Ok, ill do my best.

An atomizer is usually a small little piece that you have to drip a few drops of liquid down into the top. Some last about 3-4 puffs, and I think some last a bit more.

A cartomizer is a little cartridge that is packed with a filler material and juice. Some of them also have a tank on the outside of the cartomizer, with little holes punched in the bottom of it to feed it juice. These tend to mute the flavor more than an atomizer or clearomizer.

A clearomizer is a little tank, with a wick and coil either at the top or bottom of the tank. They're very easy to rebuild with replaceable heads, and don't tend to mute the flavor as much as a cartomizer, however more than an atomizer.

There are more specifics involved I'm sure, but this is the basic description lol

Atomizer - this is basically just a cup with a coil and couple of wicks and/or a bridge inside it. Dropping liquid onto the coil directly is how most of these work, but all systems have this basic simple concept, coil, little bit of wick, and some liquid to produce vapor. A direct atomizer produces the best vapor, flavor, and throat hit of any attachment, just most attys dropping 3-4 drops of liquid into it each time need a vape can be a little tedious, I mostly drip/atty at home.

Cartomizer - this is an upgrade to the straight atty that I have seen, little longer barrel, atomizer coil is generally vertical compared to horizontal like in a atty above, with some type of filler surrounding the coil and an air tube. These the filler soaks in the liquid and feeds it to the coil, thus becoming the wick and replacing it to an extent. These you can fill more liquid into and are nice for portability without much leaking and less time between refilling.

Tanks - Come in different forms, cartomizer tank (DCT), clearomizer, atty tank system like the AMP tank. Tank all it does is hold extra liquid. Like cartomizers and hate refilling them or running out of juice very often for the carto, get a carto-tank, punch or slot your carto, prime the carto with liquid like normal first fill, insert into carto tank, fill the carto-tank up, slide fully seated, put on tip, vape away, the liquid in the tank feeds the carto. Clearomizers, some type of wick feeds liquid to the coil from the tank, larger tank, longer between refills. Atty-tanks are a hybrid of a DCT and clearo, having the advantages of both a tank and a straight atty, same flavor and such of an atty compared to other attachments, just don't have to do a direct drip al the time.

Hi

I like pictures:

You can use a cartomizer (“carto”) by itself by just putting a drip tip in the top or it can be used inside of a carto tank.

The liquid in a carto is held in batting/filler material, wrapped around a heat coil. In a carto tank the carto has hole(s) punched into it allowing the liquid to be wicked into the batting/filler where it comes in contact with the heat coil and produces vapor.

(the hole is so it can be used in a tank)

Dripping attys

These are two most popular attys for when new vapers give dripping a try. They are easy to use and inexpensive:

A 510 atty looks like this and takes a 510 drip tip:

A 306 has the same components as a 510, but doesn't have a jacket (tube) going up the outside so you see the bridge and the wick. It has a 510 battery connection, but due to the slimmer body needs a different sized drip tip.

And to further give you too much information...

This is a knock-off Vivi Nova (not an authentic Vision), but it more closely shows the components. The wicks draw the liquid in the tank up to the replaceable heating element (head) at the top. The wicks come in various lengths and the heads in different resistances. Sometimes called a “tank” (because it holds liquid), Vivi Novas operate like other clearomizer (clearo) with a top coil wicking system. They are available with plastic or metal tubes.

Vivi Novas screw into the internal 510 threads.

Kanger EVOD is another popular choice at the moment. It’s a “BCC” (Bottom Coil Clearo), sort of like a Vivi Nova upside down. The coil is on the bottom. It has tiny wicks in the coil, but they are always in the liquid, so they don't dry out. With a BCC, the replaceable “heads” are screwed into the bottom. The EVOD connects on the external eGo threads.

Kanger Protank is also a BCC, but is made of glass (Pyrex) and metal. It screws into the internal 510 threads. The mouthpiece is not removable. Like the EVOD the heads are replaceable and available in different resistances. It comes with a “vanity” thread cover (cone cover) to make it look more streamlined on an eGo type battery.
