Well here is my story:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/39555-skeptical-smoker-trying.html

You can see my first month of experience in that thread.

Basically you want a starter kit and a bottle of juice to begin with. The two models most recommended are the "Joye 510" and "Kr808D-1." Others such as the 801,901,m401 are also good too.

If you decide on a Joye 510 you can pick up a "no box" kit for $35 at Cignot your Midwest Electronic Cigarette store. (its a full kit without a box)

Some vendors such as eCigarettes and eLiquid from Awesome Vapor will let you return the e-cig if you just don't like it. From what I've seen its unlikely that you'd want to return it.

There are also sub forums here that list suppliers. All listed suppliers are known to be good. You may want to choose one in your area for faster shipping.

You'll probably get a load of responses, buy this one from here or buy this from there. Before ya jump make sure and read this, it's the perfect primer.

The Wonderful World of Vaping: An Illustrated Guide to E-cigs (Parts 1 through 6)

First purchase can be made from most any of the vendors in the Suppliers forum

Supporting Suppliers - e-cigarette-forum.com • The place for electronic cigarette reviews, news and chat

Whichever vendor you look at you can find feedback regarding them.

Whichever device you may go with just know that they all work reasonably well. To actually find one that works well for you is going to require trying one out and building on what you've learned.

Specific questions will usually get a ton of responses as well.

I am a big fan of the simple 2 piece design or "cartomizer", just screw on a new cart and puff away, no atomizer to worry about. All you need to do is keep your batt charged, no cleaning or liquids to deal with.

The only down side for me (and I'm sure other people will point out some other drawbacks) is that the carts cost a little more. Its worth it for me to spend a little more for the simplicity...
