Hi everyone, I'm new here, just found you all tonight. I started vaping approx four weeks ago. I've smoked on off since late teens. I'm 42. April 2015 we lost our 11yr old son and I used smoking as a coping mechanism. I have to stop. My other children need me. Tried the patch and gum with no cessation. vaping has seemed like a miracle. Amazingly I haven't snuck a cigarette in weeks. I bought an Endura T18 at our local smokers choice and a delicious strawberry flavor 70% VG liquid with 6mg nicotine. Seems perfect except this wicked sore throat and swollen glands. I went to my doctor thinking I must have an infection. Took a round of antibiotics which did make the symptoms go away but they are back just one week later. I did a little research and found this could happen from vaping. What do I do now? Is it a glycerin irritation/allergy. Should I stop Vaping. I was so hopeful I could actually quit cigarettes. Any advice would be amazing. So glad this group exists. Thank you

Hello and welcome! It could possibly be the flavor you are using. I've found that some flavors do the same for me, strawberry based or tart flavors. Try switching to a different flavor like a tobacco or possibly something more mellow. Are you experiencing any spit back? When you vape do you feel liquid shooting out from the mouthpiece? In my experience that has also caused a sorethroat, if so use a qtip and try to absorb all the juice at the bottom of the coil.

Maybe a too old coil. You've been changing them once in awhile?
Just changed it yesterday. That's the first time I ever changed the coil. The salesperson at the store said change the coil when it tastes burnt or bad. The first coil lasted three weeks. After changing coil, the hit tasted perfect again but the sore throat is back.

It could be an additive in the juice you're using. Did these symptoms manifest immediately after you quit smoking? It could be a symptom of your body cleansing all the muck smoking left in your mucus membranes/sinuses/lungs. Try a new flavor from a reputable vendor as suggested and see if that helps. :)

Sorry for your loss. Welcome to ECF.

One thing nobody mentioned is drink more water. Both PG and VG are desiccants and can dry us out badly. Also the water will help flush the nasty chemicals from smoking out of your system.

One thing I was told years ago when I started vaping was that there were 3 particularly bad spots when vapers tended to have problems.
3 days
3 weeks (when a bunch of the smoking chemicals start leaving our bodies and we start coughing up the rubbish from them)
3 months (when more of the junk leaves us)

I am glad you have consulted a doctor and if this does not clear up soon I would say go back.

If it is a sensitivity it could be a flavoring or it could be the PG or the VG

My first thought was also dehydration. When I first started, and still time to time, I will get a sore throat from vaping. Or dried out lips or nasal passages. I up my water intake and remember all the gross stuff I put up with while smoking. Good luck and my heart truly goes out to you.

yep i'm with myrany, vaping will dehydrate so you need to up your water intake

also it could be the coil, not all coils last that long...mine last a week maybe two if lucky....but yes once you get a burnt taste or a dry hit change it because by that point you are more or less smoking, smoldering the wick. If you notice you aren't getting a good vapor or flavor it's probably time to change it.

and well, antibiotics are good and all but they don't always work the first time around....and yes always clean your mouthpiece when sick, i buy the cheapest of the cheap bottom barrel vodka to soak my vape gear in to clean them.

Now typically people are allergic to pg not vg, but as with everything it is a possibility...so you could try getting a higher pg juice. When i first started out i vaped more pg than vg but over time pg started irritating me so i went higher vg, now i'm stuck at about a 70vg otherwise the vg starts to irritate.
The irritation could also be the nic level, depending on how much you actually smoked in a day the nic might be too high but at 6mg i doubt it....
also it could just be that juice, maybe there's a sweetener in it or what's it called dyalyct (sorry i forget what it's called) and i do know a lot of people were allergic to it so most places stopped adding it in but some still do.

or it may not have really anything to do with vaping....but again, when first learning to vape, it is different, it's not smoke, it's water vaper.....and with vaping you don't have to take a lung hit....just hold it in your mouth and you'll still absorb all the nic. It is a bit of an adjustment. Plus your body is detoxifying from all the crap that are in cigs.

best of luck and hope you get to feeling better soon and my thoughts with you and your family.

So sorry to hear your story @Angelmom

Vaping is a sort of miracle and you should embrace it for the future with your children.

Not everyone finds the transition easy. It took a while for some of us to find the right products and Nicotine strength. 6mg is not a lot, but you haven't said how much you were smoking.

These are thoughts; read/take on board/ignore as you will.

1. Quitting smoking causes more problems than starting vaping. Often folk jump to the conclusion their vaping is causing symptoms.

2. Doctors can be supportive, but some live in the past preferring to believe the nasty rumors created to slow down or discourage uptake of e-cigs. I think we are past that now. Public Health England is happy to say vaping is 95% safer than smoking. That number is good enough for me.
In the UK, we have stop smoking services supporting Vaping. Most doctors are on board. Those who are not need to listen to the scientists at the top of the chain, not the tobacco and pharmaceutical firms (b.t.w.) who are intent of keeping their slice of the $ pie $.

3. 3 weeks is too long for a coil, unless you are vaping very infrequently. Don't trust the shops on this; they tend to exaggerate. But, a nasty old coil would taste bad before you are likely to be inhaling something worrying.

4. In most situations, I think higher nicotine is better than lower. It's got to be better to vape 10 times rather than 20 if you are suffering with symptoms. I reduced down from 18 - 12 - 6 (mg) quite rapidly once I was happy my symptoms had gone (that was nearly a year in the end). I had mild PG and flavor reactions. Now I can vape 10-80 watts how the mood takes me.

Good luck and may you be blessed with success. Please try not to stop vaping... minimize your use if you must, but try not to go back.

:)

I tried the T18, but found that the fixed battery output is too much for me,
5.5v/14w and was having the same issue.
I love the tanks so I found another device with variable v/w to use it on and that seems to work for me. I am so sorry for your loss.

Check for lumps..

I went in to the doctor for a sore throat, turned out it was cancer (absolutely unrelated to smoking or vaping). In your 40s... time to get a full checkup with all the bells and whistles.

Moral of the story, if not sure, get it checked.
