I was looking into this at one point, I believe what we are looking for is "malic acid" as I have seen it used in several sour flavors from e-smokey treats. This is the acid, along with citric acid, that gives jolly rancher(tm) their pucker. It's VERY potent stuff.

I found a supplier that supplies it by the pound and was thinking about getting some. I'm willing to split it up as I believe a pound is more than I will ever need for juice in a lifetime.

@aprioristic Good Find, they have a lot of stuff I would find useful for soap making too.

Concerning safety of vaping, my research is incomplete. The only thing that I have found concerning it is the possibility of a certain type of pneumonia caused by high acidity in the lungs. Not aspiration pneumonia, which is all I'm getting now when I Google it.

Also, I've not been able to find any information about the solubility in PG. It's very soluble in water, and it usually holds true that anything that is soluble in water is more or less soluble in PG. I know it's already been done is about the best I have. I'll see if I can find specifics.

@Carless I've read that citric acid doesn't work so well. But don't let me stop you, I don't think citric acid will be quite sour enough to be effective without clogging your atty. Just my best guess.

I think both malic and citric acids are in tobacco smoke. I found this on citric, possible bronchioconstriction in animal tests, but are the proportions way off? I can't make much sense of it from a quick look. My feeling is that both are okay but I like to know more than just that e-smokey treats puts it in juice lol... Even though a lot of these flavorings are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) for ingestion, I don't think there is much research on them for inhalation.

I might just order on my own from EW, but I could still be in too. I was going to get around to contacting them about their tinctures. From the ingredients they seem like they would be fine as flavoring, just natural extracts/PG/PGA or something but it says not for food use. They seem to have regular specials but you have to look on their facebook too.

I've ordered some of the Malic Acid from Nature's Flavors and will let you know how it goes and possibly split it up. I think an ounce is going to amount to quite a bit (a ton!) for flavoring e-juice. We'll see :)

If anyone is interested please PM me and I'll get back with you when it arrives with details.

My results weren't that great. I tried mixing 1 tsp citric acid with 1 tsp of three different liquids: PG, PGA and Deionized water.
The only one that dissolved completely was the deionized water. The PG dissolved about 95% of the acid, but only after several blasts in the microwave for 5 seconds each time. I think a 1/1 ratio exceeds the saturation point by a little.
With PGA, it didn't dissolve very well at all, even after microwave treatment.
Both the water and PG mixtures tasted very sour on the tongue, I only tried vaping the water solution at 3 drops per ml of a raspberry lemonade DIY mix I had on hand.
Barely detected any sourness dripping it, so I gave up at that point, deciding that for me, the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze. I will leave further experimentation to those more motivated than I. I'm a noob still and only have three 510 atty's for my ego. If I had extras lying around, I might be more willing to possibly sacrifice one.
