The Wisconsin state excise taxes on all tobacco products increase on September 1, 2009. The increases are as follows:
After this increase, federal and state cigarette excise taxes alone, on average, will account for $3.53or about 49%of the retail price of cigarettes in Wisconsin.
- On cigarettes, the state excise tax increases by another $0.75! Thats on top of the $0.62 federal excise tax increase in February and $1.00 state excise tax increase back in January 2008. In all, $2.37 in new cigarette excise taxes!
- State and federal cigarette excises taxes have more than tripled in a little over two years!
Aside from the unfair burden that these tax increases place on adult tobacco consumers, these tobacco tax increases will:
- The smokeless tobacco excise tax increases from $1.31 per ounce to 100% of the manufacturers pricebecause of a new tax system that unfairly targets adult premium smokeless tobacco consumers;
- The new tax method will result in adult premium smokeless tobacco consumers paying as much as $1.41 per can more in excise taxes when compared to other smokeless tobacco discount brands!
- The tax on cigars and other tobacco products increases 21%; Thats on top of the 155% increase on large cigars at the federal level. (The state excise tax is capped at $0.50 per cigar).
- Unfairly target adult premium smokeless tobacco consumers,
- Promote purchases through untaxed or lower-tax venues,
- Create incentives for contraband activity,
- Harm businesses, including retailers and wholesalers, and
- Do little to solve governments systemic fiscal problems.
