as a failed teacher (i sucked at it-- i mean really, really sucked) i envy JC Okie and the chilled cat

my only imaginary friend when i was a little kid was "my teacher"

When you say you sucked at it -- really, really sucked, I wonder how. Maybe your humor was just a little too "edgy" for the students? What grade did you teach? That makes a difference. I taught college freshmen and sophomores, and they "got" me.

Got it. 'Nuf said. Let me just say....I don't know when it was that you were in grad school, but in the 23 years between the beginning of my teaching career and the end if it, the students got progressively LESS prepared for college English, and progressively LESS interested in learning ANYTHING. It got to be pretty absurd by the end. No matter what I said or did or talked about or tried to explain, the ONLY question was "Will this be on a test?" They were more and more rude and disengaged every year.

I was ready to retire when I did.
