the micro coil, because it is easier to pull the silica through without screwing up the wire. I will try a #35 drill bit with 7wrap 30 Kanthal micro coil. Also, if you want, you can disconnect the wires, pull the wick out with the wrap attached, rinse off the gunk, dry off with paper towel, reinsert wick in hole, reattach wires and you are good to go.

After that is butchers twine. Friend's dad works in a meat shop.

This is how I got my RSST smoking like a BEAST - set up at .7ohms

Get a stainless steel 2 mm wire rope wick (7x7) and .5 mm kanthal ribbon wire, oxidise for safety
Put a small 3mm washer under the pos and negative connections - this will further drop resistance
Put a wrap of ss mesh round the top part of the wick where the coil goes first to reduce hot spots
Put ribbon wire under the negative washer and wrap a 2/3 coil, put positive connection under the screw head post so it is trapped beneathe 2x washers
Don't wrap too tight, flow is better when it's obviously not chocked

Caution: this may kill ego batts and will not work on vv/vw mods, I got a draw tube mod to power the beastly thing
When it heats up it should vape like a king, there's a few YouTube vids out there, check em out ;)

Instead of using mesh have you thought about just using cotton?

Build a micro coil (7/8 or 9/10 wrap). The coils should be very close together w/O overlap.
Once done, place one end under negative screw; the other, wrap around positive.
Take a very small piece of cotton, place it under the coil (which should be positioned above the wick hole) then wet it with some juice.....
Once your cotton is wet, fire it up.

When your flavor, TH, and vapor appear meh.....change the cotton.

The micro coil itself will last a long time.

BTW-- this is on my RSST.

I was having many problems with my genesis... then I got the best advice: your coil isn't touching the wick where it glows red. If your coil glows when wet or flavor is burned tasting, wrap your coil tighter and more evenly. If you are having poor wicking, it may he wrapped too tight. Find the happy medium and vape away.

This logic is for ANY build with ANY materials.

I can see the problem. You have too long of a top coil. What I mean is there is a gap where it comes off the wick and the positive post. The top coil should be basically touching the post post. That length of wire so no juice touching it so it glows red first and the rest doesn't heat enough. Also it glowing is giving you the burnt taste as its getting too hot. When you're securing the top coil to the post post push it over so it's almost touching but make sure you're also keeping tension on the wire before you tighten so the top coil is touching the wick. Then check for hot spots
