Bristow, Ok.
Just get yourself a 6 volt or 12 volt Gel Cell battery like is used in a UPS around 10AH and a 5 volt regulator then make yourself a mega power pack that will be good for over a week of constant use. That would be the perfect setup for blackouts and hurricane packs :p

Can you elaborate on this? I am an old woman that doesn't have a clue what you mean but I am very interested. Thank you for any help you can give to me.

Here you go - I heard about these weeks ago while listening to Coast to Coast one night....

Solar Generator - Amazing Solar Generator Is Like Having A Secret Power Plant Hidden In Your Home.

LOL

They are a little pricey but man they look cool. I want one. Besides the website has that 'back of the magazine' look to it :D

WOW. $1600? This is my little beastie

Freeplay Energy

$299 is more affordable, however it uses a 7ah battery and gives 120w output max. Like I said, I have two but these dont even need a solar panel for real emergencies.

Actually that is what we have setup - a couple of UPS without anything plugged into them that are set aside for power outages.

That way we can run and charge the laptop, the cig, radios, TV, etc. for a few days until power comes back (hopefully it's only off for a few days of course).

So... **stormynights**: all you need to do is run by wallmart or best buy or someplace like that, go to electronics, and ask for an 'Uninterupted Power Supply' (Sometimes called Uninteruptable Power Supply) - They make cheapies to super expensive ones. Something that can run you a radio and keep your e-cigs charged up for a few days should run you anywhere from 30 to 60 bucks USD. Anything over that is just extras.

The way those work is you just plug them into the wall and they work like a surge protector. They have a bunch of outlets in them. You can plug things into them. Difference is... although it protects things from lighning and power outages... when the power goes out the built in battery keeps everything running.

People mostly use them so they have time to shut their computers down properly instead of them just being forcibly 'popped off' when the power goes out.

Take care,
- Hap

Well it was about *Solar* power originally ... now that we are on batteries and just plugging into the wall to charge on - shoot anything is possible eh? ;)

No problem - just keep in mind that you'll have to be smart about it...

Batteries are charged? unplug the charger.
Done with the radio? unplug it or shut it off.
Done with the TV? same thing.

Basically just keep an eye on things you have plugged into the UPS unit(s) and you can prolong how long they last.

I'm sure you are well aware of the obvious idea of all that, but for anyone reading be sure to keep that in mind as I have been a field tech for so many years and I have had so many calls. You don't want to know how many times I've been talking to people only to find out they had been using their computer until the batts on the UPS went out and did not understand why this was the case :p

Take care!

Yeah, you get the best of both worlds with this one. If your panels get knocked out then you can still use this. But I do charge it via solar and just use it for charging up stuff like my e-cigs and other gadgets. Its nice to have it there for spartan survival in an emergency.
UPS is cool for avoiding sudden PC shutdowns and blackouts.

I've got several of these, hate having to reset clocks, DVR clocks, etc. But here is my problem. Whenever the power goes out these UPS units start with a very annoying alarm. Then my roommate goes around and unplugs them and everything plugged into them. I've told her and told her what they are for and how they work... but no matter what if the power goes out she goes around to all of them and unplugs them and everything plugged into them.

She says she can't stand the alarm, and wants to make sure that nothing catches fire. I guess it is alright if I catch fire from being sooooo p***ed.

Does anyone know of ANY ups unit that does not have an alarm on it. I KNOW THE POWER IS OFF...I don't need no stink'n alarm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any help would be appreciated.

Just Open them up and disconnect the buzzer, no need to buy any to replace what you already have.

Okay...specifically...here is what I want to do. I want to charge the UPS unit overnight before leaving for a weekend campout. Load it in the back of my pickup, where I would just use a tarp to protect it from the rain. Then I'd put the thing in my tent and recharge/vape all weekend without having to re-charge the UPS. Will the UPS you are talking about do the job? Are their issues with just using a tarp to protect from the weather? Are there ANY safety issues you can foresee?

Thanks,
Dave
