"3. rba's aren't necessarily better than protanks and vice versa. Some people like to tinker and get the performance they like, some don't. These ideals are SUBJECTIVE. "

Exactly....well said, that's why some people buy stock cars and bikes right off the lot, and others buy used, rare, classics and fix them up into high performance monster machines! Wait a minute...I do that too!

Amen! and thanks!

Embrace your inner Queue, prepare for weird eyebrow mustache assimilation.

Just to keep this on topic - Hi Jason, quite an introduction to our weird and wonderful corner of the internet. As you can see, most people here are uptight and full of themselves and never ever have any fun.

So welcome to you, pull up a chair and we'll all keep it deadly serious.

:tumble:

Agreed, you do what you pay for. But when the terminology, the linguistics of the situation is so foreign it really makes people hesitant to adopt the tech.

To put in layman's terms ... sure $160 is nothing compared to the cost of cigs, but as an e-cig newb i dont know what I am paying for.

Am I just throwing 160 away at nothing?

I'm responding before reading the entire thread, so I apologize if this has been said already.

Some people make up words because they think they're cool, the people, not the words. Sometimes, words are made up/adopted because there is a need to express something specific, and there isn't already a good enough word to use. If we went around calling our mods/vaporizers/apvs flashlight tubes, there would still be some very confused people out there. When computers became popular, the average john doe(or Jason Smith) didn't know what RAM was, or a gigabyte, but they do now. If you've been reading this forum I applaud you, it means you want to know. E-cigs are more complicated than smoking ever was, it's a product of technology, luckily there are places like this filled with people who are more than happy to help you along the way.

Okay, here is just one woman's viewpoint on some of what you're complaining about. I am a 72 year old grandmother to 18 wonderful grandkids, married for 49 years to the same man. I would say I live a pretty conventional life, with a few detours in my younger days.:)

I also smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for over 45 years, and really wanted to quit. I knew absolutely nothing about e cigarettes, other than I had seen some Blu commercials on TV which intrigued me.

I am not at all technologically inclined, hate math, and wouldn't know what an "ohm" was if it smacked me in the face.

That said, I have had no trouble whatsoever with the terminology and linguistics that I found on this wonderful forum. From the day I joined here a little over 3 months ago, I have been treated with the greatest kindness and patience. I've asked dumb questions, and then more dumb questions, but I have never been made to feel "dumb" here. Someone always was patient enough to try to understand what I was trying to say, since I certainly didn't know the terminology to ask.

I totally disagree with your notion that the general content of the ECF forum makes people hesitant to pursue vaping. On the contrary, there is something for everyone here. If you want to blow big clouds, someone will help you. If you want to just quietly and discretely vape, someone will help you with that. I don't want to rebuild anything, or wind any coils, but if I did, this would sure be the place to find out how to do it.

What I wanted was to find an alternative to killing myself with cigarettes, and I certainly found that here.

I love you Buggainok!

Carry on! :D

Its been my experience that average people still dont know what a gigabyte or RAM IS

Ok... true enough, they may not KNOW, but they're at least familiar with the term and have a general understanding that it's computer related. Let's use another example, mouse, though the kiddies may not know what a mouse is since everything has touchpads now... dagnabbit, why do people keep coming up with all this newfangled language!?!

I think that it's the jargon that will save vaping from the law makers. It gives it the whiff of anti-establishment, of being just a little 'other' while holding firm to the moral high ground. There's no doubt there'll be some battles ahead as 'they' really just how much tax 'they're' losing. In the UK smokers pay £12 bn. But, with luck, all the various bits necessary to vape will always be available on the internet. So the guys who know how to stick a bit of wire on the end of a battery case and make it work will be my heroes.

I invite you to make your simple connection as you described. I would like to see what you come up with and I will purchase your first working result. I only ask that you promise to post pictures of the vicinity after the explosion.

In all seriousness Jason, these things got me off of smoking and its very likely I would not be here typing this today if it weren't for these devices. For what they have done for me and for others I would pay twice what I did. Not only has it helped my health but it has brought people together, made new friends, created role models and started a new industry that I thoroughly support.

I think you want to ruffle feathers just for the sake of ruffling feathers. You could choose to talk about your experiences instead and you would be very welcome and make new friends and be part of this wonderful communtiy, if you choose.

Some people just want to quit smoking; some go a few steps farther and turn it in to a full-blown hobby (like me). There's no pressure to do anything, you can even go back to smoking if you so choose - most of us would rather you didn't, but it's still your choice.

I just don't get the "I don't want to yank your chain, but I will anyway"?

All over the place
So I adopted ecigs a while back when a 510 kit cost $50 and that was that cotton wadd hitting a crappy little screen atomizer. That may work for some but it wasn't enough for me.

So I went came back to the fold recently. I liked my protank... it was good but I just got a kayfun 3.1 and now I am content with my nicotine delivery. BUT I have a few criticisms:

  1. RBAs Tanks are way better than the Protank system, but the whole winding wire stuff is for hobbyists. I want the flavor and delivery without the winding wires. Some dude is reading and I am hoping will be inspired to design the plug and play kayfun clone thing. By that I mean no screw drivers, literally plug a new wick in and start smoking/vaping (what should I be calling it now?.... that was a rhetorical question)
  2. Stop coming up with nicknames for crap
    Mechanical mod = battery case
    analog = cigarettes
    RBA = ?
Everyone does realize this is just a heating element on a battery right....Stop coming up with new terms to describe stuff we already have described everyday, before e-cigs came along. Your new vocab means nothing to me and chases me away from adopting something that could be beneficial to me.
  3. Stop letting these people represent you:
    RiPTrippers on youtube
Seriously this guys looks like a serious pothead. I dont have a problem with potheads but e-cigs are directly related to them because of every head shop carrying them.
    Case in point:
    via vice.com /read/our-e-cigarettes-are-going-to-melt-our-faces-and-burn-our-houses-down
"The hobbyists, particularly the modders—a.k.a. the type who buy body kits and big subwoofers for their Acuras"
  4. Stop reinventing the wheel. 'Mechanical mods" are flashlights without the bulb. Don't BS yourself and think I am going to pay you 50+ dollars to basically provide me with a flashlight housing.
I think e-cigs are a viable alternative to cigarettes but there is a serious public image thing going on here.

Sorry I cannot post links, so there will be some manual effort with the above references.

1) If you want the function of a device, you'd be well served to learn how to use the device. Paying someone else to make those coils for you will negate your #4. Trust me, pre-made coils are a racket. But, you can pay someone to do anything for you -- there's always someone willing to accept money for every menial task.

2) A battery case is this:
BatteryCaseSymPill.JPG

As with all things that don't have a well established history, the names attributed to them, or even the nicknames, are going to be what it's called. I mean, do you call Coca-Cola and other sodas "carbonated water with the inclusion of high fructose corn syrup and other flavors"? That would be a rather tedious and boring way to speak.

Even the term "cigarette" is supposedly a term created to mean a mini cigar, as in cigar-ette. Is a cigarette a little cigar? No. It's a name that stuck, likely by someone that thought it was a clever, catchy way to describe that new combustible tobacco product. It's tobacco in a paper tube. But I'll call them cigarettes -- never really liked "analogs," but it's cool too if you want.

3) No one represents me but me. Rip Trippers represents me about as much as you do -- not at all. But I watch RT because he knows his stuff. I'll refrain from casting aspersion on someone because of how I *think* they look. Plus, this is a faceless forum -- it takes balls to put your face out there for every keyboard critic to take shots at you.

4) Mechanical Mods are not flashlights without a bulb, for if they were, that would mean any pipe was a flashlight without a switch, battery and bulb. Or, better yet, that would mean you could take a bulb out of your flashlight and commence to vaping -- don't try it. It is okay for products to share commonalities while having completely different functions and price points.

The vape world that it seems you take issue with lives mostly in your computer, but specifically the internet. Just don't "go there."

As new to vape, the learning curve is steep and the terminology is intimidating. I can read and read, but if I don't know all the terminology well, the full benefit of reading is not there. I can see it being off putting for noobs.

I don't mind paying for quality gear with analog savings. I would even pay for custom mods, like sneakerpimps mini ego-t, with halfling set up. It is just what I was looking for, and thanks for sharing it sneakerpimp, but it took me a long time to put it all together myself.

I might get into vaping deeper, but the ease of use vs intimidation gap, would ideally not be so large. When I came, I just wanted to quit smoking and was looking for the straightest and easiest path to that goal.
