hi all,

Now with the excitement of Woodvil's soon to be available many of us don't know the differences between a Grande and
a 18650 mech Woodvil.

Since it is a wood body how is the ground making contact? Are they wired?

The Woodvil's I have seen shown here on many posts and threads show the fire button is different and located on the side.
why why why???

Also, the 510 connection mount is a brass cup? I'm guessing.. does a rm2 or any other rba fit them as they do a grand?

This is what I see, and maybe there are other things to know about in the design differences form a Grand to a Woodvil.

One other thing is it's durability, hold strong are they? Grands are bullet proof.

Time to get schooled...

The Woodvil is wired. The wires are tucked back into grooves that run from the top metal contact plate to the spring plate and to the on/off switch. Switch is on the bottom. Wire is run from the top contact plate over to the 510 connector and down to the side button.

My thought is that with the wiring and top contact plate the side is the best place for the button. I love the side button. You wrap your fingers around the Woodvil and the button is right there. Just like the VV Grand.

The 510 connection is located inside the brass catch cup. On the new woods the catch cup will be big enough to run the RM2. On older runs the cups varied. Some easily work with the RM2 and some do not as the RM2 is now milled.

Of course wood is not as strong and durable as metal. It can crack or chip. Just like a metal can dent or scratch. You can't clean it under the tap with water.

The wood REO's can take a lot of punishment. But there have been some that have split from a fall. It depends on the wood mostly.

I treat my wood REO's special and don't take them outside. But that is because I treasure them, the finish, and I have that option. Some people take them everywhere. Some only use the wood REO's.

So, with some common sense in that they are wood, you can own a wood REO and have it last you a very long time.

Please take this as it is, a opinion that is my own.

So I do not own one but think I understand it. It's not mechanical in the pure sense, it has wires and switched. The negative battery spring is connected to a two position switch, on/off. A wire from that switch runs up a grove cut inside the Woodvil, if you watch CNC video Rob posted you can see the grove being cut. The top of the battery will also have a contact with wire coming off of it. The fire button on the side is another switch that is always open until you press and close the circuit. what I'm not sure about is if the fire switch is inline on the negative or positive wire, my guess is negative since if would cleaner to route.

FYI: Rob wants to design a true mechanical Woodvil this year.

You can't run it under water. If you want to clean the connector and the feed tube, you can put water or vodka in the bottle and squonk it up through the tube and out the 510 connection. Also, you can wipe it down, inside and out. It doesn't have a mechanical firing pin like the metal REOs, so there's never any filing or Noaloxing to be done. You can squirt water/alcohol/vodka...whatever, down through the hole in the center pin and out the bottom of the tube.

They're not as appropriate for every dirty situation as the metals are. That's a truth. You don't have to baby them, but you would want to take a little better care of them than you might feel the need to do with your "workhorse" metal REOs. Think of it as your "coat and slacks" instead of your bluejeans and tee shirt.

Having said that, they're not fragile at all....they are very sturdy and well-built, as you can imagine. And they're gorgeous. I personally think the electrical switch hits a little harder than the mechanical switch, so there's that.

Like nerak said, there are Reonauts who own nothing but wood REOs and have done fine with them.

Treat it like the fine piece of exotic wood it is. Howard's Feed n' Wax is a preferred wood preservative for this mod. Keep it polished with Howard's, wipe it down from time to time with a polishing cloth and use a REO Grand when you're vaping in the nasty conditions. It's like keeping the Caddy in the garage and taking out the 4x4 pick-up when you need the durability.:)

Now I know why I don't have a Woodvil 18650. I only wear bluejeans and tee shirts. Either that or I just wasn't around when they went on sale.
