I started with the V2Cig kit which is similar to the Volt (same KR8 threads, uses similar cartos), but had one manual batt and one auto. I quickly went to refilling, so I messed up a few times and got fluid all over and sometimes into the battery hole. Mine would occasionally stay on and sometimes not activate unless you sucked really hard. But I think it sounds like yours is more of an issue from the factory - like the sensor is too sensitive. I doubt yours had a chance to get fluid contamination that quickly.
One interesting thing I found out with my particular auto-batt was that I could get it to activate by gently blowing into the LED end. I'm wondering if you can get yours to shut off by sucking on the LED end? Or maybe just giving the carto end a quick blow after each drag? Sounds like a PITA, but then again, so does sending it back and being stuck with only one battery in the mean time.
EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it - blowing into the carto may actually cause fluid to contaminate the battery even more... erm, use this method at your own risk. You may want to remove the carto when trying that out.
Also, there was a vender that had a small starter kit on sale for like $8 for a limited time - I'll try to find it. I'm sure the quality is probably less than the one you got, but for that price, who could complain?
EDIT2: Starter kit for 7.95 - one batt, charger and two cartos (KR808). I've got egos now and almost ordered one myself lol
