So how long before all mods have OLED screens?

I've been wondering this for a long time, why with all the screen technologies out there these days even the american companies producing "high end" stuff still insist on using traditional LCDs in all their devices. There's really no reason that every screen-bearing device should force the user to decode letters to figure out what the menu function is. Albeit some are much better about it than others, it's still always been a gripe of mine. It makes me feel like I'm vaping a glorified calculator.

The OLED screens starting to show up in devices like in the sigelei and the eVic (although I haven't seen either one in person yet) really seem like one of the best ideas to come to market lately, imo. First off, they look beautiful. Honestly if devices like the Provari had the ability to display more than two characters (two characters!!) at a time I personally would be a lot more inclined to pay the steep price for one. It's almost useless to me to have a device that has all these features if the interface is so archaic and clunky. Take error codes for example - I feel this isn't something the average user wants to deal with. What the hell is an E1? Why can't it just tell you what the problem is rather than you having to go look it up when it happens? I feel like it would be more efficient for some of these devices to come with a decoder ring.

The current screened devices are more of a PV with a screen tacked on, you take that idea and allow it to tell people exactly what's going on and now you have something much more intuitive - one that normal people can use without an enigma machine. I feel in this day and age, vaping should be getting less complicated. I don't know about everyone else, I'd even be willing to pay a small premium for better clarity on existing devices.

Anyway, that kind of turned into a bit of a rant, but I hope the trend continues and we see less and less calculator screens as time progresses. If the Provari v3 has an OLED on it, you can finally put me down for one.

I agree..we'll probably be seeing more of the OLED screens pretty soon

The DNA20 has a gorgeous screen I have to say.

But I don't think OLED are entirely necessary. Only benefit I'm interested in is a decrease in power consumption on the screens part.

I don't like the screen being on. Maybe its just me but having a nice looking info filled screen would be to look at it often, having the screen on more often. Not useful for my vaping style.

Plus the Error Codes on the Provari are making best of the situation. Why have it say "short" when I know thats what E1 stands for? It takes a few times looking at the included sheet to memorize the error codes. I dunno, just isn't really that bad. First world worry.

If an OLED is going to increase the cost, while only providing an aesthetic boost, IMO thats not worth it.

Screen updates for those mods that make use of them is appropriate. In either case, the cost of the screen is negligible. A device will be more successful when users don't have to memorize the manual to understand what the device is trying to tell you.

I like the multi-line display on the DNA20d since you can get all the information you might want at a glance and not have to fumble through menus. I don't see how adding a more readable and useable display would have any downsides.

It would be more prone to breaking when dropped is the only down side I see.

While I have no evidence to support it, I believe the OLED would be more reliable. The typical Seven Segment display we see on devices are usually a packaged LED array soldered to a board. The package itself has soldering inside too. Each joint is a failure point for shock. OLEDs are flexible without their protective covers and are typically connected such as the DNA20d with a ribbon cable.

With those things in mind I think that OLED would be less susceptible to damage with shock events. I am guessing we are about to find out with more of the OLED type displays hitting the market on APVs.

OLEDS have two distinct disadvantages versus a more traditional display.

First is lifespan.Blue displays which are easier on the eyes currently last 14000 hours versus 25-40k hours with an LED of the same color.

Second is water damage, water can damage the organic materials of the displays. Therefore, improved sealing processes are important for practical manufacturing. Water damage may especially limit the longevity of more flexible displays.

In the case of mods and devices that sometimes leak juices ANY liquid has the potential to damage the OLED screen.
