I'm with Led Gecko. Most filler is PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) ie. polyester - the polyfil, Pyramid Tea bags, blue foam, aquaclear are all made from this. And unless you burn it at a very high temp it is safe to use as a filler.

All other materials should be thoroughly researched before using. Some of the most "obviously safe" stuff - say cotton, is hazardous to inhale.

I'm with the guys :D

People have been looking for the holy grail for cartridge filler replacement for a few years on this forum and if you search here, you'll find almost everything has been tried. This similar Ask The Vets thread has some answers to what seems to work well for most people: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ask-veterans/95925-cartridge-help-510-901-a.html

Before using ANY material that hasn't been discussed or tried on this forum, make sure you do some good research to figure out what the material is exactly and determine if it has chemicals added (like soaps or fire proofing) and what the melting temperature of the particular plastic would be (you really need something that is resistant to heat at a level of at least 250 degrees, but higher if you are using a mod that runs 5v or more). Contact the manufacturer to make sure it is a safe material if you can't find exactly what the material make up is on a package.

Most of the things that won't work are discussed in the Not Advisable forum:
E-Cigarette Forum A good place to read to keep you out of trouble!

The most popular cartridge filler replacement materials are aquarium reticulated foam filters since they are used in an environment with live animals, so are non toxic. Most are a polymer such as polypropylene, polyester or polyethylene. All of these have a fairly high melting point so heat from the atomizer isn't going to melt any of them.

A few of the most popular are the white Fluvial woven poly blocks (similar to pot scrubbers), the blue MarineLand form (smaller cells) and the larger cell AquaClear foam (tan color foam with a larger open cell).

The foam ppi (porosity) is important and everyone has a favorite (mine is AquaClear).

Lipton Pyramid material (made of PET... thanks Kent!) is a popular cartridge modification material as well, but seems to only work well in the 510 and smaller sized cartridges whereas the aquarium foam can be used in all models such as the 801 penstyle and also is used in conjunction with a "Plug" modification in a cartridge.

Happy vaping! :vapor:
