Hello ECF, my name's Dylan and I'm new here. Correct me if I'm wrong in the area of posting this, no offence will be taken.

Okay, here's my question.

I purchased a Sony vtc5 the other day from a local dealer. I have read posts that these are all fake now? There aren't even a single real one? Is this true? I can post pictures if need be, but I am EXTREMELY concerned about my safety... Current setup: KangerTech Kbox 40w regulated mod. I am really concerned with my battery unexpectedly exploding my pretty face off.

Is my box mod safe? Will I have a potential of my battery being drained too fast and go kablooey?? I take my battery out occasionally and check the heat on a sensitive part of my skin to see if it is hot and it never has been at all hot. I would love any advice you can give me. Thank you!

I also have an AW IMR 1600 mAh 3.7V 5.9WH red battery that's old and was given to me, curious if it's safe to use as well. I also have a Dulex BRC 3400 mAh, low discharge, no memory effect, low reoccurring operation, short-circuit and overcurrent protection battery as well. Is it safe to use that too?

Hey there @dyllysoilly!

Disclaimer: *I'm not a battery expert*

It's not that they are all fake, it's that Sony is not distributing them to battery retailers/consumers directly (as far as I know) and will only distribute them to, lets say, a power drill manufacturer. I am waiting on a couple of genuine ones from Orbtronics that have been confirmed to be genuine 2015 cells.

Now as far as the safety, it will depend on your build, and the resistance of the coil. Seeing that you're using the KBox, and can't go above 40w, assuming it is a genuine VTC5, you should be fine.

On the other hand, if it happened to be counterfeit, there really isn't any cheap way to determine the continuous discharge rate, or amp limit. I have linked an article that you can use to visually check for the differences. Feel free to post photos here though, and I'm sure one of the resident battery experts would be glad to help :)

Thanks you for the quick reply!

So you can still purchase them from certain retailers then? Interesting and good to know! I try and build around .5+ due to my Kbox not letting me build under .4 due to sub ohm protection and safety built into the mod.

I would love a battery expert to just give me some quick advice too, to be sure. Especially on my alternative batteries.

It says my photos are too large. Must be tapatalk? Let me go to the actual site and repost pictures. Sorry.

All good :) Yeah, Orbtronics is my new go-to site since my local vape shop decided to start charging $13 for one Samsung 25r (normally $8). They ship out of Florida, and my order shipped the same day I put it in (EST zone)

The AW I know is trusted by a lot of vapers, but I personally like the Samsung 25r for how I build and vape. The " Dulex BRC 3400 mAh, low discharge," I absolutely would NOT use for vaping, you need a high discharge to not put stress on the battery. Save that one for a nice flashlight :)

Tagging @Mooch, and @Baditude for possible advice as they are the forum battery experts.

Also, please check out Baditude's blog entries as he has some VERY well written entries on the basics of mod batteries.

I figured that would be said about the dulex, it won't even let me vape above 20, sometimes 13. It says the battery is "dead" by blinking 15 times. That one is now off limits lol. I'm just curious as to why batteries explode and what not, is it due to heat? They have never gotten to the point of unsafe heat, but I've only been vaping for a few days on a regulated box mod.

I don't know if I should use the aw because I didn't buy it brand new and am unsure of it. The vtc seems legit. Just really worried, I'm paranoid lol.

So I'll stick with the vtc, for main vaping. Aw for backup waiting for charge, since I feel the vtc is a legit battery.

But I want to buy a legitimate battery that I am gutanteed safety. So Samsung's batteries are the best and most guranteed I'm assuming?

I am only staying with this box mod for a really long time due to simplicity and regulations it has and the make of it feels so good in my hands, lightweight as well.

But the vtc I got didn't come packaged he just handed it to me.... I want to know for sure the continuous, do these samsungs come with detailed info on the box or what?

Genuine VTC5's can be found at several vendors now. Places to try include....
    Illumn
    Orbtronic
    RTDVapor
    IMRBatteries
Liion Wholesale (where I get mine)

Forget using that Dulex protected battery and the old AW. New batteries are dirt cheap, incredibly inexpensive for something you use for hours every day for a year. Stick with your VTC5. I can't tell from your pictures if it's genuine or not but if it's not getting hot during use you should be ok.

For your device I recommend the LG 20A 3000mAh HG2 battery. Plenty of power and the highest capacity for any battery rated over 10A.

Batteries burst when they reach too high a temperature. But, they usually "vent" first. This means a pre-weakened area of the battery under the top cap splits open to relieve the pressure. It's actually quite hard to get a battery to burst, typically only a short-circuit can cause it. The explosions we hear about are due to bursting batteries being contained by a device without huge venting holes or a side panel that pops off. Essentially, the device becomes a pipe bomb.

Sounds like the safest and smartest way to go about this. I compared my vtc5 to the link he mentioned above (idk how to link his name, total forum noob here..) and it is 100% legit to me.

I got scared using the basic green-yellow-red charger and bought me an i2 intellicharger to be safe hehe.

I will keep these sites in mind! Thank you for the reputable sources and the information guys! I hope this post can help future vapers.

My devices recommends a minimum of 20A continuous, does that brand have a 30 to be safe?

Is the continuous literally continuous? No drops? Does this mean once the battery can't output the said amperage it is said to be "dead" and needs a recharge?

My Kbox has a big KangerTech symbol on the side that's cut out, so that's good. You guys are really helpful. I don't like being a noob and asking these questions, but we all start somewhere don't we?:)

Pardon the vaping-hysteria-tone here, but I would much rather assist in any way getting the help you require (Thank you @Mooch) than having to read about another tragedy from vaping that will only harm this community.

You can get a 30A-rated battery but you will be charging it much more often. High-amp batteries have lower capacity. Your Kbox only draws about 13A max though. You're fine with a 20A battery. Even up to 60W-70W with the HG2 battery.

Your Kbox will tell you when the battery needs recharging. After that point it will just refuse to fire the coil.

Did you calculate the Amp pull due to my max wattage?

F*** yeah man, I appreciate all this. I will be purchasing 2 HG2 as soon as I can.

I kinda realized I asked a stupid question, lol. Duh it just won't draw anymore because there's nothing to draw and Amps are how much energy than can be pulled at one time without any problems.. right?

Lol. I think that's all I need to know about that. Kinda went off the topic of the battery, but I guess that's okay!!

I know people on forums don't like off-topic discussions on a specific thread, but this is my thread so its okay...

Thanks, and is there a way to rep you guys? Or is it on the full site?

Yes, for a regulated mod you use this equation: Max Amps = Max Wattage / Min Battery Voltage.
For most mods the minimum battery voltage they will work down to is 3.2-V, adjust as necessary.

Think of a battery as a bucket full of electrons. As you pour out electrons the vpltage drops. Eventually you only have a few electrons in the bottom of the bucket and the voltsge gets low. The number of amps is basically the number of electrons you're pulling out at that time, i.e., how fast you're emptying the bucket.

Sorry, I don't understand your comment about how to rep us guys.

Makes sense! I was meaning like, on some sites you can give a person themself a +1 for their reputation. With the +1, (not a comment, but a meaning) this guy helped me so I'm going to let everyone know when they go to their profile that he helped someone. I've seen it before. You basically give someone a single good vote and can't give them anymore. But basically it shows how many people said this person is a helpful person. If they don't have it, they should!
