You have all been so helpful. Several of you have suggested sticking to basic to start and I will. I have my little voodoo epen right now. It may not be the best on the market (I don't know it could actually be better rated then I think) but it is giving me a chance to get used to the idea of ejuice , vape maintenance, and battery life. Now my daughter wants one so I think a trip to the local smokers shop is in order. :vapor:

I'm a big believer in "don't throw the new folks into the deep end of the pool". And I hate those kiosk things. They're just mugging people far as I'm concerned.

Dunno much about the Voodoo but Googling it up, seems basically an eGo style battery with a topper a bit like the Vision "Stardust" style. If it's working okay for you, don't rush to spend a bunch of cash right off. Play around a bit, try some different juices, get a batter "feel" for what works and where you might want to go from here. And an EVOD topper might work on the battery you have. The threads look right from the pics I saw. You might be able to give one a "test drive" for not much cost.

I spent WAY more money than I needed to at the start. Got a little overexcited at how fast my smoking was dropping off when nothing else had worked. Turned out, I coulda spent maybe a fourth as much to get to the set up I quit smoking with.

Also, in time, pretty much everybody "upgrades". Save the big splurges on toys for when you know what works and what you really like. :)

Welcome aboard! It sounds like you are entering this fun world with a great attitude and an open mind. I agree with others that suggest going slowly. I haven't used the voodoo myself, but it looks like a great starter. If you are smarter than I was (and I'm sure you will be) you will avoid wanting and worse buying things you don't need during your journey, and if not at least you will be able to chalk it up as a great learning experience while searching for that perfect for you set up! Either way, it's not only healthier than cigarettes, in the long run it really is less expensive,

ps. Congrats to your daughter for deciding to join you!

Welcome!

HeHe. If I had to guess the mall e-cig was from Smoking Anywhere. They were RN4081 superminis in neat colors for about 10x what you could get from the OEM in China. See what marketing can do?
I actually had a RN4081 back in the day, I much preferred my Joye 510 pushbuttons. I actually still have a few that still work 5 years later. No idea if the RN still works, never cared to find out, they were kinda crappy.

Now there are so many reliable options, and ready availability of quality juice (big problem early on).
It is so easy to quit with the gear that is out now. Then you can decide if you wanna scrap vaping, or if you wanna be addicted to vaping toys.

You are absolutely right!! Smoking Anywhere! LOL The Blu is better than that little piece of crap... and the girl told me that one cartridge was equivalent to one pack of smokes!! I bought a whole bunch of the carts and got two batteries and one atomizer... thought I was good to go for at least two months! Imagine my disappointment when the cart ran out 20 minutes later.... swapped carts and about 30 minutes after that the battery died.... I'm amazed that I managed to stick with vaping after that experience!!

I am a huge research before spending type of person so as excited as I am I just have this innate need to start small. I googled smoke shops in my area that have a decent supply (and more important knowledge) of ecigs and juices. I went yesterday with my daughter and son in law to a local cigar shop that is run by a very nice young entrepreneur. If anybody is from the Portsmouth, NH USA area looking for a knowledgeable and pleasant place to shop ecigs then stop into Federal Cigar. The young man that helped us was informative without being pushy. Let us sample some (cloud nine and the vaper chef) different ejuices and really just gave us some good over all advice. Such a huge difference when the person selling you items knows what they are talking about and concentrate on having a happy returning customer over what sale they can make fast. I picked up another battery ( an evod does fit so I got it), and some Deep Thou7ght ejuice as well as a couple of others. He suggested that if we want to try some of the other juices to go to their website because you can purchase smaller amounts then he had. It was such a pleasant experience. My daughter and son in law got a basic set up and now the only smoker in my home is my husband. He may be a bit more stubborn, but as a former smoker (I love the sound of that. :p) I know this is a highly personal decision. Ty so much for your input as I value the word of experience.

Hello and Welcome Jode. Someone mentioned the MVP. I have 2 and I can reccomend it to you. It's different from the Evod as it is a box mod. The good thing about it is it's battery life and adjustability. You can get them now really cheap. I think 88evape has them for $39.99. You would have to get a tank to go with it as a matter of fact you could use the Evod tank. This is just my opinion. What ever you choose that keeps you off the cigs is a good thing. And Congrats on becoming a Grandma! :toast:

I was able to try out a MVP (Innokin) yesterday at a local, to me, cigar shop. I loved it, and may eventually get one, but for now I started with a pen style and want to give it a bit before I invest any more money. The way I am looking at it right now is that this is not only going to help me quit nasty ciggs, it is a new way of life. I can see myself really getting into this, but I am a pretty patient person and intend to take my time an understand before I consider myself knowledgeable to become a collector of sorts.

I honestly don't remember name of ecig or company. They were the type that looked just like a regular cig but the tip was hard. They had cartridges ( I think there were a few flavors but not a lot) that had different nicotine strength and a battery. What I remember most is that when I got home with my $300 worth of crap, I realized that it didn't quite work the same way as the demo. The battery was short lived and I felt that the amount of vape was much smaller. I did give it a fair chance though and when I went to change cartridges and opened one of the boxes I had bought it was empty. This really got me so I continued to open all I had bought only to find partially filled and empty boxes. I returned to the mall but kiosk was gone. I tried mall security and info and there had been several complaints lodge and directed me to BBB. At that time I didn't feel the need to take a stand, so I just ate it. As I said earlier I am so glad I found my way back to a much improved world of vaping.

Hi All,

My name is Jody, but I go by Jode. I am very new to this world of vaping, but very excited about it. I have smoked cigarettes for way too long (almost 40 yrs) and it is time to stop that and vape more. I tried to switch to ecigs about 4 yrs ago but was sadly disappointed with the hugely expensive products out at the time. Picture desperate to quit woman standing at a mall kiosk while a young smooth salesperson talks me out of almost $300.00 for something that didn't come close to what I expected and not even close to the demo I was shown. Fast forward to now. My daughter had to do a college project on ecigs and the information intrigued me again. I then discovered a couple of neighbors are now vapers, so I spoke to them to find out newest info. I am excited to delve into this new (to me) realm and go from smelly, sick smoker to fun, healthier vaper.

I've spent quite a bit over the last few months to find out what works & what doesn't. I use Kanger tanks, (Protank 2, Aerotank V2 & Aerotank Mega), My batteries are Vision Spinner II & the really great MVP 2.0. I would highly recomend the MVP 2.0 & Areotank V2. On ebay, you can get them both for about $60, including shipping, & have them in 4 days from a US seller. Great taste & the battery lasts about 2 days on a full charge. Being able to adjust power in your battery & air flow in your tank is very important to get the most enjoyment out of your juice. They all seem to have their own sweet spot. Find a local vape shop to buy your e juice at so you can sit and taste BEFORE you buy. This is the best, friendliest, most helpful forum, of any venue, that I've ever found. HAPPY VAPING !!!!!!! :) :) :)

I appreciate all the time you all have given me. At this point I am all set equipment wise. I have 2 batteries (one voodoo, one kanger), I have my glass kanger clearomizer for most of the time use with Deep Thought in it. I have about five other filled tanks filled with various juices that I am sharing. And because of the fact that I have a four yr old and 7month old I have my juices and spare clearomizers in a locked box. So for a while (until I need to buy coils) I think I am set equipment wise.

The questions I still have are in the area of maintenance. I understand that the coils can last approx. a couple weeks (10-14 days) But how do I know it needs changing? Also I did pick up my kanger glass tank which breaks down completely so I see that it cleans easily, but what do I use? And one more that also has to do with cleaning is if I use an ejuice that I do not like what is the best way to clean so I can use a new ejuice without the two blending into a horrible mess?

Hi Jode,
I have a medicine bottle marked "crap" that I pour the juice into from my tank. I rinse the tank and take a paper towel and blot as much old juice from the wicks as possible. Refill and in a few vapes the new juice takes over. As far as when to change you will just know. Burnt taste, hard draw, and little vapor production to name what lets me know. To clean my tanks I let them soak in some hot tap water a few minutes and then rinse. I either dry them with a paper towel or let them air dry.
Hang in there, once you've been at it a while it will all become second nature.

Hey Jode,
Moaufan's advice is pretty much spot on. Really the only difference for me is that instead of soaking in hot tap water, I use vodka, everclear, moonshine, or isopropyl alcohol. I soak both my tanks and my coils in this. I usually let them soak for a couple days (I have spare tanks/coils) and then take them out and put them on a paper towel up and out of the way (where the cats can't get to them) for another couple days to dry out completely... after that, they are usually good to go for another week or so.
You'll know when they need treatment, cause they'll not work as well... taste bad/weak, less vapor, harder to draw, and sometimes you'll see the juice in your tank get noticeably darker (light colored when you put it it, then darker when you look at it later... this is gunk from coil/wick mixing back into your tank juice).
Hope this helps!! Keep on keepin' on!!

Hi Jode

I started vaping recently. And to be honest, finding the right ejuice is harder than getting reliable kit. On the kit side, I bought some vision spinner batteries which do the job and are quite cheap. I bought a bunch of different atomisers (CE4's, mini protank 2 and 3, protank 3, aerotank, boge cartos...) and to be honest they all do the job pretty well. The CE4's are perhaps the least performing, but they are by far the cheapest (i paid 75 pence per piece), so they are nevertheless the best value for money!

But the hardest area was finding good ejuice. I hated all the tobacco flavours. Found some flavours I liked (my favs are: red bull, bubble gum, rhubarb & custard, grape) but found that 4 out of 5 brands of ejuice were poor. So finding and sourcing the ejuice brands that I liked was the most arduous part of the whole process!

Wish you the best in terms of quitting fags. Sorry, cigarettes. Cant use "fags" with Americans, lol.

Some of coil changing is subjective "doesn't taste as good". I mean if the coil burns out, it just doesn't work at all. But exactly how long one lasts is slippery.

The little heater coil heats up and cools down repeatedly and it wears. Also, stuff "gunks up" on it over time. Some cleaning helps. I don't do anything all that complicated myself (my coil heads cost $3 so there's a limit to how much time I'll put in :) ). I have extras so I have a little "rotation" going.

I soak overnight in plain water. Let air dry. Put at end of the small "line" of coils ready to use. When a coil reaches "huh, I don't like this" it get tossed and a new one comes out of the box (I buy little boxes of 5 online).

How often? I don't know. Not so much that it's a noticeable expense (and I'm on a tight budget right now, check to check kinda thing, I hate it). The whole thing is based on "feel". Taste, vapor production, whether I "like it" (some of which may be nicotine uptake which all us smokers did by "feel"... you just knew you wanted a smoke).

There are other techniques like vodka rinses and dry burns and using distilled water (I probably should, we have "hard" water here). It's worth poking around YouTube when you have time as for every clearomizer out there, somebody did a video. It can help to see things done rather than just reading. Especially because a lot of is quite simple and when you see it, you go, "oh that's easy". :)

Far as switching juices, same thing basically. An overnight soak leeches out most of the previous juice from the wicks. Most other parts of a clearo you can just rinse out. Having spares of the ones you end up liking and using most is, of course, something you'll want to do. Since I've settled on the iClear 30S for 99.99999999% of the time, I've picked up spares along the way. And kept parts from one I managed to bust. So I can always assemble a "new" one from the parts cabinet.

First, though, get a couple of spare coil heads. Having one up and burn out (and they do from time to time) is a pain. I always have a couple of spares with me. Just in case. And coil heads alone are usually fairly inexpensive. Even at shops.

You made me giggle like a schoolgirl over the "fags" comment. Two reasons. One is that, my best friend in high school (many moons ago) moved to the US from England so I became very familiar with her expressions and loved listening to her. One of my favorites was "oh, shut your hole" instead of plain ole shut up. The second is that I too have to be careful with the word as to not offend. See, growing up in the US (New England specifically) we called friends that were acting foolish, fags. It was not a derogatory comment toward any group of people other then people acting silly, it was just a 70's thing before we all learn about being politically correct. So call those cancer sticks what ever you like with me. I hope I don't offend with this comment.

Wonderful, I have gotten some great comments on cleaning. I am going to shoot over to utube to watch videos on cleaning. I agree about the "finding my perfect " ejuice. It is a bit tricky. I like most of the flavors, however, I have yet to find that one I can vape on all day. I have faith that I will. I only have one place accessible to me that let's you try the juices so another trip there will be done soon. Or I may check out sites and get a few smaller amount or sample packs. I expected a bit of a start up cost before settling so this is all cool with me.

And just a comment on how great I think this forum is. I am so pleased I found it.

We're glad you found it too, Jode!!
I recently found another vendor and tried a few of their flavors New Orleans Electronic Cigarettes & eJuice « New Orleans Electronic Cigarettes & eJuice Their prices are really good, and the few flavors that I have tried were pretty tasty! You can choose your PG/VG ratio as well (though their standard is 50/50 and works well for me). They have 10ml and 30ml bottles... the 10ml bottles are around $5.
