Yeah, I got some stabilized from Dennis. I'm gonna try it nekid; but if it seems to weak, I'll have to adhere it to something like that too. Hey, going with your ideas .. . . how 'bout a nice Flounder?

Your last one looks great! The sturgeon actually looks pretty cool. I have used it to back bows with, and it has a sturdy, leather like feel, with cool white dots on a grey field. Of course, now I have to fishing for supplies...

I've been looking at Richlite & Paperstone on-line. What thickness are you using for the doors? The Evil One is beginning to show some interest, but may be feigning to shut me up ;)

It would be cool if you could talk them out of some material. The Richlite folks can be weird that way. I would find a local wood shop that was "official Richlite blah blah" (like thru Richlite) and ask them for scraps. What I have is scraps from when I worked in a cabinet shop. I start by ripping to width, then I re-saw to ~5/32" thickness on the table saw (so, it doesn't matter whether I'm starting with 1/8, 1/4, 1/2" material). If you get all serious, and you can't source the stuff locally, lemme know, Gig, and I'll give you a blank so you can play too.

So, I started into this stabilized burl, and it's exactly as questionable as I suspected. Please keep us posted as to what kind of backer you source and techniques n' stuff.

The Evil Carpenter??? OOOooo. Get her on board, Gig!!!

My EvilOne was a political science major...

...'nuff said

:)

My Evil One is a Computer Science major by training...Evil genius by design ;) Getting her on board would certainly be a step up from my "butter knife and walnut tree" plan ;)

According to the Richlite website, the closest vendor is about an hour or so away from me. I have a couple friends that have pretty well-equipped wood shops and I'll be hitting them up ad see what kind of scraps they may be able to part with. I just don't know if they've worked with the Richlite stuff though.

The first prototype is gluing up right now. I made a door replica from hobby shop aluminum sheet. I am learning a lot, such as, my band saw will do nicely on aluminum, and you can drill with a Forstener bit through brass, with a little oil.o h, and my respect to all you machinists out there that deal in 1000's all the time. My history with a little woodwork and a little guesswork is not precise enough! I did get a door replica on the second attempt to fit without rattling, just went really slow taper ing the edges. Pics to come after finish and stain.

Well you get the point, just playing with what's laying around, and I don't have a wood/machine shop:)

Skratched up CD, razor blade, and a drill bit on my corded Dewalt, yeah somebody could take it further....I like shiny things:D

2 Cool! Rainbow action. Might play with that, and use the botched ones as backers!

Gorilla cyanoacrylate. Not the foamy wood stuff, but the superglue type. I coated it pretty good, because I knew it would soak in to the wood quite a bit, which made for a sloppy assembly. A denser wood would not require as much. Does anyone know what rob charges for unfinished doors? I have some zap a gap five minute epoxy that will get a try on the next round.
