So what's the best way to recharge batteries?

I have a Riva 510 (not sure what type of battery is in it - lithium ion, NiMH or whatever else there is out there), and always assumed you should charge a battery fully, then let it drain fully, to avoid memory effect. I've read some posts which suggest you should never let the battery drain, but rather top up charge it. What types of battery are in the 510, and how should you charge and discharge them?

Thanks

Its lithium ion, which has no memory effect. Actually the Riva's electronics will not allow the battery to fully drain - it will switch off (and flash the LED to show it needs recharging) before it gets to that. With lithium ion batteries if they drain fully, they die. So if you are going to store them for a while, don't keep them in a discharged state. According to Battery University li-ion batteries last longest with shallow discharge cycles.

Lithium baterries require no special charging techniques. Neither how often nor how long you charge them has significant affect on their life. What is important is that juice not be allowed to get into the switch, be careful not to strip the soft brass threads and keep them clean. Best way to keep them clean and protect your atty is to keep a wet cart/carto on each battery at all times when they aren't being charged.

Get a Kensington four-port USB charger from Amazon.

Just so you know Lithium ion batteries are also used in Laptops and mobile phones:)

This is the part that confuses me. Am I the only one who's ever gotten a cell phone where the manual tells you to run the battery all the way down after the 1st charge or two before charging whenever? Were those bad instructions?

Not being smart or confrontational I've just been wondering about this since the 1st time I read it doesn't matter.

Possibly it's to do with calibrating the battery level indicator on the first use.

That is exactly why. in fact you should let your battery totally drain then fully recharge on your cellphone every few months to keep it calibrated.

I have a 510 which is lithium ion and I charge both bats all night and a couple of times during the day. So far the battery life is the same as when I started using it. Just so you know Lithium ion batteries are also used in Laptops and mobile phones:)

Like you, I don't see any difference in battery life because of how frequently I charge or not charge. Some people just like to complicate things :)

In the Vapor4Life Forum on ECF, Morandir835 posted a thread with his battery charging research on the manual 808 batteries. They are not 510's, but the principle should be the same.

He found that the overall life of the batteries lasts longer if you do not wait until they run down before charging them. The difference in battery life was rather dramatic!
